While there are several specific protocols currently being discussed to address the coordination of Web services-enabled business transactions, we consider the tentative hold protocol (THP) that allows the placement of tentative holds on business resources prior to actual transactions in order to provide increased flexibility in coordination. We present a framework for applying THP in conjunction with 2PC to the problem in which service providers independently manage resources and clients seek to acquire the resources from multiple providers as a single atomic transaction. The proposed framework also facilitates the performance optimization of THP through effective parameterization with the notion of overhold size and hold duration. Accordingly, a detailed analysis is carried out to obtain an efficient method that can optimize the performance by adaptively determining the hold duration. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive approach yields a significant improvement over other non-adaptive policies.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. We classify the payment methods according to several standards, analyze and point out the merits and drawbacks of each method. To enable future applications and technologies to handle mobile payment, we provide a general layered framework and a new process for mobile payment. The framework is composed of load-bearing layer, network interface and core application platform layer, business layer, and decision-making layer. And it can be extended and improved by the developers. Then a pre-pay and account-based payment process is described. Our method has the advantages of low cost and technical requirement, high scalability and security.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. We describe a model for constructing trading engines, which are capable of concurrently participating in multiple interrelated negotiations with heterogeneous protocols. These tree-structured engines are configured by means of a single generic synchronization construct, which enables the incremental composition of complex trading schemes, including a number of well-known strategies from the financial trading domain. The construct is augmented by a priority-based scheduling algorithm, which selects a set of nodes for negotiation based on their estimated profit, the time remaining and the desired degree of concurrency. The model also provides iterative negotiation, which is essential in any complex trading environment.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. A client can access these services using the Internet. Web services infrastructure includes some standards, such as simple object access protocol (SOAP), Web services description language (WSDL) and universal description, discovery and integration (UDDI). In this paper we represent distributed Web services by modeling the flow of messages and methods in a Web service transaction. Such a model assists the Web services designer to ensure the correctness of Web flows in terms of deadlock and correct termination of the Web services transaction. WSDL and methods are modeled using Petri Nets. A software tool is implemented for extracting the model from the WSDL description of the Web services flow.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. One way to minimize threats in such an open community is to use community-based reputations to help evaluating the trustworthiness and predicting the future behavior of peers. We present PeerTrust - a coherent adaptive trust model for quantifying and comparing the trustworthiness of peers based on a transaction-based feedback system. There are two main features of our model. First, we introduce three basic trust parameters in computing trustworthiness of peers. In addition to feedback a peer receives through its transactions with other peers, we incorporate the total number of transactions a peer performs, and the credibility of the feedback sources into the model for evaluating the trustworthiness of peers. We argue that the trust models based solely on feedback from other peers in the community are inaccurate and ineffective. Second, we introduce two adaptive trust factors, the transaction context factor and the community context factor, to allow the basic trust metric to incorporate different contexts (situations) and to address common problems encountered in a variety of online e-commerce communities. We present a concrete method to validate the proposed trust model and report the set of simulation-based experiments, showing the feasibility and benefit of the PeerTrust model.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. We argue that while existing integration strategies providing static connections between various heterogeneous catalogues over mediating ontologies, ontologies themselves exhibit heterogeneity and lack of evolvability. What's more, reclassifying terms to link public ontologies is very difficult to avoid inaccuracy problem that is critical to electronic commerce. This paper highlights the problems of flexibility, exactness and evolvability that have received little attention in the literature and provides an overview of the concept exchange approach to interoperability. It illustrates why this is able to better solve the identified problems, presents the different features compared with other approaches and suggests how the concept exchange framework is working.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. The object can be thought of as being software, because data is often protected by forcing access to it to take place through a particular authorized software (e.g., a \"reader\" for an encrypted media file, in which case a license to view the movie is, in some sense, a \"software license\"). One of the ways that were proposed for such policy enforcement is the use of smart cards. We describe an enhanced solution to software license management based on tamper-resistant smart cards. Our public-key protocols for binding software licenses to smart cards improve on previous schemes in that they support flexible and partial transfers of licenses between cards. The license is verified by checking the presence of the associated card. The user can therefore have several software licenses all of which are bound to one card, to avoid juggling several cards in and out of the card reader.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. Although much research focus has been placed on achieving the lowest possible cost for the goods/services purchased we concern ourselves here with the operational procurement costs of the organization. The AutONA (automated one-to-one negotiation agent) system was conceived as a means of reducing these operational procurement costs enabling procurement departments to automate as much price negotiation as possible thus creating the option of reducing direct costs and/or redeployment of operational effort into strategic procurement requiring high human involvement. The problem domain has been limited to the automation of multiple 1:1 negotiations over price for quantities of a substitutable good subject to the organizations procurement constraints of target quantity, price ceiling and deadline. We present the design of the core reasoning system and preliminary results obtained from a number of experiments conducted in HP's Experimental Economics Lab. Our main conclusion is that AutONA could reasonably be deployed for automated negotiation having shown no evidence for being identified as an automated system by suppliers.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003. Thus this paper simultaneously extends auction theory, and provides a systematic method for further such extensions.","PeriodicalId":375124,"journal":{"name":"EEE International Conference on E-Commerce, 2003.
