This paper first presents a set of tag based applications to be accessed with a mobile phone with tag readers. Certain problems and conflicts are identified when putting these applications in the same phone. Based on properties and special requirements of the applications we derive requirements for a middleware component, which would make possible for various services to coexist in the same phone and use same tags in a personalized way by users. An outline of the middleware component, the Tag Manager, is presented.","PeriodicalId":375822,"journal":{"name":"ICPS '05. Proceedings. To achieve this, it places the point-of-care in the community and often at the patients' own home. In this paper we discuss the building blocks of pervasive self care, a ubiquitous computing service infrastructure that can play a critical role in supporting patients with long term conditions to manage their case. This service employs embedded networked computing elements in the home environment, on and in the body, and in medications and consumer electronics to provide context aware case management. The proposed architecture aims to introduce a generic reference model for the delivery of pervasive self care services that can help reduce the considerable amount of duplication in current work in this area.","PeriodicalId":375822,"journal":{"name":"ICPS '05. Notification systems play an important role in delivering up-to-date, important information via such devices. We have been developing a novel push-style notification system that delivers a succession of new messages onto the mobile terminal display in a well-timed manner. This system increases the probability of the user discovering interesting information from among a stream of items shown one after another, and accessing the network to get more details if desired. Needless to say, the appropriateness of the message to be notified is important to the user. To make a push-style notification system more useful and comfortable for users, however, it is also essential to deliver the information without interrupting the user's on-going task. Furthermore, some mechanism that can recover from the user's failure to notice a message is also needed. We fold all these abilities into the one term of \"message reachability\", and propose a comprehensive and flexible push-style notification system. One of its main features is a Bayesian \"notification user model\" which takes task state, user state and user characteristic into consideration. The other is an adaptive notification control mechanism based on the user model, and a compensation mechanism to handle messages that the user missed. This paper details the user model and message control mechanisms, and concludes by showing implementation details.","PeriodicalId":375822,"journal":{"name":"ICPS '05. Proceedings. Location services have been in use, and studied, for a long time in mobile networks. With the proliferation of wireless networking technologies, users are mostly interested in advanced services that render the surrounding environment (i.e., the building) highly intelligent and significantly facilitate user activities (pervasive computing paradigm). Our focus is on navigation, one of the most important location services. Existing approaches for indoor navigation are driven by geometric information and neglect important aspects like the semantics of points/areas and user preferences. The derived applications are not intelligent enough to catalytically contribute to the pervasive computing vision. In this paper, a novel navigation mechanism is introduced. Such navigation scheme is enriched with user profiles and the adoption of an ontological framework. These enhancements introduce a series of technical challenges that are extensively discussed throughout the paper.","PeriodicalId":375822,"journal":{"name":"ICPS '05. Proceedings. Sensor nodes must carry out a coordinated cooperative effort in order to transmit the required data. This paper introduces TCMote, a new coordination model to facilitate application development over ad hoc sensor networks. Our proposal is based on a (hierarchical) architecture of sensor regions and the use of tuple channels to model communication and synchronization among sensors. A tuple channel is a FIFO structure that allows data structures to be communicated both in an one-to-many and many-to-one way, facilitating the data-centric behavior of sensor queries. The characteristics of TCMote and the primitives that it offers for its integration into a computational host language are presented.","PeriodicalId":375822,"journal":{"name":"ICPS '05. Proceedings. It allows remotely connected users (e.g., system administrators) to modify the configuration of any service provided by a specific (application) server, like email-, news- or Web-servers. Novel to our approach is that the system can manage configuration processes on heterogeneous software- and hardware- platforms, which are performed from a variety of peripherals unmatched in today's practice. In this sense, we realize a sort of pervasive system management, where devices like mobile phones, faxes, PDAs are enabled to be used by system managers as remote system configuration and management tools.","PeriodicalId":375822,"journal":{"name":"ICPS '05. In spite of their evolution; they can't tolerate such requirements. Meanwhile optimistic methods that do not lock resources and allow disconnections seem to be the natural choice for mobile applications. In this paper, we introduce an efficient replication algorithm that we call ERDA, which is based on legacy mobile database replication architecture: MS RDA (remote data access). This paper presents a performance comparison of ERDA and the remote data access (RDA), ERDA make the most out of the MS .Net Compact Framework: a relatively new but very famous platform for the development of mobile devices. This paper analyzes synchronization architectures to provide the best (speed, network traffic and storage vs. robustness) scenario to synchronize data.","PeriodicalId":375822,"journal":{"name":"ICPS '05. In this paper, we study the performance benefits of mobile agents for coping with the technical challenges associated with the VHE. We investigate the performance of mobile agents in terms of response time for service provision in a 3G network against a conventional solution. We base our experiments in an integrated, open and extensible agent-based VHE architecture by taking into account a variety of service use scenarios.
