Geometric characteristics of pellets, such as length and diameter, are proprieties considered by the technical specification ISO 17225–2 for the definition of quality classes. Reason for this is that pellet length affects many aspects such as how the biofuel fills the available space in the brazier and therefore impacts on mass and energy density. Currently, the standard ISO 17829 describes the methodology for measuring pellet length using a precision caliper on a small pellet sample. This operation, even though performed on small sample quantities, is time-consuming. An alternative method for measuring the length of the pellets is proposed in this paper. Our results suggest that the benchtop prototypal IR instrument MetaLab allows assessing pellet length and diameter with high accuracy, which makes IR instrument MetaLab a reliable and quicker alternative to the measuring method defined by ISO 17829. Standardizing the measurement procedure with the instrument proposed in this paper might lead to the development of a new measurement standard. Furthermore, the development of a portable version of Meta Lab may allow business operators to apply this innovative measurement method along the supply chain, ensuring an easier quality control of the product.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115316353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many monitoring systems have been developed to measure this variable. Among those, there is the sap flux measurement. The Tree Talkers are devices that have been recently developed for eco-physiological and microenvironmental monitoring of forests, and they can produce a big amount of data with a good compromise between efforts and benefits. Those data must be properly handled. This contribution presents ttprocessing: an R package with Graphical User Interface for dealing with data produced by Tree Talkers, illustrating a case study of real application of this system and discussing the potentialities of those tools.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115165073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tool is based on the coupling of the ARMOSA model and the extended transfer function model (TFM-ext). The first is used to simulate the crop growth dynamics and the consequent nitrate leaching within the rooting depth of the soil. Then its outcomes feed the TFM-ext model to assess the transport of nitrate through the unsaturated zone till the groundwater table depth. Results of the tool are shown through the LandSupport GUI both as coloured maps, representing the number of years for the arrival of the 50% of root leachate, and as cumulative charts of the nitrate arrival at the depth of interest. This work presents the tool implementation within the S-DSS, its inputs and an example of application.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124583193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to (i) evaluate the responses of irrigated (C) and non-irrigated (DS) isohydric and anisohydric grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars in a hot environment, and, (ii) identify the relevant leaf reflectance spectral regions for early stress detection. We characterised the physiological and spectral responses of potted cv. Grenache and Shiraz (syn. Syrah) grapevines undergoing three or five days of drought stress (DS) in a controlled heated environment. Vine water status and leaf gas exchange were assessed before and after stress imposition. On the same dates, leaf spectral responses were assessed using a portable spectroradiometer. Our results indicated that Grenache maintained its physiological function under well-watered conditions despite decreased leaf stomatal conductance $(g_{mathrm{s}})$ after five days of high temperature. Under DS conditions, unlike Shiraz, Grenache was unable to recover to its original (pre-stress) levels of leaf net photosynthesis $(P_{n})$ and $g_{s}$ after five days of stress. The spectral signatures of the different treatments allowed us to identify wavelength regions that were more sensitive to individual and combined stresses: 650–700 nm, 1400–1500 nm and 1900–2000 nm. The findings of this study suggest that in hot environments, Grenache and Shiraz partially abandon their isohydric and anisohydric behaviours, respectively. Grenache appears more tolerant to high temperature when soil moisture is non-limiting, whereas Shiraz is more resilient to heat when soil moisture is limited. Identifying the leaf spectral regions that are sensitive to drought and heat stresses may allow for the implementation of new protocols and instruments for early stress detection.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125457699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Insurance schemes based on weather indexes provided by weather stations or satellite data may represent an innovative and suitable solution to cope with climate risks. However, their uptake remains low due to both high premiums that farmers are not willing to pay and basis risk issues. The literature is vast and growing, calling for a reflection on pros and cons of different indexes. The weather-index based schemes have been investigated more than the indemnity insurances, with prevalent emphasis on rainfall-based, temperature-based and vegetation indices. We review the literature on index-based insurance to animate the debate on the planning of risk management policies, with a focus on the Italian situation to discuss on current data availability and future needs. The challenge is to identify an effective weather index and calibrate the damage threshold depends on the