The lamp parameters measurement is improved by means of a circuit based on passive elements. This study describes the conditions that must fulfill the parameters extraction, as well as the additional information that provides the step response test. With this technique, the polar graphs of a 70 W metal halide lamp obtained with step response are compared with those obtained by means of a point to point disturbances injection method. Different tests based on step response have been employed to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the lamp. These tests consist on applying a current or voltage pulse in order to obtain the lamp time constant. Nevertheless, a study that determines if the lamp time constant is the same in both cases has not been developed yet. On the other hand, the lamp time constants only have been tested in a single operation point, ignoring the effect of the limiting impedance (ballast). This paper presents a study about the lamp time constants and the interaction between time constants and ballast. The proposed hierarchical control system consisted of lower level controllers for each generation and storage component designed using sliding mode control and a supervisory controller that had the objective of maximizing use of the renewable sources while minimizing connection to the grid. The supervisory controller changed sliding surfaces and set points according to the operation conditions and performed load shedding based on load priorities when available generation is insufficient. The functionality and performance of the system is studied by means of simulations. The paper will present HPS model development, hierarchical controller design, and simulation results under the different operating scenarios. Some of these rectifiers are also able to compensate voltage sags. Power losses studies have been developed for this kind of topologies; however, the behavior of these is not mentioned under voltage sags conditions. In this paper, a power losses analysis of semiconductor devices of a single-phase active multi-level rectifier is presented, which takes into account the behavior of its variables in function of AC voltage, considering voltage sags. In difference with the traditional series AICS, the proposed scheme connects the auxiliary output of the main converter in parallel of the rectified ac mains, and also the design is made to correct the power factor not only to fulfill the standard specifications. Handheld devices like Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs), cell phones, PDAs and mobile Internet devices (MIDs) are battery-dependant. In order to decrease the battery voltage level and supply components like the processor, synchronous buck converter (SBC) is extensively used as voltage regulator (VR) in mobile devices. Synchronous buck converter has good efficiency at medium or high load conditions, but at very light-load operation, the converter efficiency is severely reduced. That condition is normal in these converters, but in battery operated systems, it becomes critical. In this paper, some already known techniques to improve efficiency converter at light load operation are presented and discussed. Additionally, a multiphase synchronous buck converter with non-uniform current distribution between phases and load-dependant operation modes is proposed. The converter has the following characteristics: automatic transition between the main and the battery, no additional control to detect failure in main, single structure, galvanic isolation, multi output voltages capability and only one switch control for two operation modes: normal and back-up. As the generating capacity of power plants grew bigger, the opportunity of carrying additional energy to farther away centers was envisioned. And so, large transmission and sub-transmission networks were born. As the cost of the fossil fuel increases, problems related to transmission energy losses become important, and the urgent environmental problem caused mainly by the big generation plants that burn fossil fuel is recognized. Thus, the ldquobigger is betterrdquo paradigm begins to show its weakness. At the other end of the scale, alternatives for electricity generation appear in the horizon, where the tendency is towards small devices, capable of taking small electrical loads, whose economy resides in the processes for their massive production. Such devices are designed to produce electricity at the consumption point, by means of local sources of energy. Solar and wind energy, small waterfalls, water currents, different forms of biomass, as well as different forms of energy in the oceans, are making inroads into the electrical systems, both as autonomous installations in remote sites and as grid-connected facilities. New paradigms, such as sustainable development, energy security and environmental protection, are emerging and will strongly influence the nature and structure of the electric systems in the decades to come. Similarly, technological change, occurring both on the electricity supply and the demand sides, will establish proper conditions for the evolution towards new forms of the future electric business. The scientific and technical basis for the evolution of the electrical sector are found in the field of new materials, the availability of microprocessors, modern electronic and control devises, as well as powerful calculation tools for analysis, design and engineering, of the generation equipment and of the supply systems.
