The molecular weight of lignophenol was controlled from ca.7400 to ca.520, using the intramolecular switching function under the alkaline condition. By the blending of the biopolyester [poly (3-hydroxybutyrate)] with butylhydroxyanisole (BHA), triacetin and lignophenol 2nd derivative, the elongation ratios of the resulting films became 5, 5 and 20 times higher, respectively, compared with the control film without additives. For the composite films with BHA and triacetin, the shrinkages and the weight losses were observed with increasing temperature, due to the evaporation of additives. On the other hand, for the composite film with lignophenol 2nd derivative, no shrinkage was observed, and the thermogravimetric profiles were almost compatible with that of the control film. The DSC analysis indicated that the crystallization enthalpies of biopolyester-lignophenols films decreased with increasing contents of lignophenols.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134030281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was shown that suitable loadings of nickel and calcium were both 8 wt% for char in terms of the formation of T-component and EMS capacity, and the Ca/Ni ratio of 1.0 was also optimal for other nickel loadings. A similar aspect was observed in the same carbonization of acid-demineralized alkali lignin (DAL) used for comparison. Both steady states and transient states after step increase of shear rate are examined. At steady states. it was confirmed that the domain size becomes smaller inversely proportional to the distance from the center (i.e., shear rate) along the radial direction of PP, consistent with the data in CP compared at the same shear rate. The related rheological data are also consistent. At transient states after the step increase of shear rate, there was no apparent long-range interference in the transient behaviors undergoing in different time scales at different positions along the radial direction of PP. The structure change and the related excess stresses of immiscible polymer blends with the nearly same viscosities under shear flow in PP are consistent with those in the CP geometry.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131485536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To simulate the defects, holes having 50, 200, 400, 760 and 1000μm diameters were introduced onto the surface of a series of specimens (Series A). Another series of specimens (Series B) were prepared to investigate the effect of a burr or a pre-crack which was introduced at the edge of the artificial hole. For Series A specimens, the fatigue limit was defined as the threshold for crack initiation from the edge of the hole. For Series B specimens, the fatigue limit was defined as the threshold for crack propagation from the burr or the tip of the pre-crack. The results of the fatigue tests for R=-1 indicated that the fatigue limits of Series B specimens were 20∼60MPa lower than those of Series A specimens. In contrast to steels, non-propagating cracks did not form at the holes, a fact associated with the relatively high stress level for crack initiation from hole in Ti-6Al-4V. It was also found that the area parameter model underestimated the fatigue limit of Series A specimens, but the model accurately predicted the fatigue limit defined by crack-growth threshold for Series B specimens. In addition it was noted that the presence of a burr resulted in a decrease in fatigue life, since the burr facilitated the crack initiation process.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116691207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many techniques have been used to produce calcium phosphate, especially hydroxyapatite (HAP) coatings on metallic substrates. In this paper, a simple wet-chemical method, chemical bath deposition is reported to prepare calcium hydroxyapatite coatings on a Ti plate at relatively low temperature (93°C). The method is based on chelating calcium ions with a complex reagent and then increasing the temperature to dissociate the calcium ions, which induces the precipitation of HAP. EDTA is chosen as the complexion agent. At 60-95°C the Ca(EDTA) 2- complex thermally dissociates and releases free calcium ions. Substrates used in this research are Ti plates with 0.2 mm in thickness. The substrates were gritted by metallographic Al 2 O 3 paper and then treated in a solution of 2mol/dm 3 KOH at 95°C for 1 hour. The HAP coatings were performed in a chemical bath that was heated from 60°C to 95°C, XRD data indicated that the coatings are highly crystalline. FTIR and EDX analyses revealed that the coatings consist of Ca-deficient apatite. SEM micrographs of the coatings show that the coating is composed of evenly small crystal grains. The surface was uniform without apparent pores or agglomerates.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124156315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Properties of saturated bentonite are characterized by hydrated clay minerals. For a diffusion problem in bentonite we developed a new multiscale homogenization analysis (HA) procedure which relates microscale characteristics with a macroscopic behavior. We discuss diffusion properties of tritium water (HTO) compared with experimental data. Microscopic properties of the montmorillonite hydrate such as diffusivity of chemical species which are used in HA are determined by a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. We show the calculated results are consistent with macroscale experimental data.