Azizi","doi":"10.24105/2473-3350.22.468","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.24105/2473-3350.22.468","url":null,"abstract":"The heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, and Ni were analyzed in the soft tissue of mussels (Anodonta cygnea) as well as in sediments at five regions of Anzali Wetland, on the southern bank of the Caspian Sea during October and November 2016. The data were applied for assessing the pollution levels in emphasizing the mussel habitats by geochemical indices and furthermore answering the inquiry whether these indices can predict the contaminant level in the swan mussel soft tissue. The highest geochemical indices in the sediment: EF, Igeo, CF, and PLI revealed moderately to seriously contamination level of Cd and Pb in sampling sites. The sheijan and Bahambar also showed a higher contamination level of metals than in other regions. According to the ecological risk index (RI) Mahrouzeh, Hendekhaleh, Abkenar, and Bahambar areas were presented within the range of moderate risk level. Additionally, multivariate statistics showed that Ni is controlled by parent rocks and at the same time Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn originated from anthropogenic sources. The highest geochemical data for Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, and Ni recorded in Bahambar, Abkenar, Mahrouzeh, Sheijan, and Mahrouzeh respectively. But the highest accumulation of Pb, Cd, and Cu in mussel measured in Bahambar, Abkenar, and Mahrouzeh respectively, and also Zn and Ni in Hendekhaleh. The consequence was that these coasts have been threatened by natural and anthropogenic factors. Sea dykes were considered as an effective solution to protect muddy coasts and to adapt to climate change and sea level rise. Kien Giang mangrove dominated muddy coast was severely eroded and vulnerable to erosion. Sea dykes were constructed along the Kien Giang coast to as an effective strategy for protecting the Kien Giang coast. However, the Kien Giang coast was severely eroded, with aquaculture ponds eroded and mangroves uprooted. This study aims to critically review the effectiveness of the sea dykes in terms of coastal protection. The sea dyke system has been limited success, with the Kien Giang coastline made vulnerable to erosion and uprooting of Rhizophora species and aquaculture ponds vulnerable to erosion. The construction and upgrading of the sea dyke system significantly contribute to the vulnerability to erosion. The majority of the local farmers recognized the importance of mangrove protection and sea dykes in adaptation to climate change and sea level rise. However, there was still a small percentage of local community members who did not need sea dykes to protect their properties. Klumb-Oliveira, Rafael Alexandre França Lima","doi":"10.5894/RGCI-N146","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5894/RGCI-N146","url":null,"abstract":"The paper presents a historical assessment of the occurrence of marine storms and associated damages in the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro between 1979 and 2013. The wave characteristics associated to each event were analyzed to characterize the storm conditions that lead to damages on the beaches. Two case studies, one including the municipalities of Maricá and Saquarema, and the other at Macaé, were used to highlight the impacts of storms on urbanized beaches. Wave data between 1979 and 2013 for the coast of Rio de Janeiro were obtained through the wind reanalysis available from NOAA. The inventory record of damages associated with extreme sea conditions events on the coast of Rio de Janeiro was obtained from the database of the newspaper O Globo. The results showed 120 days between 1979 and 2013, with the occurrence of storm damages on beaches. The major number of storms occurred between May and September, when cold fronts are more frequent. Most data reported was associated to damage on streets, bars, boardwalks and houses built close to the coastline. Despite the more exposed coastal alignment to S wave energy, from Rio de Janeiro to Cabo Frio, the coastal sector located north of Cabo Frio is also associated to news of damage to structures on the coastal border. The analysis of wave height records relating to damage on the beaches showed an extensive range of heights, since less than 1 m to more than 4 m, from SE to SW directions. This result raises issues concerning the establishment of a wave height threshold “harm-inducing”.
