Cretaceous and earliest Tertiary shallow water marine deposits in the Mangyshlak Península, USSR suggest sudden and severe cooling possibly accompanied by increased salinities of the surface water al the Maastrichtian/Danian (M/D) boun dary, immediately followed by marked warming and decreased salinities. Geologic evidence indicates that the temperature decline was coeval with widespread and intense volcanic activity which reached a peak at the close of the Mesozoic Era. Volatile emissions led to acid rain which depressed the pH of surface water. lncreased acidity temporarily prohibited calcite nucleation of the surface dwelling warm-water plankton. Superimposed upon decreased alkalinity, severe and rapid climatic changes caused the extinction of calcareous phyto and zooplankton. Based on taxonomical range charts and time-specific diversities this fauna is studied in terms of mean species longevity, rate of species origin and rate of extinction. The brachiopod fauna initially appears to have colonized the chalk sea in mid-Coniacian times. From there on there is a slow build-up of species diversity retlecting a gradual niche diversification of the chalk. A clímax in adjustment and evolutionary stability is reached in Late Maastrichtian time. During the Coniacian-Maastrichtian interval mean rate of extinction is low (0.07 My- 1) and mean rate of origination equally low (0.10 My- 1). A sudden mass extinction at the Maastrichtian-Danian boundary, howe ver, eliminated more than 70 per cent of the species. The most specialized species, in particular the secondarily free-lying species, apparently became extinct at the boundary. Only six species are known to cross the Maastrichtian-Danian boundary. These are ali relatively featureless, non-specialized forms and gave, together with possible survivors in basin margin areas, rise to a rapidly formed highly diverse Early Danian fauna through adaptive radiation. The Early Danian fauna differs in taxonomic composition from the Maastrichtian fauna both on species as well as on higher levels. Paradójicamente, esta teoría elimina consideraciones sobre el papel del desarrollo que debería constituir un elemento fundamental en una teoría sintética, y predictiva, de la evolución morfológica. En este artículo se propone una visión del desarrollo como la función que transforma la información codificada en los genes a su expresión fenotípica. Esta función consiste en un sistema dinámico no lineal que contiene las propiedades de estabilidad, discontinuidad y transformación no aleatoria. Se tratan las implicaciones que estas propiedades tienen para la evolución morfológica y, en particular, se propone la existencia de un mecanismo de selección sobre las propiedades emergentes de los sistemas dinámicos de generación de forma. Tal concepto carece de contenido empírico hasta que se hace cóntrastable al particularizarlo dentro de las diferentes teorías componentes. La selección natural es un proceso que describe que, bajo determinadas características de los organismos en cuanto a su estructura o función, y aprovechando propiedades diferenciales entre ellos, así como la herencia de tales propiedades, se prevee el cambio de la estructura genética de la población. La selección natural es contrastable, al menos en la escala molecular. La teoría neutral de la evolución molecular preveé la evolución de las poblaciones moleculares en un contexto donde la selección no está presente como proceso determinante. Por lo tanto, es previsible predecir el cambio evolutivo a nivel molecular con hipótesis alternativas a la selección, como es el caso de la deriva genética. Al poner de manifiesto la importancia de la deriva en la evolución queda claro también que selección y evolución no son conceptos idénticos y que no hay relación biunívoca entre ellos. Dicho aumento, por ejemplo, podría ser causa indirecta de las modificaciones de tamaño y forma de los dientes observadas en el registro fósil. Se analizan los factores responsables de tales modificaciones desde la perspectiva de la biología del desarrollo (tasas de secreción y extensión de los tejidos dentarios, tiempo de formación de la corona y raíz).
