Olisa","doi":"10.22161/ijhaf.6.3.5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22161/ijhaf.6.3.5","url":null,"abstract":"In many parts of Nigeria, large areas of lands are dominated by tree crop vegetations for timber production and for fruits with land users not knowing the fertility status of soils in these vegetations. Continual evaluation of soil properties of these tree vegetations has become pertinent for agricultural sustainability. This study therefore was carried out to evaluate the fertility levels of soils under selected tree vegetations at National Horticultural Research Institute Okigwe, Imo State, Nigeria. Five tree vegetations that were over 20 years of establishment were selected namely: oil bean (Pentaclethra macrophylla Benth), African breadfruit (Treculia africana), mango (Mangnifera indica), Ogbonu (Irvingia gabonensis) and orange (citrus spp). In each of these tree vegetations, four soil samples were collected at uniform depths (0 – 20, 20 – 40 and 40 – 60 cm) at different locations using soil auger. The samples were analyzed using standard laboratory procedures. Data collected were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance. Results obtained showed that despite the ages of these vegetations, the soils were acidic, low in macronutrient and basic cation concentrations when compared to FAO standard. The highest exchangeable bases and organic matter (1.78%) was recorded on bread fruit vegetation. Therefore, there is need to increase the fertility status of these soils in these tree crop vegetations by adopting measures that will boost organic matter content of the soil irrespective of the duration of the vegetation and this will help in agro forestry and alley cropping.","PeriodicalId":375111,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Horticulture, Agriculture and Food science","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129202854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uses cross-section data from 62 farmers. Sampling was done by Simple Random Sampling. The approach taken to examine the response of production to inputs is made descriptively. The production and efficiency functions are estimated using the stochastic frontier production function and the dual cost function. The results showed that there was no optimal use of production inputs. The frontier production function was mainly determined by the input of seed production of SP-36 fertilizer, KCL fertilizer, and liquid insecticide. The determinants of optimal production are determined by the use of seeds, urea fertilizer, and the use of drugs. The optimal use of inputs can produce an optimal production of 21,768 kg, while the actual production is only 12,250 kg. The use of seeds, SP-36 fertilizer, organic fertilizers, liquid insecticides, and labor are risk-reducing productivity factors. The technical efficiency of potato farming is in the medium category (ET=0.6644). Sources of technical inefficiency mainly come from the land area, age, and distance of farming land. Meanwhile, income, farming experience education and the number of family members reduce the occurrence of technical inefficiency. Farmers' behavior in responding to productivity risks is the average risk taker.","PeriodicalId":375111,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Horticulture, Agriculture and Food science","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128893571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The number of farmer groups in Siborongborong District are 319 Farmer Groups. Based on the results of the research in Siborongborong, the following conclusions can be derived : Potential variables of land, harvest and post-harvest, overall marketing has a significant effect on the income of farmers, while planting and maintenance do not significantly affect the income of farmers in Siborongborong. Fat and protein were the major nutrients found in the seed, with values of 36.52% and 27.57% respectively. Fatty acid profile showed that monounsaturated oleic acid (58.54%) and saturated palmitic acid (34.24%) are the predominant fatty acids of the seed oil; while amino acid profile showed that thrionine (7.55%) and methionine (6.22%) constitute the major essential amino acids; and proline (8.64%) and glutamic acid (7.33%), the major non essential amino acids. Total essential amino acid content of 37.17% was recorded, indicating that the seed can be considered a good source of essential amino acids. Ash content was 5.18% and is an indication that the wild seed contains reasonable amounts of minerals. In terms of phytochemicals, appreciable amounts of alkaloids (11.40mg/100g) and flavonoids (3.75mg/100g) were recorded, in addition to high level of phenolic compounds (170mg/100g) which suggests that the seed could possess good antioxidant properties. The above findings are indications that great potential exists for wild black plum seed as good source of nutrients and phytochemicals.
