The 1 kW class output as our present program goal will be achieved to improve the FEL lasing mode, optical out coupling method, electron gun, and electron beam optics in the JAERI FEL. As our next 5 year program goal is the 100 kW class FEL light and a few tens MW class electron beam output in average, quasi continuous wave operation of the light and electron beam will be planned in the JAERI superconducting rf linac based FEL facility. Conceptual and engineering design options needed for such a very high power operation and shorter wavelength light sources will be discussed to improve and to upgrade the existing facility.","PeriodicalId":375593,"journal":{"name":"Advanced High-Power Lasers and Applications","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126464933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using four kinds of LD bars mounted on the water-coolers, we measured output and aging characteristics. The internal loss estimated from the free carrier absorption has a close relationship with the degradation of the AlGaAs LD bars. On the other hand, in the region we examined, the conversion efficiency is not the dominant factor in determining the degradation. The free carrier absorption locally raises the lattice temperature and accelerates the propagation of defects in the lattice. On the other hand, the thermal power caused by the injection current uniformly raises the LD temperature and affects the local lattice in minimal manner. Therefore, the degradation dominantly depends on the internal loss.","PeriodicalId":375593,"journal":{"name":"Advanced High-Power Lasers and Applications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132457945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have developed small co-axial discharge tubes of the inner diameters of 3 mm to 9 mm, and the lengths of 6 to 15 cm. The laser tube was made by ceramic pipe with two metallic electrodes at both ends. The excitation discharge was activated by using conventional capacitor transfer circuit with a special pre-ionization discharge through the ceramic pipe. The output energy of nitrogen laser was more than 0.7 mJ with pure nitrogen gas, and was about 0.1 mJ for XeCl laser. The repetition rate was increased up to 100 Hz without the high speed gas flow. This repetition rate was limited by the power supply, and no fatal degradation was observed.","PeriodicalId":375593,"journal":{"name":"Advanced High-Power Lasers and Applications","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114122944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New data will be presented on the optical properties at 10.6 micrometer relevant to the use of CVD diamond as optical elements in high-power CO2, lasers. It will be shown that with the current form shape capability, it is possible to achieve sub- fringe flatness (at 633 nm wavelength) on components with diameter greater than 100 mm and that shallow lens with radii of curvature greater than 10 m can be routinely produced. New results will be presented on the influence of the polycrystalline structure on the absolute absorption coefficient at 10.6 micrometer and on the laser damage thresholds, showing that the power density required to cause continuous wave laser damage in CVD diamond of high quality can be higher than that of current optical materials. Theoretical modeling results will be presented on the use of CVD diamond for the heat management of laser diode arrays. Issues such as thermal-mismatch-induced stress and form shape requirements for uniform operation will be discussed.","PeriodicalId":375593,"journal":{"name":"Advanced High-Power Lasers and Applications","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117074978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nonuniformity of thickness distribution was under 1% over 240 mm in diameter. The structure of TiO2 film grown at 25 degrees Celsius was amorphous. The structure changed into polycrystalline with an increase of growth temperature up to 400 degrees Celsius. Secondary ion mass spectrometry showed that chloride residents presented in the films at every growth temperature. However, these chloride residents could be removed by thermal annealing at 400 degrees Celsius. The TiO2 film at the growth temperature of 25 degrees Celsius had a laser-induced damage threshold of 5 J/cm2 for 1-ns, 1064 nm laser pulse. The damage threshold of TiO2 films decreased at higher growth temperature.
