To increase the attention and the number of applicants to be a neurosurgeon, quality enhancement of education is necessary. The professional element, such as lecturers and clinical instructors in medical school and their qualifications, play an essential role in leading the continuous development of neurosurgery in their countries. Basic neurosurgical knowledge is needed to strengthen the association and cooperation with related clinicians, institutions, and organizations, as these will have relevant inputs on capacity building. In addition, as a short-term plan, we encourage task sharing and task shifting, which includes training general surgeons to treat life-threatening neurotraumatic conditions, which has been shown to salvage trauma victims in some setups.

The GNC’s Global Action Plan is comprised of 5 objectives: 1) amplifying access to neurosurgical care, 2) aligning global neurosurgical activity, 3) advancing relevant research, especially from low-and-middle-income country (LMIC) authors, 4) assimilating neurosurgical capacity building into surgical systems planning and 5) advocating for (neuro)surgical care within universal health coverage. The goal to assimilate global neurosurgery (GNS) into surgical system planning is further divided into 2 specific goals for 2021: 1) Increasing participation of neurosurgeons in >50% of efforts to strengthen national surgical systems, and 2) increasing the rate of participation by neurosurgeons in major global surgery conferences by >20%. In this paper, the importance of the assimilate objectives will be reviewed, current progress towards the first Assimilate objective will be highlighted, and next steps will be discussed.

I have spoken to President Oyesiku and Kenon Arnautovic, the Chair of Chairs, suggesting that rather than having two parallel processes performing the same task, that we consolidate these committees and have the ISPN serve as the Pediatric Neurosurgery Education Committee for the WFNS hence forth. Typically, in the past, the Committee chairs have been ISPN members. Both Nelson and Kenon have voiced agreement to that arrangement. Since the ISPN is already an international society with 530 members from around the globe, this should be acceptable without the ISPN having to “join” the WFNS. The agreement was that if any course produced a financial profit, those monies would be divided equally between the WFNS and the ISPN. To date, the ISPN has underwritten the costs of plane tickets for the speakers at these meetings, although the courses have all been virtual since the COVID pandemic. The local hosts have covered the costs of hotel, meals, etc. once the speakers are on location. To date I am not aware of any of these courses that have generated a financial profit. Obviously, the marketing and presentations at these teaching courses would be co-branded. \u0000 \u0000

Virtual learning, both live and on-demand, has become an essential educational paradigm in global neurosurgery in response to the pandemic. We discuss the different virtual learning modalities that have been developed or grown within global neurosurgery due to the pandemic. \u0000Methods: A narrative and anecdotal review was conducted. \u0000Results: We discuss webinars, virtual interactive presence technologies, digital simulation, social media, and web-based connectors and their role in global neurosurgery. \u0000Conclusion: As a community of neurosurgeons and future neurosurgeons, if we are to meet the global growing demand for neurosurgical care, we must embrace virtual learning in surgical training. The irreplaceable role of hands-on demonstration and teaching in the operating theatre will always remain paramount. However, development and utilization of progressive connectivity technologies will bring us closer to an achievable and sustainable future for neurosurgical training worldwide.

The Global Action Plan contains five objectives: Amplify, Align, Advance, Assimilate and Advocate for neurosurgical care. In this paper, we present the goals and the work of the Advance team.
