Gonzalez-Pons","doi":"10.1080/23322705.2022.2034378","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/23322705.2022.2034378","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT With passage of Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Traffickers Act and Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (FOSTA-SESTA) in 2018, technology became inextricably linked to sex trafficking in the United States (U.S.) public policy arena. FOSTA-SESTA aimed to combat sex trafficking by legislating digital spaces; however, largely missing from legislative debate was the inclusion of prevalence data to inform this policy making. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the existing empirical evidence on online-facilitated sex trafficking. Twenty-one articles were included in this systematic review, of which the vast majority focused on the U.S. and domestically trafficked youth. Findings indicate very few empirically documented cases of online-facilitated recruitment of victims for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Greater empirical evidence exists for trafficked persons advertised online for sexual exploitation; however, the person posting these advertisements (e.g., self, friend, trafficker) varies. Overall, the actual prevalence of online-facilitated trafficking remains unknown, suggesting the need for rigorous and large-scale representative studies. Opportunities for leveraging technology to support survivors and service organizations are discussed. The following databases were searched to January 2022: Cochrane, Embase, Google Scholar, Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Additional educational resources were added through snowball method and gray literature search. Inclusion criteria were materials for healthcare professionals or trainees on labor or organ trafficking published in any year or language. Exclusion criteria were empirical or survey research. The PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist was used. Of the 37 resources which met criteria, 32 (86.5%) defined labor trafficking, 24 (64.9%) described indicators or warning signs, 18 discussed prevention (48.6%), 16 (43.24%) included child labor, 9 (24.3%) were eligible for Continuing Medical Education credit, 8 (21.6%) included organ trafficking, 3 mentioned race or racism (8.12%), and 3 (8.12%) considered trainee education. Labor and organ trafficking directly inhibits progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goals 8, 10, 12, and 16.