availability of data and models, as well as on the (scarce) knowledge of the critical aspects driving the weather-yields relationships, a major driver of distrust in currently offered index-based insurance schemes. A large heterogeneity is observed on the methods dimension, the regressions and correlations methods are the most widely approaches to design weather insurances. Rainfall and temperature-based indices are the most widely used as they are arguably the most important factors that affect crop yields. The debate on the identification of the best climate econometrics models to assess variation in yields due to changes in weather conditions is still vivid. Clearly, the main limitation is the availability of highly disaggregated publicly data. The understanding of these dynamics allows to identify the best index and model that can explain the relationship between weather extremes and yield losses, i.e., the working principle of weather index-based insurances.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"12 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128840967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methane (CH4) emissions from enteric fermentation of cows is the main source of GHGs emissions from the livestock sector, contributing for the 44% of the total. Nowadays research is focusing on finding technical solutions to mitigate these emissions. One strategy is the addition of natural additives in the cows diet, especially since the use of antibiotics as feed additives was banned in EU. In vitro fermentation trials are a useful strategy to simulate a ruminal digestion process and to test the effect of several compounds in reducing enteric CH4 production. The aim of this study was to develop a method to assess an in vitro enteric fermentation process. An automatic system (Ankom RF Gas Production System) for gas production (GP) measurement was used. The set-up protocol was validated by investigating the effect of two feed additives on CH4 and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production. The developed procedure has shown to be appropriate to perform enteric fermentation trials. The additives did not show any significant (p>0.05) effect on the tested parameters. Keywords-ruminal fermentation, gas emissions, additives.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130576148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Italy the bioenergy sector represents an important contributor to the energy production from renewable resources with the promotion of low-carbon economy, so primary solid biofuels are considered the main competitor to the total share of electricity generation worldwide. Woodchip plays a fundamental role in the present political and economic background, considering as a good candidate for the transition from fossil to renewable fuels, because widely available and distributed as a natural resource. Woodchip presents a high inherent variability of properties, derived from different conditions and its variability influences its technical and energetic properties. For this reason, the requirement of quality characterization could be considered a necessary step to price setting and combustion management and efficiency. Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is considered a reliable alternative method compared to the standard laboratory analysis because provide real time results in a rapid and cost-effective approach. Coupled with chemometrics to extract useful information from spectral data, it allows the development of prediction and/or classification models. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the energy content (GCV) of industrial woodchip samples based on moisture content (MC) values predicted from PLS regression models implemented in a portable NIR spectrophotometer (MicroNIR, Viavi Solution). After the use of 800 woodchip samples as test set to assess prediction models performances, the best one, according to MC prediction, is used to GCV indirect estimation on 193 new woodchip samples. The results highlight the possibility to use NIR spectroscopy for assessing the indirect estimation of energy content of woodchip, turning out to be an advantage for sector operators, preventing time-consuming lab analysis. Furthermore, provides the possibility to be applied on-site and for real time quality control. Portable instruments could foster continuous control, becoming a monitoring tool along biomass conveyor points. In this way, significant advantages in terms of logistic optimization could be reached.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"425 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122800268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when multiple sensors are employed, all tracking the same scenario, the presence of correlation in the sensed metrics results in the collection of redundant data, which implies interesting quantitative trends. This paper leverages on analytical derivations of age of information for queueing systems, to investigate how this metric behaves in a system of correlated sources, in particular for what concerns the number of sources, their correlation, and their offered traffic. The quantitative results that we obtain can offer interesting insights for planning and managing large scale systems where information is expected to be correlated, such as sensor networks for smart industrial and agricultural applications.","PeriodicalId":374452,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry (MetroAgriFor)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126497814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
