A simplified two-dimensional (2D) hydrophobic-hydrophilic (HP) lattice model is studied. Despite the simplicity of the model, the protein structure prediction problem on the HP lattice model has been proven to be NP-hard. The ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is a class of global search method. By incorporating the local search method with pull move into the ACO algorithm, a heuristic ACO algorithm (HACO) is put forward for solving 2D HP protein structure prediction problem. Eight general benchmark instances are tested. The numerical results show that the HACO algorithm is as good as or outperforms the other eight methods in the literature for seven out of eight instances. For the longest sequence with length 64, the HACO algorithm achieves the suboptimal solution, which has a difference of -1 from the optimal value. Experimental results show that the proposed HACO algorithm is a powerful method to predict the protein's structure.","PeriodicalId":370513,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127119763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the only non-invasive method for measuring brain activities from human scalp, it has been widely used in the area of medical diagnosis, neuroscience research, commercial application, etc. Most of the existing EEG acquisition systems, which are usually comprised of analog switches, operational amplifiers, analog-digital converters and specific instruments, have the weakness of high expenses, limited accuracy and difficult to update. Aiming at the need of cognitive science research and brain computer interface (BCI) design, a high precision EEG acquisition system based on the compact peripheral component interconnect (CompactPCI) platform was designed in this paper. A commercial EEG hat with adjustable electrodes was used to collect interested EEG signals. And ADS1299, a high resolution analogy front end IC proposed by Texas Instruments, was adopted in the system to acquire and convert EEG signals. To facilitate hardware expansion, system integration and data processing, the device was designed in the form of a 3U CompactPCI card and connected to an embedded computer. A graphical user interface (GUI) software was provided to control the data acquiring, storing and processing. In addition, the least mean squares (LMS) adaptive filter was realized to optimize the signals. The compact and highly integrated analogy circuit in this design significantly avoided the contamination of signals by environmental noises and reduced device-to-device connection complexity. Meanwhile, the system structure based on the CompactPCI platform made it easier to adjust signal channels and evaluate novel algorithms. The accuracy tests and alpha wave detection experiments showed that our EEG acquisition system had high accuracy and was applicable to various EEG-related experiments. The research in this paper may have reference value for the development of portable EEG acquisition system and BCI device.","PeriodicalId":370513,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127333013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So far, we know that this disease is progressive and can not be cured. In recent years, although some genes have been reported to be associated with COPD, the overlapped genetic associations can't be replicated. Therefore, it is difficult to synthesize and interpret these different findings. To address this issue, we conducted an integrated data analysis by combining network topological properties with support vector regression (SVR) to extract the potential susceptibility genes of COPD. As a result, COPD-related risk genes such as BBS9, ADAM19 and TGFB1 were identified, and these genes were supported by some previous and recent evidences. Our approach can help improve the accuracy in identifying COPD-related risk genes.","PeriodicalId":370513,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116127410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper is based on the wearable electronic eyeglasses aiming at measuring pulse signals with a three-axis acceleration sensor to catch body movement signals. It presents a removal method of the baseline drift using cubic spline interpolation, applies the least mean square (LMS) method which needs additional accelerometer signals in reducing the motion artifacts, and adopts the improved exceeding value method to detect the principal peaks and calculate the pulse rates of the pulse signals. Experiment results show that the combination of the three methods can effectively remove the baseline drift, reduce the motion artifacts, detect the principal peaks of pulse signals, and accurately calculate the pulse rates.","PeriodicalId":370513,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122945033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is based on foregone anatomical structures of retina constraints on the relative locations and the intensity information within the OD (optic disk) circle boundary. Firstly, OD circle boundary is obtained accurately using adaptive thresholding, morphological bottom-hat transform and region-based active contour model techniques. And then the fovea region is selected by analyzing the intensity information within the OD. Lastly, MF center is detected using mathematical morphology. The public DRIVE, HEI-MED and DIARETDB1 databases are used to test the performance of the algorithm. The MF center is detected correctly in 100% of the 35 images cases in the DRIVE database, in 98.8% of 169 images cases in the HEI-MED dataset, and in 93.3% of the 89 cases in the DIARETDB1 database. It takes only about 12 seconds for per image because of not relying on blood vessel segmentation in advance, which is the main advantage of the presented approach. The experimental results show that the method potentially should get a better performance than comparable methods presented in other literatures.","PeriodicalId":370513,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114164836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this method, a temporal mammogram registration framework which is based on spatial relations between regions of interest and graph matching was used to create correspondences between regions of current mammogram and regions of previous mammogram. 18 image features were then used to capture the differences (temporal changes) between the matched regions. To assess the contribution of temporl change information to the mass detection, 4 methods were designed to combine mass classification on image features measured on single regions and mass classification on temporal features to improve overall mass classification. The method was tested on 95 pairs of temporal mammograms using k-fold cross validation procedure. The experimental results showed that, when combining two classification results using linear combination or by taking minimum value, the Az score of overall classification performance increased from 0.8843 to 0.8958 and 0.8962 respectively. The results demonstrated that registering temporal mammograms, measuring temporal changes from matched regions and incorporating the change information in the mass classification improves the overall mass detection.","PeriodicalId":370513,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117009670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It possesses high value to acquire the PPG signal accurately. Because the available measurement site of transmission mode PPG sensor is very limited, this paper presents a reflective PPG signal sensor which consists of a photodiode and four light sources surrounding the photodiode. The Monte Carlo simulation was performed to decide the distance between the light source and photodiode. To test the efficacy of the developed sensor, PPG signals were captured from five different measurement sites. In this paper, recurrence plot and corresponding quantification analysis were utilized to analyze the heart rate variability data from healthy people and congestive heart failure sufferers. It was found that the measures for standard recurrence quantification analysis failed to distinguish between the two groups. Therefore, a multi-scale recurrence quantification analysis method was proposed, which is able to implement the quantitative analysis for recurrence structures of coarse-grained heartbeat interval series on multiple time scales. Experiment results showed that, on certain time scales, the recurrence structures of abnormal heart rate fluctuation from subjects with congestive heart failure could be reflected more clearly by multi-scale RQA parameters.","PeriodicalId":370513,"journal":{"name":"2014 7th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129204985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
