The start point of this work is the inherent diversity of this labor system. It argues that the study of the urban mita is essential to understand the complexity of the mitayo experience, as well as that of coercive colonial labor in its broadest sense, even though mita was not considered unfree labor at the time. The development of the reflection proposes to look closely at three aspects. On the one hand, the effect of the scarce historiographic treatment that the subject has received until today and that prevents a full understanding of the labor system in question. On the other hand, the regulated specificities of the institution and its practical reality in the jurisdiction of La Plata, Charcas, linked to other contemporary labor systems such as slavery and yanaconazgo. The approach is an invitation to future comparative agendas. Finally, the verification of certain ambiguities and terminological lapses when referring to mita, and the relevance of dwelling on them, as well as expanding the horizon of analysis beyond the person of the adult male worker.","PeriodicalId":37764,"journal":{"name":"Dialogo Andino","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41458506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The essay addresses the study of the labor regime of the colonial mita in two different conditions in the 16 th and 17 th centuries. On the one hand, three different types of mita: cattle ranches, textile work and Huancavelica mine performed by tributary population of a high Andean plateau; on the other hand, the mita on coastal haciendas toward Lima City, performed by tributaries from different parts of the coast and the Lima highland. This counterpoint shows us both the common and the divergent fundamental aspects of a labor system that was central to the economic order of the colony but less known to be applied out of the mining colonial industry.","PeriodicalId":37764,"journal":{"name":"Dialogo Andino","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45099040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the Ministry of War and Navy ordered their militarization, the Franciscans, in agreement with the Ministry of Justice, Worship, and Public Instruction, tried to Christianize them. In this framework, the national government promised them the delivery of land, livestock, and farming tools. In our opinion, these offers were part of a strategy of the political-military power - which is articulated with the missionary project - tending to neutralize the indigenous people installed there at a time when the advance of the Southern Border to the Negro and Neuquén rivers was planned. The work reconstructs the unsuccessful efforts by Ranquel leaders - mediated by missionaries and soldiers - to access some plots in the current south of Puntano-Cordovan. It also considers the context of inter-jurisdictional disputes between the national government and the authorities of the provinces of Córdoba and San Luis for the usufruct of such lands.","PeriodicalId":37764,"journal":{"name":"Dialogo Andino","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48756380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Chilean case, important magazines belonging to this popular print contributed to the dissemination of a virtuous image of the modernization process among its reading public, preferably located in the main cities of the country. This article aims to account for this staging, specifically analyzing a series of graphic reports referring to the nitrate cycle during the first three decades of the 20th century, all of them appeared in the magazines Sucesos and Zig-Zag, pioneering publications of this genre In our country. In it, it is stated that through these representations, both magazines disseminated an aseptic image of the nitrate exploitation process, which placed its emphasis on making visible the industrializing feat in the desert, highlighting the technical advances and the productive capacity of nitrate offices and their workers, making invisible, on the other hand, the social problems generated by the development of this economic activity, as well as the wealth of forms of political sociability and daily life that emerged in the pampas.","PeriodicalId":37764,"journal":{"name":"Dialogo Andino","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47832015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
