Suppressing the development of pests needs various control methods, including biological control through the application of natural enemies. Therefore, this study was carried out to prepare the inventory and identified the natural enemies, especially parasitoids of S. frugiperda . This study was conducted on farmer's land in Purwobinangun Village, Sei Bingai Sub-District, Langkat District, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. It was performed using a survey method by taking samples of eggs and larvae of pests S. frugiperda on maize through a purposive sampling (intentional sampling) method. The sampling was carried out on intercropping and monoculture maize crops. The collected eggs and larvae of S. frugiperda were taken to the Agriculture Faculty, Universitas Sumatera Utara plant pest laboratory to be reared until the parasitoids emerged. The result showed that two species of parasitoids were obtained namely Telenomus sp. and Trichogramma sp., with a level of parasitization of egg reached 80% for intercropping and 62.67% for monoculture. The larval parasitoids were obtained from three subfamilies of parasitoids, namely Cheloninae, Microgastrinae, and Campopleginae, with a level of parasitization around 13.2% for monoculture and 9.2% for intercropping.","PeriodicalId":37480,"journal":{"name":"Serangga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139353043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the increasing development and urbanisation especially in mangrove areas, the current status of fireflies in Sarawak is not well documented. Hence, this study aims to provide an updated preliminary checklist focusing on the firefly species from Sarawak, Malaysia to contribute to the scientific knowledge of Lampyridae. Twenty localities in Sarawak were selected as the sampling sites based on firefly sightings. Field surveys were carried out from October 2022 to February 2023 with additional samples obtained from the UNIMAS Insect Reference Collection (UIRC). The present study recorded a total of 372 individuals of fireflies representing five genera, namely Pteroptyx (with five species and two morphospecies), Pyrocoelia (with one species and one morphospecies), Luciola (with two species), Colophotia (with one species) and Abscondita (with one species). The first record of two species Colophotia brevis (Luciolinae) and Pyrocoelia opaca (Lampyrinae) in Sarawak was documented in this study. Thus, it is suggested that a more comprehensive study, especially in the central region of Sarawak alongside its preferred host trees should be conducted. This information will provide a better understanding of firefly habitats in Sarawak and assist to identify areas with significant conservation value.","PeriodicalId":37480,"journal":{"name":"Serangga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sampling was conducted at four sampling stations of SLFR using a sweep net. Water sampling has also been conducted. The study was conducted in July, October, and December 2021. The SLFR is dominated by one mangrove species tree, Rhizophora apiculata . A total of 97 individual fireflies were collected, with Pteropytx bearni (67) being the most abundant firefly species compared to P. gelasina (30). The average water quality of the SLFR was found to be in an acceptable standard value as determined by the Interim National Water Quality Standard (INWQS) Malaysia. Apart from other abiotic influences, water temperature (WT) and wind speed (WS) were found to be significantly different between stations ( P <0.05) and months of sampling ( P <0.05) between stations. Pearson correlation and stepwise regression analysis showed that there was a positive correlation ( P <0.001) between relative humidity (RH) and the firefly population. Because of their sensitivity to the environment, fireflies are considered strong indicators of the health of ecosystems. An unfavourable atmosphere would eventually reduce the number of fireflies.","PeriodicalId":37480,"journal":{"name":"Serangga","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139352108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
