A mixed methods study was done using site survey, aerial photographs, historical research, interviews, and questionnaire responses. Inquiries regarding recognition, usage, and hopes for increase of 12 selected ETB plants were asked. Results showed the closest relationship of recognition and appreciation was due to gathering and usage. Usage of plants and remembering them also had a deep relationship with wanting to see an increase of them in the surroundings. Interest in commercially available plants and hopes for plants in the future in the surrounding neighborhood is associated with usage knowledge. Interviews confirmed that experiences with plants differ from childhood to adulthood. Children have direct and short experiences, such as picking and eating or playing immediately and observing adults’ usage, whereas adults collect and use plants procedurally. Plant experiences in childhood create deeper opportunities for PO in adulthood due to associated memories. Interviews showed these are often familial or personal experiences. Results also showed that medicinality of ETBs is not well-known, and is based on cultural input rather than association with the plant itself. It was concluded that PO, and consequently interest, come from memories associated with identification and usage knowledge. Further, from the results, it is concluded that ETBs must be readily identifiable in the landscape and that encouraging experiences through events aimed at families or personal experiences could foster the PO of ETBs.","PeriodicalId":378987,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Regional Planning Review","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115760787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proportions of covered trips within a specified deviation distance are derived for grid and random patterns of facilities. The analytical expressions for the proportions of covered trips demonstrate how the deviation distance, the number of facilities, and the pattern of facilities affect the level of coverage. The number of facilities required to achieve a certain level of coverage is then obtained. The coverage level is represented as the combination of the deviation distance and the proportion of covered trips. The coverage by the second nearest facility is also considered for the random pattern to deal with the case where facilities are subject to failures. The model incorporates any level of coverage and provides a versatile framework for determining the number of flow demand facilities.","PeriodicalId":378987,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Regional Planning Review","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123849423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Promotion of household disaster prevention is a serious problem. Disaster preparedness at home has not been implemented despite its importance. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of providing information to promote disaster prevention measures. Key research questions are; how promoting improvements contributes to household disaster prevention and how disaster prevention consciousness reflects behavior. The study consists of three experiments. In the first, we tried to verify the change in disaster prevention awareness of university students and the usefulness of the disaster prevention diagnostic test. In the second experiment, we tried to verify the influence on disaster prevention measures behavior using “the information provision strategy” and “the behavioral planning strategy.” In the third experiment, we tried to verify the influence of providing information according to TPB (Theory of planned behavior) explaining the disaster prevention behavior. Although the disaster prevention diagnostic test did not contribute to the disaster prevention behavior in the first experiment, it could be seen to act as a trigger to rethink the improvement in disaster awareness and disaster prevention measures. If people were in an environment with tools for disaster prevention, an awareness of disaster prevention, and a level of knowledge had an influence on disaster prevention behavior. In the second experiment, the information provision strategy and the behavioral planning strategy did not contribute to improvement in all aspects of disaster prevention awareness and disaster prevention behavior. However, we were able to promote “simple disaster prevention behaviors”, etc. related to the information provision. In the third experiment, the information provided in this survey did not contribute to the promotion of the “attitude toward the behavior”, “subjective norms”, and “perceived behavioral control”, which are the factors of TPB. Based on these results, we examined other factors contributing to disaster prevention behavioral intentions and found that “cost cognition”, etc. contribute to disaster prevention behavioral intentions. The significance of this research is that these surveys can clarify effective methods for promoting disaster prevention measures in each home, and can be used as a method improving disaster preparedness in the future.","PeriodicalId":378987,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Regional Planning Review","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128928393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of natural protected areas, it is said that considering various managerial dimensions and tourists’ experiential dimensions with resource dimensions to determine the extent of changes that are acceptable is more realistic, as ecosystem changes are dynamic and cannot be easily identified over short periods. This approach is known as the “Limits of Acceptable Change” (LAC)”, but the LAC approach and its methodologies are still evolving. This study therefore aimed to develop a framework for measuring the experiential dimension of the LAC approach, focusing on the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon (RISL) in Palau. We used six indicators defined through the preliminary research, and did experimental surveys with the structured questionnaire, the line census and the noise investigation for collecting both subjective and objective data. Results indicated that tourists’ experiential satisfaction was remarkably high which could outweigh concerns about congestion. On the other hand, the analysis of the relation among indicators illustrated a candidate threshold of the number of visitors at a time, although we cannot be decisive with only one-time research. From the perspective of the evaluation of the methods, we found that subjective data was not effective in some cases as they could be too affected by personal background to reproduce an actual condition at the site. Further research including surveys on the resource dimension are needed for obtaining more reliable results for developing the LAC approach.","PeriodicalId":378987,"journal":{"name":"Urban and Regional Planning Review","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131953686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
