Supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, the Dutch Postgraduate School for Art History, the Royal Dutch Archaeological Association (KNOB), Gemeente Utrecht and Stichting Professor van Winter Fonds, the conference brought together sixteen researchers, established as well as emerging scholars from various disciplines, to reflect on the building organisation and administration of royal courts in Europe from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. In their introduction, the organisers drew attention to the multidisciplinary approach necessary to answer questions on the nature, purpose and organisational structure of courtly institutions, as well as their judicial status and their role in the formation of the state. From the fourteenth century onwards, a centralised administration devoted to building works developed at several courts in Europe, which resulted in complex logistical and organisational structures. The composite network of residences, complemented by other territorial acquisitions (forests, defence works, mills, etc.), represented the sovereign throughout the entire realm. They were connected by an intricate — often centralised — administration that improved the control and upkeep of these domanial buildings, which was the topic of this conference. The opening paper by Thomas Rapin (Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance, Tours) examined the built network of Jean, Duc de Berry, in the county of Poitou, the duchy of Berry and the duchy of Auvergne. A thorough examination of the building accounts of approximately twenty sites with ongoing construction resulted in an impressive database of local craftsmen, artists and master workmen. Rapin used the metadata to illuminate the different social status of the workers, as well as the breadth of the Duke’s artistic patronage, which contributed to the art trade on an international scale. Moving the geographical scope to the Burgundian lands, the two following papers, by Robert Stein (Leiden University) and Merlijn Hurx, argued that there was no central organising body for the lands of the Burgundian composite state. While Stein focused on the ducal ordinances for the Brabantine Office of Works as a confirmation of the pre-existing situation (rather than the start of a new centralisation), Hurx’s insightful comparison of the most important territories (Flanders, Artois and Brabant) showed an increasingly centralised management of construction sites. Through the comparison of the different building administrations, Hurx searched for a common ‘Burgundian’ aspect in the organisation of the different territories.","PeriodicalId":37034,"journal":{"name":"Court Historian","volume":"25 1","pages":"82 - 84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14629712.2020.1728939","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49154002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a trope particularly ubiquitous of the skáldasögur — poets’ sagas — where a skáld’s reputation as warrior and hero is augmented through interactions with historical figures of the Scandinavian world. The resultant depictions of various cultures and societies are one of the interesting features of the corpus. The late thirteenth-century Gunnlaugs saga provides a notably rich exemplar of the motif of the travelling skáld. The hero, Gunnlaug Illugason, travels widely, visiting the royal courts of England, Viking Dublin and Sweden, alongside various non-royal courts including that of Norway. Of particular interest is the portrayal of Æthelred II (978–1016) and the English court, which is not only at odds with the depictions of other courts within the narrative, but with the historical tradition of Æthelred’s fraught kingship. This article examines the differing portrayals of kingship within Gunnlaugs saga, questioning how Icelanders perceived English rulers in contrast to their Scandinavian counterparts, and whether Æthelred’s characterisation as a good king is authorial invention, or remnant cultural memory of his kingship.","PeriodicalId":37034,"journal":{"name":"Court Historian","volume":"25 1","pages":"1 - 14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14629712.2020.1728930","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43079209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a brief period the town was governed by a group of men who simultaneously held court positions. But these were not outsiders. The regular presence of the court meant that uniquely at Windsor the King was able to pack a borough corporation with royal servants who had genuine local connections. One visible legacy of their short time in office is the town’s Guildhall. This unusual case illustrates the potential influence of the royal household in local politics in early-modern England but also some of the limits on that influence.","PeriodicalId":37034,"journal":{"name":"Court Historian","volume":"25 1","pages":"51 - 64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14629712.2020.1728933","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44254893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lady Troy provided a stable childhood for Elizabeth I and Edward VI. Blanche Parry was the constant companion and confidante of Elizabeth for fifty-six years and her position at the centre of the court was recognised. Blanche Parry’s close connection to Lord Burghley and Sir Robert Cecil was a key factor in cementing and facilitating their relationship with the Queen. This paper brings forward new discoveries from Blanche’s Bacton epitaph on the monument she commissioned, from the contemporary pronunciation of Elizabeth’s name, to the