The first test flights has been carried out, and imagery with a verified resolution of 2.0 by 2.1 m have been acquired from a flight altitude of 41,000 R. and a slant range of 25 km. The calibration and the stability of the radar have been of great concern during the design and development phase, and the present paper will highlight these aspects through a discussion of design considerations and stability measurements. Remote, laser-induced fluorescence spectra collected using a single excitation wavelength are useful for detection of broad categories of fluorescent substances in water, but may provide unreliable estimates of concentration and cannot be effectively used to discriminate among substances with similar fluorescence spectra. Detailed snow pit studies which included the determination of the amount of free water within the snow pack were correlated with the brightness temperatures from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager.
