Grancrete is an environmentally friendly material that develops high early bond strength and possesses an excellent resistance to fire. The study includes an experimental program to evaluate the behavior of seventeen RC slabs strengthened by using different types of fibers. The load carrying capacity, ductility, and mode of failure of the strengthened specimens were evaluated and the results were compared to control specimens. The research focuses on the effectiveness of the confinement of the specified C-Grid on the concrete core of piles. The experimental program consists of a total of seven short piles including one without confinement, two with steel spiral and four with C-Grid. The parameters included in the study were the number of grid layers, the overlap length, and the spacing between the circumferential wires of C-Grid. All the specimens were subjected to concentric axial compression up to failure. Results indicate that the specified C-Grid can provide equivalent performance or more than typical spiral steel reinforcement for precast prestressed concrete piles. The paper also presents an analytical model to predict the performance of piles reinforced with C-Grid as spiral reinforcement. The parameters that have the greatest influence on the shear behavior of RC members strengthened with EB FRP and the role of these parameters in current design codes are reviewed. The effect of transverse steel on the shear contribution of FRP was found significant and yet is not captured by any existing codes or guidelines. Therefore, a new design method is proposed, which considers the effect of transverse steel as well as to other influencing factors on the shear contribution of FRP (Vfrp). Mohamed","doi":"10.14359/51682468","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/51682468","url":null,"abstract":"Synopsis: Concrete-filled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes (CFFTs) system is one of the most promising technique to protect the reinforced concrete structures from aggressive environmental conditions. Most of the experimental investigations which have been conducted on CFFT columns under compression load were on unreinforced and short concrete stubs. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the strength and behavior of thirteen RC and CFFT columns. The effect of two parameters and their interactions on the buckling behavior were investigated; namely, the type of internal reinforcement (steel or CFRP bars) and the slenderness ratio. The eleven CFFT columns of different slenderness ratio 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 were tested under pure compression load. Also, two spiral-steel reinforced concrete columns were introduced in the test matrix as control specimens. Filament-winded FRP tubes were used as a stay-inplace structural formwork for CFFT columns. The internal diameter and the thickness of the FRP tubes are 152 mm and 2.65 mm, respectively. Also, the fiber orientations are mainly in the hoop direction. The uniaxial compressive strength of steel and CFRPreinforced CFFT columns was reduced by 13% to 32% with increasing the slenderness ratio from 4 to 20. The CFRP bars can be used as a longitudinal reinforcement for CFFT columns, and their behavior as a compression reinforcement was generally similar to that reinforced with steel bars.
