It has also been shown that the use of formal methods such as abstract state machines (ASMs) can contribute to high-quality designs, in particular, if standard refinements can be exploited. In this paper we continue a direction of research that exploits a typed version of ASMs for this purpose in order to be able to preserve the advantages that arise from using declarative languages. In order to support schema dominance we also employ a restricted notion of refinement, which we call strong data refinement. Our approach uses formal methods at different design stages to reduce the complexity of developing a self-adaptive embedded program. In our framework system requirement is rigidly encoded in temporal logics, and the original embedded system behavior is captured in a hybrid automaton-based model. We introduce the reconfiguration specification language REDL to specify reconfiguration requirements, and define a formal semantics of reconfiguration in context of hybrid automaton. Using formal methods also helps automate design and implementation: we use model-based runtime verification techniques introduced by Tan et al. (2001) to extend a system model to a self-monitoring model based on its temporal logic requirements; we then extend the self-monitoring model with a reconfiguration mechanism based on its REDL specification. This criterion is based on the analysis of the effects of inputs on predicates and outputs in a program. It requires that each such effect in a program is examined at least once during testing and thus provides a means of capturing the implemented functionality and checking the consistency of the program with respect to its functional requirements. Especially, they should be very careful when they use a system with components and/or services provided by third parties. However, there are few methods or tools to learn and confirm such issues. In this paper, we present a supporting tool called \"PORTAM\" for such users and providers to understand the threats and the requirements. Suppose some requirements cannot be satisfied when some threats are avoided, and vice versa. In such cases, they should decide whether the requirements should be satisfied or the threats should be avoided. The tool also helps them to decide such kinds of trade-offs. Current version of this tool handles Java mobile code applications, thus users of our tool can easily feel real threats. Although the current version deals only with Java components, the ideas behind the tool can be applied to software in general. We concern its quality from the point of view of practicality. This paper presents the key technologies during the reconstruction of the distributed transaction monitor OnceTX1.0 to OnceTX2.0, including scalable architecture, multi-phase concurrency control, dynamic configuration and access for system services, and optimization of message organization and processing. OnceTX2.0 is now applicable to not only small-scale and tight-coupling transaction applications, but also geographically dispersed applications with transaction demands. Its performance has also been enhanced, which is proved by the benchmark results.