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129287609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When postfinishing is performed after the Cr-plating process, cracks in the Cr layer are closed as a result of plastic flow on the topmost surface layer. When the residual stress in the Cr layer becomes compressive due to the postfinishing, the cracks are completely closed, resulting in a high corrosion resistance. The residual stress in the Cr layer changes from compressive to tensile following heat treatment. When the residual stress becomes tensile, the cracks in the Cr layer which were closed during postfinishing open once again, resulting in a decrease in the corrosion resistance. We speculated that the change of residual stress from compressive to tensile is caused by the shrinkage of the Cr layer due to heat treatment and the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the substrate (steel) and Cr layer, as well as the release of residual stress generated during processing. In order to prevent the decrease of corrosion resistance under heat treatment, it is effective to apply compressive stress which exceeds the level of change in residual stress due to heat treatment to the Cr layer during postfinishing, after the Cr plating process.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"51 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131433773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lignophenols have unique properties such as high phenolic activity and obvious phase transition. Furthermore, the functionality of lignophenols was able to be controlled using the intramolecular switching function: Under alkaline condition, C1-phenols in lignophenols nucleophilically attack adjacent C2 as switching devices, followed by the cleavage of aryl ether linkages. In ligno-p-cresol and ligno-2, 4-dimethylphenol with similar switching functionality and structural characteristics, ligno-p-cresol was highly hydroxymethylated (HM) on the cresolic nucleus to give network-living pre-polymer. On the other hand, ligno-2, 4-dimethylphenol having reactive sites mainly on the terminal unit gave linear-living pre-polymers. The structures of polymerized lignophenols were controlled by mixing ratio of HM-ligno-p-cresol and HM-ligno-2, 4-dimethylphenol or by the hybridization ratio of p-cresol and 2, 4-dimethylphenol in lignophenols followed by hydoxymethylation. The resulting polymer chains were cleaved at the switching points to give low molecular weight subunits by the switching function. Recyclable composites were prepared by the combination of cellulose and HM-lignophenol (the mixing ratio of HM-ligno-p-cresol to HM-ligno-2, 4-dimethylphenol was 1:0, 1:1, 0:1, respectively). The composites had glossy surfaces and looked like wood. The dimensional stability of composites was improved significantly with increasing mixing ratio of HM-ligno-p-cresol to HM-ligno-2, 4-dimethylphenol. Using the switching functionality of lignophenol, the composites were re-separated into lignophenols with low molecular weight and cellulose.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128265218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, creep-fatigue crack growth behavior under displacement-controlled conditions was examined using CT specimens on 2 1/4Cr-1Mo steel. The J-integral estimation method and the crack growth prediction method using the fully plastic solution were also examined. Creep-fatigue crack growth under displacement hold could be separated into fatigue crack growth in the cyclic portion and creep crack growth in the holding portion. These two mechanisms were competitive with each other, and crack growth behavior was determined by the dominant mechanism of fatigue and creep. The J-integral approach using the fully plastic solution was introduced for predicting low cycle fatigue crack growth and creep-fatigue crack growth with relaxation. The suitability of this solution was verified by comparing prediction with experimental data obtained via the slope-line-control method.","PeriodicalId":377759,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science Research International","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126338269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results were as follows: (1) When two metals of the same type were rubbed against each other, the passivation film was almost completely destroyed immediately after the onset of friction, even when a very low normal load was applied. (2) In the metal to UHMWPE friction test, the passivation film was severely damaged immediately after the onset of friction. However, the passivation film recovered until the polarization potential reached a certain level, which was specific to each metal. (3) The allowable load on the bearing head was calculated, assuming that the degree of damage to the passivation film was 20% or 40%. When a metal acetabulum socket was used, damage to the passivation film on the head was severe, regardless of the type of metal used for both the acetabulum socket and the head.
