This study aims to compare the efficacy of topical ozone and dexamethasone in management of post-operative sequelae after mandibular trans-alveolar molar extractions. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients requiring surgical removal of mandibular molars under local anesthesia were randomly allocated into two groups, each group consisting of 30 patients. Group 1 received Topical Ozonated Oil in the extraction socket post-operatively, while Group 2 was administered 8 mg dexamethasone injection post-operatively. The patients were checked for postoperative wound healing, pain and swelling on 1st, 3rd and 7th day. Results: The results showed comparatively similar results for the pain severity and swelling score at the 1st and 7th postoperative day in both the groups. A greater reduction of pain was noticed in Group 1 on 3rd postoperative day. Wound Healing was noted to be better in Group 1 at 3rd and 7th post-operative day. Conclusion: In conclusion, topical ozone therapy can be used as an effective alternative treatment modality, when compared to dexamethasone for better management of post-operative sequelae following mandibular trans-alveolar molar extractions.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57963611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and methods: History of acute PAs and ECAA diagnosis was retrieved by searching the appropriate query in the database. All cases were diagnosed for acute PAs by calibrated dentists for patients admitted to urgent care. The odds ratio (OR) for the prevalence of acute PAs and its association with history of ECAA were then calculated. Results: The prevalence of acute PAs in patients with a history ECAA was significantly higher as compared to the general hospital patient population (p < 0.0001). The OR was 5.5. Females were more affected than males by 1.7 folds (p < 0.001). Whites were more affected than African Americans by 1.6 folds (p < 0.00001). Conclusions: The high prevalence of acute PAs in patients with a history of ECAA may suggest an association between these two conditions warranting a thorough medical examination.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57962755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The anatomical relationship of the nerve to the medial side of the socket of the mandibular third molar must be known when performing the procedure. When a lesion occurs, the diagnosis may be delayed by the effect of anesthesia. In the case of a complete section, repair can be considered by direct suture of the nerve margins. It is recommended to perform this suture as soon as possible. In most cases, the lingual nerve suture is performed remotely and under general anesthesia. Observation: The case presented here describes the early repair of a lingual nerve transection after avulsion of a mandibular third molar. The procedure has been performed under local anesthesia one day after surgery and consisted of a direct suture using the previous surgical approach. Conclusion: This allows for a simplified treatment of this complication, thus shortening the management time.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57962766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the efficacy of biologics has been well established, they are associated with numerous adverse effects. Several professional bodies have published recommendations on perioperative management of these agents to reduce complications. Currently no specific dental or oral surgery guidance exists. The aim of this paper is to review the current literature and guidance regarding the use of biologics in the perioperative period.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57963373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aimed at evaluating and comparing the potential therapeutic outcomes of these 3 phytochemicals by analysis of peripheral white blood cells (WBCs) counts. Materials and Methods: NS whole oil, TQ and EGCG were administered before, with or after 7,12-dimethylbenza[a]anthracene (DMBA) painting the hamster left cheek pouch. Before sacrificing each animal, 2 ml of blood was withdrawn into a fine heparin-containing tube to estimate the total WBCs, lymphocytes, MID cells, and granulocytes counts by an automatic count system. All cheek pouches were surgically excised and examined with light microscope. Results: Severe epithelial dysplasia was evident after 6 weeks of DMBA administration, and when NS was given for 2 weeks followed by DMBA for 6 weeks. When NS or EGCG were given for 2 weeks then continued with DMBA for 6 weeks, mild dysplasia was seen. When DMBA was given for 6 weeks followed by NS or TQ for 6 weeks, mild dysplasia was noted. Administration of DMBA for 6 weeks resulted in significant reduction in total WBCs and lymphocytes counts compared to healthy controls. Administration of NS or TQ for 2 weeks resulted in significant elevation in lymphocytes count compared to healthy controls. Significant elevation in total WBCS and lymphocytes counts was noted when EGCG was given for 2 weeks and continued with DMBA for other 6 weeks. Similar results were noted when DMBA was given for 6 weeks followed by TQ for 6 weeks when compared to NS, DMBA or healthy controls. Discussion: The three phytochemicals showed different levels of protection against DMBA carcinogenic activity, more specifically, TQ and NS had higher therapeutic potential and might be used for treatment and/or preventive management of oral cancer in the future. Conclusion: However, further investigations are required to address the mechanism of action and feasibility of clinical application of each phytochemical.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57963437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: Assess the anti-inflammatory effect of lidocaine following surgical induction wound in the oral mucosa as assessed by tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 32 albino rabbits that were categorized into 2 equal groups of 16 rabbits: In the control group an oral wound was surgically induced and left without treatment and in the treatment group an oral wound was surgically induced and received topical Lidocaine gel. Euthanasia of animals was carried out on days 1, 3, 7, and 10, and sample sites were processed for histopathological and immunohistochemical staining for TNF-α. Results: In the histological observations, it was noticed that the healing process was more rapid and convenient in the test group compared to the control group. For Immunohistochemical assessment, the TNF-α started to express clearly at 1 day and gradually decreased and disappeared at 10 days with a superior effect of the lidocaine group over the control group. Conclusion: Lidocaine seems to have anti-inflammatory reactions by lowering TNF-α levels and preventing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57962826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study compared salivary cortisol, depression and anxiety levels of patients with erosive and reticular OLP and healthy controls. In this case-control trial, 69 individuals (23 healthy, 23 erosive OLP and 23 reticular OLP patients) were selected. The participants completed the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) and 5 mL of their unstimulated saliva were collected. Salivary cortisol levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). The comparison of anxiety and depression scores as well as salivary cortisol levels was done one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test while the paired comparisons were done by Turkey post hoc test. The mean anxiety score in erosive OLP patients was significantly higher than that in the control and reticular OLP groups. The reticular OLP and control groups had no significant difference in this respect. The three groups were not significantly different regarding the depression score or salivary level of cortisol. The correlation between depression and anxiety was significant but salivary level of cortisol had no correlation with anxiety or depression. This study showed that anxiety control may aid in control of erosive OLP, although further investigations are required.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57963555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary objective of this study was to examine the association between pharyngeal packing, throat pain, and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in head and neck surgery. Material and methods: A systematic review of clinical studies published from January 2000 to August 2020 concerning the use of pharyngeal packing in head and neck surgery was conducted in the Medline, ScienceDirect and Cochrane Library databases. Throat pain and PONV were collected in each article, and a meta-analysis was performed. Results: A total of 10 clinical trials involving 877 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Pharyngeal packing did not significantly decrease PONV score either during the immediate (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.59 to 1.38, p = 0.52, I2 = 0%) or the delayed postoperative period (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.54 to 1.43, p = 0.28, I2 = 21%), but significantly increased the immediate postoperative throat pain score (MD = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.21 to 1.16, p = 0.19, I2 = 35%). Conclusion: This study suggests that the use of a pharyngeal packing to improve the preoperative aftermath in head and neck surgery should not be recommended.","PeriodicalId":37322,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery","volume":"43 5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"57963618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
