One key challenge is to deliver services taking into account the stringent requirements of mobile video streaming, e.g., the users' expected Quality-of-Service. Admission control and resource allocation can strongly benefit from the use of anticipatory information such as the prediction of future user's demand and expected channel gain. In this paper, we use this information to formulate an optimal admission control scheme that maximizes the number of accepted users into the system with the constraint that not only the current but also the expected demand of all users must be satisfied. Together with the optimal set of accepted users, the optimal resource scheduling is derived. In order to have a solution that can be computed in a reasonable time, we propose a low complexity heuristic. Numerical results show the performance of the proposed scheme with respect to the state of the art.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124156447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All these could lead to inefficient forwarding, low delivery, long latency and limited transmission capacity in performance. In this paper, efficient encoding and decision methods are presented and integrated into the DTN routing strategy. The custody-encoding-forwarding mode is designed by merging the random linear network coding into the DTN routing, together with the replica re-allocation and memory management, and built on that encoding scheme, the intra/inter flow adaptive collaborative network coding is elaborated to implement the fresh custody-decision-encoding-forwarding mode. A decision-making strategy based on Bayesian Network(BN) measures the ``degree'' in a specific generation in networks by taking comprehensive consideration of current and historical network conditions to enhance the network robustness and self-adaptivity. By evaluating the delivery, delay and overhead performance on ONE and MATLAB platforms, the effectiveness of proposed strategies is validated in the end.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132621340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing digital solutions have high source coding efficiency but are not robust to channel variations, while analog solutions have the opposite characteristics. In this paper, we design a novel hybrid digital-analog (HDA) solution to embrace the advantages of both solutions and avoid their drawbacks. Basically, in each pair of stereo frames, one frame is digitally encoded to ensure basic quality and the other is analogly processed to opportunistically utilize good channels for better quality. To improve the system efficiency, we design a zigzag coding structure such that both intra-view and inter-view correlations can be explored through prediction in the frames to be analogly coded. A reference selection mechanism is proposed to further improve the coding efficiency. In addition, we address the problem of optimal power and bandwidth allocation between digital and analog streams. We implement a system, named Swift, and perform extensive trace-driven evaluations based on a software-defined radio platform. We show that Swift outperforms an omniscient digital scheme under the same bandwidth and power constraints, or can have around 2x power saving in order to achieve comparable performance. Subjective quality assessment evidences that Swift provides significantly better visual quality than a straightforward HDA extension of SoftCast.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131883697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we investigate the p-percent coverage problem(PCP) in WSNs which requires p% of an area should be monitored correctly and to find out any additional requirements of the connected p-percent coverage problem. We propose pDCDS algorithm which is a learning automaton based algorithm for PCP. pDCDS is a Degree-constrained Connected Dominating Set based algorithm which detect the minimum number of nodes to monitor an area. The simulation results demonstrate that pDCDS can remarkably improve the network lifetime.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116168578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, the mobility of smart mobile devices brings forward the challenge to determine how changes in mobile network conditions affect the bandwidth requirements of interacting services. In this paper, we construct a Network I-O model to describe the bandwidth dependencies in mobile service-oriented networks incorporating and extend on the principles of the Leontief Input-Output model in economics. Various factors such as bandwidth and service demand are accounted for in the model. The network I-O model lays the foundation for future objective developments in ubiquitous mobile computing scenarios. Results from simulation studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121315264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, profiling the energy consumed in the task execution is crucial to help the developers to build energy efficient applications. Therefore, the major challenge in the profiling approach is to accurately estimating the energy consumed for an application by the hardware components, such as CPU, memory, storage unit, and network interfaces. In this work, we develop and validate hardware and software profiling models and procedures. We profile smartphone CPU, where we consider multi-core CPUs and the impact of Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling mechanism on the power consumption. In addition, we profile smartphone storage unit by taking into account the writing and reading rate to the unit. Moreover, we experimentally validated these profiles on two diverse smartphones with different versions of operating systems. The experimental results reveal that our profiles are able to estimate the application energy accurately.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116731209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Researchers have therefore proposed several MAC protocols to decrease the energy consumption of the radio transceiver, which has increased the complexity of the firmware running on the nodes. In this paper, we show the consequences of ignoring runtimes of state-of-the-art MAC protocols, as proposed by some simulators. The quantitative discussion is based on a comparison between hardware measurements and simulations. We ported the Contiki operating system to STEAM-Sim, a recently developed simulator. With this setup it is possible to omit runtimes of firmware in a stepwise manner. We further used STEAM-Sim to accurately evaluate the X-MAC, Low Power Probing, and ContikiMAC radio duty-cycling protocols. The energy consumption profiles of hardware modules thus generated give interesting insights into the protocols. Scalability comparisons to the state-of-the-art simulator COOJA/MSPSim show that scalable and time-accurate simulation of WSNs in the nanosecond range is possible.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133400593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the complexity of its protocol design, the steady-state performance of MPTCP still remains largely unclear through model analysis. This introduces severe challenges to quantitatively study the efficiency, fairness and stability of existing MPTCP implementations. In this paper, we for the first time investigate the modeling of coupled congestion control and flow control algorithms in MPTCP. By proposing a closed-form throughput model, we reveal the relationship between MPTCP throughput and subflow characters, such as Round Trip Time (RTT), packet loss rate and receive buffer size. The extensive NS2-based evaluation indicates that the proposed model can be applied to understand the throughput of MPTCP in various situations. In particular, when MPTCP subflows have similar RTTs, the average Error Rate (ER) of the proposed model is less than 8%. Even in the situation where huge RTT difference exists between subflows, the model can still behave well with average ER less than 10%.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130958794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To the best of our knowledge the current paper is the first to address broadcast in WBAN. We first analyze several broadcast strategies inspired from the area of Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN). The proposed strategies are evaluated via the OMNET++ simulator that we enriched with realistic human body mobility models and channel models issued from the recent research on biomedical and health informatics. Contrary to the common expectation, our results show that existing research in DTN cannot be transposed without significant modifications in WBANs area. That is, existing broadcast strategies for DTNs do not perform well with human body mobility. However, our extensive simulations give valuable insights and directions for designing efficient broadcast in WBAN. Furthermore, we propose a novel broadcast strategy that outperforms the existing ones in terms of end-to-end delay, network coverage and energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131097688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Independent studies have previously confirmed that link quality fluctuates even in a static deployment and understanding stable durations, good and bad alike, can contribute to the efficient transmission of packets. We propose a two stage Markov model to characterise link quality fluctuation and to determine when and for how long nodes should transmit packets in burst. Both to develop and test our model, we deployed a wireless sensor network consisting of 14 nodes in a garden and transmitted more than 120,000 packets with different links. The experiment results confirm that our approach improved the packet delivery capacity of the links by up to 40% when compared with a baseline and by up to 25% when compared with a scheme that employs conditional distribution functions.","PeriodicalId":371317,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th ACM International Conference on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129927701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
