As premodern way-finding mechanisms are essentially unmapped, the importance of language and narrative becomes fundamental to spatial understanding: the first part of this paper proposes a discussion on the linguistic-expressive patterns that provide the foundation to spatial narratives. These include, at the most basic level, expressions of distance, orientation, and semantic/conceptual classifications. The second part of the paper addresses the problem of classifying regular expressive patterns through modeling: modeling is used as a strategy to better understand such linguistic-expressive phenomena, and as a hermeneutic exercise of application of computational methods to humanities data. The conclusion touches upon the idea of visual representations of premodern spatial narratives and discusses its challenges and advantages.","PeriodicalId":37263,"journal":{"name":"Berichte. These questions hold the strongest importance for geosophy. This paper argues that spatial knowledge - namely knowledge represented in spatial structures - is a manifestation of social knowledge up to a certain level, and material remains enable discovering spatial structures. We can reveal and model spatial knowledge of the past using landscape archaeological methods, although there are certain limitations. Spatial knowledge is reflected by material remains but the material remains may be under-determined or biased. This paper discusses the meaning of space, the different kinds of space, and spatial knowledge, turns to modelling as an important research tool and presents different kinds of spatial knowledge, namely topological, metrical, and structural knowledge.","PeriodicalId":37263,"journal":{"name":"Berichte. This claim is discussed in light of landscape aspects in prehistoric research. Starting from the premise that geographical knowledge is always linked to human perception, it is shown that, particularly through the unreflective inclusion of subjective experience in scientific reports, contemporary interpretations of historical sites are strongly influenced by the scientist’s own Western ontology. Using Gobekli Tepe as an example, the necessity of creating awareness for certain concepts within landscape archaeological research is demonstrated. Certain aspects of aestheticization, romanticizing and modern thinking, which formed particularly since the Renaissance, are reflected upon to avoid an application of contemporary ontologies to past societies.","PeriodicalId":37263,"journal":{"name":"Berichte.
