Longmire, T. Kolbe, J. Carney, P. Watt
The Pajarito Plateau of northern New Mexico contains a rich and diverse record of late Quaternary landscape changes in a variety of geomorphic settings that include gently-sloping mesa tops, steep canyon walls, and canyon bottoms. A broad range of investigations during the past decade, motivated by environmental and seismic hazard concerns, have resulted in examination of the characteristics, stratigraphy, and age of sediments and soils at numerous locations throughout the Plateau. Geochronologic control is provided by >140 radiocarbon dates supplemented by soil characterization and tephrochronology. In this paper we first summarize some of the results of recent and ongoing work on late Quaternary deposits on the Pajarito Plateau, illustrating both the complexity of the geomorphic record and some common elements that have been observed in multiple locations. We then use these observations, in combination with other work in the Southwest, to make some inferences about the local geomorphic response to regional climatic changes. Because the geomorphic and paleoclimatic records are fragmentary, and because the relations between large scale climate changes and local variations in precipitation, vegetation, and geomorphic processes are not fully understood, many uncertainties exist concerning the response of the local landscape to past climatic fluctuations. In addition, variations in local landscape sensitivity related to prior erosional history and spatial variations in vegetation, and the localized nature of many storms, probably contribute to the complexity of the geomorphic record. Nevertheless, the work discussed in this paper suggests a strong relation between regional climatic changes and local geomorphic history, and provides a framework for considering relations between modem processes, the record of past landscape changes, and future erosion and deposition on the Plateau and in surrounding areas.
Stratigraphy and correlation of Triassic strata around the Nacimiento and Jemez uplifts, northern New Mexico
Triassic strata exposed along the flanks of the Nacimiento and Jemez uplifts (Sandoval County, northern \u0000New Mexico) belong to the Middle Triassic Moenkopi Formation (Anton Chico Member) and the Upper \u0000Triassic Chinle Group (Agua Zarca, Salitral, Poleo, and Petrified Forest Formations). The Moenkopi Formation \u0000(strata previously assigned by most workers to the Permian Bernal Formation) is as much as 39 m thick and mostly \u0000grayish red sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, and intraformational conglomerate. It disconformably overlies the \u0000Permian Glorieta Sandstone and is disconformably overlain by the Agua Zarca Formation. The Agua Zarca is as \u0000much as 61 m thick and mostly white to brown, trough-crossbedded, quartzose sandstone and siliceous conglomerate. \u0000The overlying Salitral Formation is as much as 102 m thick and mostly purplish, smectitic mudstone. The \u0000Poleo Formation disconformably overlies the Salitral and is as much as 41 m thick and mostly grayish yellow, \u0000trough-crossbedded litharenite, subarkose and intrabasinal and siliceous conglomerate. Above the Poleo, the Petrified \u0000Forest Formation is as much as 340 m thick and dominated by reddish brown, smectitic mudstone. South of \u0000San Miguel Canyon (T19, R1W), the Poleo Formation essentially pinches out, though thin (<20m), lenticular \u0000equivalents of the Poleo are locally present as far southeast as Vallecito Creek (T16N, R2E). Furthermore, throughout \u0000Sandoval County, the lower portion of the mudstone-dominated interval above theAgua Zarca Formation, even \u0000where the Poleo Formation is absent, is dominated by purplish mudstone characteristic of the Salitral Formation. \u0000Therefore, to the south of San Miguel Canyon the Salitral and Poleo Formations can be recognized locally, but the \u0000thick, mudstone-dominated section above the Agua Zarca is assigned to the Petrified Forest Formation. The Correo \u0000Sandstone Bed crops out as a bench-forming sandstone up to 15 m thick at the top of the Petrified Forest Formation \u0000along the southern flank of the Nacimiento uplift. Fossil vertebrates indicate the Petrified Forest Formation ranges \u0000in age from Adamanian to Revueltian (latest Carnian-Norian) and support lithostratigraphic correlation of the \u0000Triassic strata exposed in Sandoval County to nearby Triassic outcrops in the Chama basin, Lucero uplift, and \u0000Hagan basin.
