Hydraulic analysis is implemented by combining the lateral discharge equation, the back step method, the forward step method, and the golden section search. When the required uniformity of water application, the required average emitter discharge, one parameter of the lateral length and diameter, one parameter of the submain length and diameter, and the field conditions are given, the unknown parameters of the lateral and submain, the best submain position (paired laterals), and the operating pressure head of a submain unit can be accurately designed using a personal computer. The calculations in design procedures are simple and fast. It was found that the lengths of a lateral and submain may have two or three solutions and the diameters may have two solutions for some values of a uniformity coefficient of water application in slope conditions.","PeriodicalId":373295,"journal":{"name":"Transactions of the Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124343862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Ks of surface 1 cm layer decreased 2 orders of magnitude during 118 day period of percolation of 50 ppm glucose solution. After the alternation of percolation to germicide (NaN3), Ks increased rapidly. Population of bacteria near the surface did not increase, but that of fungi near the surface increased hundred times. Therefore it was proved that the first cause of Ks reduction is clogging of soil pores by hyphae of fungi and microbial synthesized products. The second cause of Ks reduction is occlusion of pore space by gas produced by anaerobic bacteria. The redox potential of all depths was below-150 mV at 15 day, which was sufficiently met for the CH4 production. From calculation of production and resolving rate, it was explained that all CO2 resolved in percolation, and that CH4 did not resolve perfectly. It is estimated that 14% of gas filled pore was occluded by CH4 gas and the occlusion contributed to the Ks reduction.","PeriodicalId":373295,"journal":{"name":"Transactions of the Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121561921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results represent that even though unsaturated condition in compacted soils caused the seepage flow to be non-linear, Darcy's law could be applied approximately. Deviation from Darcy's law becomes enormous only if hydraulic gradient is less than 1. Ratio of horizontal discharge flux to vertical discharge flux is roughly constant when hydraulic gradient is greater than 1. The smaller the hydraulic gradient is, the more the ratio varies. Method of compaction hardly affected flow behavior in coarse sand. According to 2-directions test results, anisotropy affected the soils which is finer than coarse sand.","PeriodicalId":373295,"journal":{"name":"Transactions of the Japanese Society of Irrigation, Drainage and Reclamation Engineering","volume":"259 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115019500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
