This is attributed to the fact that they are environmentally friendly and sustainable sources of energy, unlike the limited supply of fossil fuels. Among the various forms of solar energy, photovoltaic (PV) cells are a significant means of generating electricity directly from the sun. However, since PV arrays are typically installed in outdoor areas, they are vulnerable to lightning strikes resulting in transient overvoltage, which can lead to equipment failure and potential safety hazards. Therefore, it is crucial to implement an efficient protection system to prevent lightning strikes and assess the transient performance of PV systems during such occurrences. This paper presents experimental observations and analysis of the transient overvoltage response of PV panels under lightning impulse conditions. The experiments are conducted using an impulse generator that allowed for the controlled application of lightning impulse to a small-scale PV panel. The transient overvoltage response is recorded using high-speed data acquisition systems. The experimental results showed that the transient overvoltage response of the PV panels was affected by several factors, including changing the measuring point location, the impulse voltage value, the earthing resistance value, and the earthed leg. Furthermore, an analysis of the experimental data was conducted to identify the underlying mechanisms responsible for the observed transient overvoltage behavior. The experimental observations and analysis presented in this paper provide valuable insights into the transient overvoltage response of PV panels under lightning impulse conditions. The results can be used to develop appropriate protective measures to minimize the risk of equipment failure and ensure the safe and reliable operation of PV systems.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123360231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study includes various soil parameters and considers different distances between objects and striking points. To simulate these conditions, a designed model was used in conjunction with finite element software (ANSYS). The simulation results show that lightning striking the soil can significantly increase the current potential around the attachment point, extending to distant parts of the earth due to soil conductivity. To evaluate the potential impact on the human body, the study analyzed the values of the Electromagnetic Field (EMF) and EPR distributions, which can cause injuries or fatalities. Understanding these effects is crucial for developing effective grounding and lightning protection systems. Public safety measures should also be disseminated to reduce the risks posed to humanity. The results of the analysis demonstrate that different soil factors influence the human body in distinct ways. This information can be used to develop more effective safety measures and improve the protection of human life from lightning strikes.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128587999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solar PV generates electricity by converting solar energy and providing it to the user. In addition, battery energy storage is also utilised to supply consistency and satisfy the need for energy. However, because the system is installed in open spaces, lightning has always been a huge difficulty for it to work at optimal efficiency. In this paper, the single SPD Class I was installed near the inverter on the DC side. The study on cable length with various lightning current amplitude and lightning strike distance is conducted. The simulation findings found that the inverter is well protected by the SPD whereby the impulse withstand voltage is 6 kV, however, the solar PV-BESS is affected by the lightning-induced voltage regardless of any cable length. In this way, providing the requirement for an adequate SPD installation will ensure improved maintenance and extend the equipment’s lifespan.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133157352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relative motion between the wind turbine’s blade and surrounding air when the wind turbine rotates is equivalent to the high-speed airflow through the blade tip. A two-dimensional positive space charge distribution model of corona discharge was established considering the attachment and collision between positive ions and other ions. Based on the above model, the blade tip corona discharge was simulated, and the distribution and migration characteristics of positive space charge were obtained when the blades were at different angles. It is found that, under the lightning electric field and high-speed airflow, the transfer velocity of space charge provided by the high-speed airflow flowing through the blade tip is much higher than that provided by electric field traction. Therefore, the transfer and diffusion direction of space charge in the blade tip is mainly determined by the direction of the high-speed airflow at the blade tip. At the same time, the space charge no longer symmetrically distributed in space causes space potential distortion, the potential on the left side (windward side) of the blade tip air-termination is higher than that on the right side at the same height, and the direction of the maximum electric field near the blade tip air-termination shifts to the left, and the electric field amplitude also increases compared with that in the static condition. The work in this paper can provide a basis for the initiation and development calculation of upstream pilot wind turbine blades.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127735319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The AT was designed as part of compliance to company’s standardized technical practice on LPS, which is intended to prevent any accidental ignition at the vent tip area that may result in flame getting propagated into the vent system. Calculated hazardous zone radius of 7.01 meters, requires the AT designed height to be approximately 8 meters to ensure it is outside of the hazardous area cloud. This height is deemed impractical. Dimension of the AT contributes to major impact on the vent stack structural design as it leads to additional construction material which results to increase in platform weight. From project execution perspective, this will increase overall cost and lengthen the project execution schedule. Risk assessment was done on not having to install the AT on vent stack and several means are identified to manage the risk through appropriate mitigation plans. These mitigation plans support project management team decision to deviate from company’s standardized technical practice on LPS.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"1 15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127979325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To examine the characteristics of BFB lightning flashes caused by this thunderstorm, occurrence frequency, horizontal discharge distance, and direction of discharge progress, quantitative analysis was conducted using lightning mapping array data and extended radar information network (XRAIN) precipitation data for the first time in Japan. This thunderstorm produced 18 BFB flashes. The maximum and average horizontal discharge distance from the edge of the precipitation area were 3,652 m and 1,431 m, respectively. The distance from the edge of the precipitation area and the discharge inception altitude of the BFB flashes seemed to be longer and higher than normal cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes. In particular, the direction of the BFB discharge progress showed a characteristic distribution concentrated on the south side of the thunderstorm and right side of its movement direction. The surface wind around this area flowed from the south side into the thunderstorm. According to XRAIN precipitation data, BFB flashes occur around heavy rain regions (convective region) inside the thunderstorm. The BFB-producing thunderstorm in this study was extremely dangerous because BFB flashes occurred in the opposite direction of the thunderstorm’s movement direction.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115885785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And thus, many studies of indirect and direct lightning performance have been carried out. In many studies, the reduction of the flashover voltage due to salt pollution of distribution insulators has not been considered. When the insulator is polluted by salt, flashover voltage of the insulators decreases, and it may cause the increase of the flashover rate due to lightning. In this paper, at first, we show the flashover characteristics of insulators considering the salt pollution. Next, we estimate the direct lightning flashover rate under salt pollution condition by Monte Carlo procedure. The calculation results show that the influence of salt pollution on the flashover rate may be relatively greater in the well-protected distribution lines.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"215 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116827083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main contribution of this work is to investigate the behavior of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning in Beaufort by retrieving data from Lightning Detection System (LDS). This is achieved by analyzing data from LDS for three years from year 2020 to 2022 and tabulate them into visual aids. To validate the data, a lightning detection system (LDS) which owned by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) which consisting of 6 sensors in Sabah state is used to retrieve data for lightning activities in Sabah. From the analysis, it found a total number of 117,113 cloud-to-ground (CG) events in radius of 10km from Beaufort district and the pattern shows the distribution of lightning discharges (CG) for three years are increased from year 2020 to 2022. All these data are important for the purpose of lightning protection for transmission lines tower and line lightning performance in Beaufort area.","PeriodicalId":371726,"journal":{"name":"2023 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124204022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
