The paper presents a case study of formed LDGD e the origin, and possible methods to assess its occurrence on the basis of the research carried out in the Central Mining Institute (Poland). The authors showed that the presence of LDGD leads not only to the horizontal strain but also contributes to the formation of vertical curvatures of terrain that cause fissures in the near-surface layer of the rock mass in the areas with a thick layer of tertiary claystones and a thin layer of Quaternary strata. The accumulated experience also indicates that there is an influence of other mining factors, such as the interval between operations, face advance, and direction of operation, which may contribute to the occurrence of LDGD. Moreover, the authors pointed to the fact that predicting of LDGD is problematic and complex and is subject to uncertainty. Proper machine selection allows aggregates with appropriate technical parameters to be obtained and increases the output of the required fractions with a given unit cost. The usage of rock raw materials for the production of railway ballasts used in a railway track superstructure is connected with the necessity of meeting strictly defined quality requirements. This paper presents an example of the use of an impact crusher in a selected quarry for the purpose of obtaining the correct parameters of railway ballast and a suitable grain curve. A comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) was used as a novel approach to determine the beneficial impacts automation can also have on environmental performance, using data collected on mine site productivity and energy consumption. The LCA looked at four impact categories: global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, and human toxicity. When comparing automated equipment to their traditional manual counterpart, all four impact categories experienced a reduction with automation and a subsequent improvement in sustainability performance. Global warming potential, for example, decreased by 18.3% over the mine life period, or 3.7 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq.) per tonne of ore extracted. In this research, exergy analysis will be approached as an extension of LCA to ExLCA (Exergy Life Cycle Assessment), as complementary tools, for sustainability assessment of two gold mining systems in Colombia: open-pit and alluvial mining. It is quantified exergy life cycle efficiencies; Cumulative Energy/ Exergy Demand, by distinguishing between renewable and non-renewable resources used in the process. The energy contained in renewable and non-renewable resources, interpreted as a measure of its utility potential, and which inefficient use generates waste streams with an exergy content that may be a measure of its potential to cause environmental damage. For open-pit mining 53% of exergy consumed comes from fossil energy, and 26% of energetic use of water, while in alluvial mining, 94% of exergy flow comes from water as a resource used within process activities. However, traditional and conventional coal fuel extraction can threaten human health bycontaminating air and water, harming land, and contributing to global warming. The environmental impacts associated with conventional methods of coal mining and consumption can affect all components of the environment, and these impacts may be beneficial or harmful, permanent or temporary, repairable or irreparable, and reversible or irreversible in nature. These effects require considering of changing the production and consumption of coalwithin a technological framework. Coal mining operationscan cause both quantitative and qualitative impacts on water systems in and around mining areas. This paper reviews the impacts of coal mining on water resource development. It is considered by the National Development Plan of Colombia 2018e2022 as an economic agent that boosts development in the region and one that requires the strengthening of its policies and environmental liability. Therefore, this paper aims to show the importance of implementing methodologies based on the logic of nature (exergy) that objectively indicate the environmental impact of an extractive gold activity, such as open-pit gold mining. The extractive activity or process to be studied consists of the following stages: topsoil removal by using machinery and explosives to create craters and to access the mineral present in the subsoil; the physical transformation of the extracted material through crushing, grinding, gravimetric separation, flotation, leaching, adsorption, elution, and electrodeposition, along with smelting and casting to obtain gold and silver ingots. Thus, this paper analyzes the exergy performance of each unit process of the open-pit extractive process. The obtained results are used in a sensitivity analysis, which determines the system efficiency, by assuming the increase of gold in the extracted material in the exploitation stage, by using the same supplies and input of the current process. In other cases, the open-pit mining process is analyzed by changing its technologies in the mining process and assuming that this change reduces the inlet ore to 60%, by discarding 40% of material without gold and by reducing supply consumption by 25%. By improving the system efficiency, the exergy destroyed is reduced and the emissions to the environment diminish. The research was conducted based on the recorded courses of methane sorption kinetics in coal samples obtained in laboratory conditions with the precise gravimetric sorption system IGA-001. The value of the coefficient was treated as an element tuning the model in such a way that the average relative error of the ex post was as small as possible. Model verification indicated the correctness of its assumptions. The development of a more accurate methodology to determine the effective coefficient of methane diffusion in coal will enable the verification of the models applied in order to describe the physical and chemical mechanisms of the methane desorption natural phenomenon. The article describes the participatory process used for involving the stakeholders, including the workshops and the mapping technique that was used. Nyembo","doi":"10.46873/2300-3960.1009","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46873/2300-3960.1009","url":null,"abstract":"For a long time in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the mining of ores for the production of copper cathodes and salts of cobalt was mostly conducted in the near-surface oxidized mineralization of the Congo Copperbelt. An important part of this mineralization is found in geological settings where copper and cobalt mainly exist as mixtures of oxides and sulfides. With the depletion of surface-rich minerals, mining is taking place at depths where sulfide minerals are prevalent. Using current technologies, the hydrometallurgical processing of ores with high levels of sulfide minerals results in poor metal recovery due to their retention in process wastes. These mineral wastes have the propensity to lead to Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) when exposed to rainfall and atmospheric air. Therefore, major changes in the technologies implemented will be needed in order to guarantee higher process efficiencies while endeavoring to uphold environment safeguarding reinforcement. This work aimed to demonstrate the urgency of updating the hydrometallurgical technologies implemented for the processing of coppercobalt ores with an emphasis put on minimizing the environmental footprint of process wastes. There is also a lot of stored heat in mine water which can be tapped into long after a mine has closed.
