A three-phase grid connected photovoltaic generation system for improving the power factor taking into account the influence of variable solar radiation is presented. Using the instantaneous power theory (p-q), a reduced inverter model and different control strategies are proposed and compared such as conventional PID controller, Fuzzy logic controller and hysteresis current controller. It is shown that with an extended P&O maximum power extraction algorithm, the hardware required to achieve performance improvement can be reduced to few components such as a single inverter and a boost converter. In this paper, the solution to improve the power quality, in particular the harmonic reduction through active power filters, passive power filters and hybrid power filters, is carefully studied and implemented in a fully scaled three-phase simulation environment. Extensive simulations show how the harmonics from a solar power generation system can be eliminated and how a stable steady state is rapidly achieved after an asymmetrical grid fault (opened phase fault in the point of common coupling) is occurred.","PeriodicalId":37583,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Energy Conversion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41923089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, energy production through renewable sources has acquired the maximum attention across the globe. Concurrently, the power crises have escalated especially in the developing countries like Pakistan. It was reported that 1/3rd of the population in the country is still not connected with the power grid. This is an alarming issue that requires the immediate attention for the socio-economic growth of the country. Therefore, the energy policy advisors in Pakistan must consider renewable energy (RE) as a prime source of electricity generation due to its adequate and continual availability. In this study, the authors focused on wind energy and they proposed the Umerkot site located in the Sindh province to evaluate the wind energy potential based on various Weibull distribution techniques such as Empirical, Graphical, Maximum likelihood estimation, Energy pattern factor and modified maximum likelihood estimation method. The performance is tested based on the three statistical methods, such as root mean squared error (RMSE), the coefficient of correlation (R) and coefficient of determination (R2). Moreover, the capacity factor (CF) and energy produced (EP) from different wind turbine (WT) models are also estimated. From the analysis, it is noticed that the proposed site has a huge potential of wind for power generation and it can be utilized for utility purpose. Furthermore, if exploited, it will help in reducing energy shortage in the countryside which badly affected the economic growth.","PeriodicalId":37583,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Energy Conversion","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41397017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key enabler of this approach is the construction of load injection to bus voltage (LIBV) matrix that is utilized to carry out the backward forward sweep of power flow calculation in a single step. The bus voltages may be determined from the load injection directly by incorporating the LIBV matrix which, in turn, decreases the execution time when compared to other LF techniques. Further, a novel and generalized algorithm is proposed to construct LIBV in a fast manner. In addition, the effect of annual load growth is examined in this work. The proposed technique is tested on three balanced benchmark RDSs, which are the 30-, 33- and 118-bus systems with different VDL models. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to the results of the other approaches in the literature. Also, it is revealed that the proposed algorithm is computationally faster and more robust than the conventional LF techniques that are used to analyze distribution system having VDLs.","PeriodicalId":37583,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Energy Conversion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43884509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MPC can give effective tracking and regulation with fast dynamic response and robustness. The technique is based on a simple model to select which optimal voltage vector has to be applied in the next time interval without the need for a modular. The main drawback is that the switching frequency is variable and depends on the inverter operational point in terms of active and reactive power which is a typical case in photovoltaic (PV) applications. High switching frequency increases active losses in the converter and may have the risk of exceeding the allowable threshold of semiconductors. However, the very low switching frequency can degrade the produced power quality. This work proposes an improved MPC algorithm by taking into consideration the switching frequency evolution. The proposed controller looks for a trade-off between power quality and switching frequency when performing control. The proposed technique is implemented in MATLAB/SimPowerSystems, the good scenario is achieved with THD of 3.75% with a maximum switching frequency of 1200 Hz optimizing almost 90% from the maximum switching frequency when using standard MPC.","PeriodicalId":37583,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Energy Conversion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47727763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
