We describe an innovative multimedia application that provides a student with the tools to build a strong foundation in visual reasoning. The system, called the Visual Reasoning Tutor, exploits the missing view problem as a mechanism to develop the visual reasoning abilities of students, and utilizes multimedia capabilities to enhance the learning process. This paper focuses on using a description language to design IMSs. We first propose a generalized synchronization model (GSM). It has fewer, more powerful interval operators, which are still intuitive to multimedia authors and users. Then, we present a new Multimedia Synchronization Description Language (MSDL), which is based on the GSM. SIM/sub vs/ computes the degree to which the spatial relationships among the objects in a database image conform to those specified in the query. SIM/sub vs/ recognizes translation, scale and rotation variants of an image, and variants generated by an arbitrary composition of translation, scale and rotation transformations. The performance of SIM/sub vs/ is compared with those of two previously-known algorithms using a testbed image collection. Such workspaces are composed of multiple, interacting tools. Through the capture, re-execution, and manipulation of a session with a CSW, it is possible to reuse valuable collaborative information, (e.g., the how-to process). The session is encapsulated into a session object composed of heterogeneous media streams that represent input sequences to CSW tools. CSW tools are modeled as plug-in components to the CSW. A stream controller process extends temporal-awareness to a CSW tool and its media. A session manager coordinates the various stream controllers and their media. Taking into consideration the application criticality as well as media quality-of-service (QoS) and timing requirements, we develop a multiresource management system that enables criticality-based resource preemption and QoS-based dynamic resource negotiation and adaptation. Our performance study indicates that our approximation solution is near optimal and that it outperforms a criticality-cognitive baseline algorithm. We also show that the dynamic QoS adjustment technique largely improves the quality of service for video streams. A symbolic query language, called \"colour description language\" has been designed to express high-level chromatic features of a painting, which cannot be obtained through a set of concrete examples. A visual extension of the language is then presented which introduces a feedback between the sentence composed and its pictorial meaning. A presentation specification contains three parts: the resources, the temporal information and the spatial information. We use an icon programming technique and a graphical user interface to allow the presentation designer to quickly specify what he/she wants. Our system takes these requirements and relies on inference rules written in Prolog to generate interactive presentations. These inference rules are based on interval temporal logic and important issues in multimedia presentations, such as the hardware limitations of an ordinary personal computer and the properties of a multimedia resource. Our prototype system run under Microsoft Windows. Three parts of a multi-resolution representation are expressed in a vector and are related to each other. The maximum and minimum values among the entries in the vector are obtained, and the absolute value of the difference between them is used for controlling the embedding of the seal. When the seal is needed, one can extract it from the picture. It is clear from the presented experimental results that the seal does not prevent one from seeing the picture comfortably.