process of the Queen’s visual transformation to Gloriana. Further, Blanche’s probable role in facilitating, through finance, the publication of the Welsh Bible, and hence the preservation of the Welsh language, is now clear. These researches led to the discovery of an unrecorded ‘Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I’ in the United States and to the identification of the priceless Bacton Altar Cloth as the only known surviving material from the Queen’s 1,900 dresses.","PeriodicalId":37034,"journal":{"name":"Court Historian","volume":"25 1","pages":"31 - 50"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14629712.2020.1728932","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46895172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a bold move for the Prado, this exhibition coming just two years after the museum dedicated its first show to a female painter, the pioneering still-life artist Clara Peeters. Ruiz Gómez has brought together significant loans, among them fifty-six paintings, from European and American institutions. As painters, these two women achieved recognition and fame in their lifetimes: Sofonisba at the Spanish Habsburg court and Lavinia in her later career in Rome, enjoying the patronage of popes Gregory XIII and Clement VIII. Fontana, born in Bologna in , the daughter of the painter Prospero who trained her, is regarded as the first professional female artist. Aside from mothering eleven children, Fontana ran a professional studio, painting small devotional works, religious altarpieces and portraits of Bolognese society. By the s, Lavinia was the most sought-after portraitist for Bolognese noblewomen. Her husband, the painter Gian Paolo Zappi, supported her lucrative career as her assistant and manager. Ruiz Gómez presents a fascinating survey of these two women, retracing their careers in seven sections, juxtaposing them, their lives and art works: self-portraits, portraits, drawings, religious paintings, portrait miniatures and medals. Although they never met, Fontana was very much influenced by Anguissola. In the first room, visitors are brought face to face with two self-portraits, both ladies playing at a spinet. Anguissola depicts herself elegantly dressed in black, her attire influenced by Habsburg court fashion, demurely playing her instrument (cat. ). Lavinia’s later portrayal is more self-assured, as she boldly engages the viewer, flaunting her talents both as painter and musician (cat. ). Music and instruments formed a central part of a lady’s education in the Renaissance and is the subject of Michael Cole’s essay in the catalogue. An aristocratic lady from Cremona, Anguissola studied painting there with Bernardino Campi, and section two of the exhibition includes some of her most successful works. Michelangelo reportedly praised her clever creations, in particular, her celebrated drawing of her brother, Asdrubal Bitten by a Crawfish (c. ). Another noteworthy drawing that is exhibited shows a young girl with her maid, underscoring the young Sofonisba’s technique (cat. ), as does her rarely seen  Self-Portrait which is executed with great virtuosity (cat. ). Just as intriguing is her portrait of Bernardino Campi Portraying Sofonisba Anguissola, a discourse in which she paints her teacher painting her (cat. ).","PeriodicalId":37034,"journal":{"name":"Court Historian","volume":"25 1","pages":"79 - 81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14629712.2020.1728938","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43631350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The coach appeared as a general European phenomenon from the 1550s, but did not immediately represent the adoption of any technological change over its predecessors; by the early seventeenth century, richly decorated high-status vehicles had become a common sight, as had the urban traffic jam. These changes are exemplified in the extensive records of the production and decoration of coaches for the courts of Queen Elizabeth and James I, with the use of the high-status coach for courtly gifts and diplomatic presents. While Henry VIII may have used the carriage only very rarely, his daughter Elizabeth not only delighted in the creation of very expensively fitted coaches, but also continued to ride throughout her life. This era saw the development of coach etiquette for the particular situation of a travelling interior space (with a public face) used by both sexes, and the development of formal processional use (with occupied or empty coaches representing their owners), while the high status male rider continued as a phenomenon into the twentieth century.","PeriodicalId":37034,"journal":{"name":"Court Historian","volume":"24 1","pages":"205 - 220"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14629712.2019.1675318","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46590037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All three Germans were active as horse-trainers at Protestant courts. This article argues that their unusual attitudes, founded upon values such as love, empathy, piety, patience and knowledge, may well have been influenced by specific aspects of Martin Luther’s thought as expressed in the reformer’s Commentary on Genesis and other writings. In making this argument, the article explores the imbrication of the Protestant Reformation and early modern horsemanship.","PeriodicalId":37034,"journal":{"name":"Court Historian","volume":"24 1","pages":"235 - 249"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/14629712.2019.1675322","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43639661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
