Aside from reducing the design and development costs by capitalizing on the investment in technology made by the commercial industry, using COTS allows simpler and faster upgrading to insert additional operating capability, rapid procurement from the world market, and provides the potential to reduce support costs and the opportunity for common support across a range of capabilities. Moreover, training requirements can often be reduced thanks to prior user familiarity with many COTS products. However, there are a number of critical factors that must be taken into account in selecting the appropriate COTS products. In particular, environmental idiosyncrasies must be accounted for to ensure that the COTS design is fully compliant and suitable for military use, and will deliver the design capability when subjected to the operational military environment.","PeriodicalId":371133,"journal":{"name":"Communications Engineer","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129653480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a hugely promising business for electronic component makers, mobile phone network operators and manufacturers, but, perhaps most importantly, an opportunity for the millions of people in emerging countries who do not yet have, or cannot afford, the convenience of mobile technology. A driving force behind the emerging markets handset initiative is the GSM Association (GSMA), which makes it possible for developing countries to avail of phones based on the C114 platform and feature the basic voice and text messaging functions. In addition, GSMA also focuses on lobbying governments about reducing taxes on handsets and easing the burden on operators.","PeriodicalId":371133,"journal":{"name":"Communications Engineer","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132432572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key element of this cable broadband service technology is DOCSIS 3.0, which allows several downstream and upstream radio frequency carriers to be bundled into a single logical channel to multiply capacity. It has been estimated that speeds up to 1 Gbit/s could theoretically be achieved by bonding an n number of RF channels. Apart from an obvious marketing advantage, operators can use the technology as a way of increasing network efficiency since statistical multiplexing works more effectively with wider channels.","PeriodicalId":371133,"journal":{"name":"Communications Engineer","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129111799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today mobile devices are used by around two billion people worldwide. Not only does the mobile phone allow people to keep in touch with their network of friends, but it has evolved to become an entertainment device allowing music, games and media to be consumed while on the move. In Europe, 158 million households own and use a television. But the nature of television is changing. Mobile TV is a consumer revolution in the making, 3G should be supplemented by a broadcast technology.","PeriodicalId":371133,"journal":{"name":"Communications Engineer","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127707038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
