As multi-functional mobile phones, i.e., smartphones, become widespread, it has become possible to exploit their processing power and built-in sensors. These enable them to serve as an interface for operating a variety of home appliances in a way suitable for the user's particular state and preferences. This paper proposes a smartphone-based platform that provides a means of implementing a wide range of operations for home electrical appliances, and also describes verification of its feasibility. It first describes the design and implementation of a networked remote control unit, the key component of the platform, which receives operation commands from a smartphone, and transmits infrared signals that control the required appliance. It then presents a home appliance operation application that has been implemented on a smartphone to verify the feasibility of the proposed platform. The application works with either the touch screen or the built-in acceleration sensor of the smartphone, and also with an external sensor via Bluetooth communication.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122350246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present results of a measurement campaign performed on a realistic network testbed to evaluate and compare their performance in relation to reference measurements obtained by the traditional client/server approach. The results underline the expected superior performance of these new architectures for many use cases. But we were also able to identify several severe weaknesses of their particular implementations. In particular, we could observe a heavy performance degradation under certain conditions, i.e., mainly for connections characterized by high delay and high packet loss. Furthermore, we investigate adaptations to increase their performance and we evaluate a prefetching mechanism for CCNx to improve its performance under these adverse conditions.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127033894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a typical cellular mobile network, most of the energy is consumed by the Base Stations (BS). Recent studies have revealed significant spatial and temporal traffic load imbalances in the RANs. This results in some BSs being lightly loaded while others are heavily loaded. This paper proposes a novel sleep mode operation that exploits the traffic load dynamics in order to provide energy saving opportunities. The sleep mode operation is implemented using the sum product algorithm (SPA) by iteratively exchanging messages among the cells in order to invoke the sleep modes. The proposed sleep mode operation is shown to produce operational power reduction gains of up to 36%.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127295185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the emerging paradigm of interoperable radio networks, the unlicensed users are allowed to use the radio frequency that is unoccupied by the licensed users in temporal and spatial manner. To support this spectrum optimization functionality, the unlicensed users are required to sense the radio environment periodically for being aware of the high-priority licensed users. Wideband spectrum sensing is a challenging task for the present analog-to-digital converters used in wireless systems due to the constraints of digital signal processing unit. Exploiting on the sparseness of the wideband signal, the spectrum can be recovered with only few compressive measurements, consequently employs relief of high-speed signal processing units. This paper presents a novel wideband sensing approach where a significant portion of wideband spectrum is approximated via compressive sensing rather than entire wideband spectrum estimation, thus reducing computational complexity for the cognitive radios. Detection performances are evaluated through spectrum estimation of the desired frequency band by means of a well-known energy detection method. Finally, reduction of computational burden and memory spaces obligation are described compared to the conventional compressive sensing preceded over a single RF chain, without interfering with the detection performances.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124682414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effective resource management is important not only to prevent the unnecessary resource waste but also to increase in the resource utilization efficiency in the satellite systems with limited resource environment. In this paper, we refer two resource management schemes adjusting power and bandwidth of parallel multi-beam, in order to achieve the substantial performance gain and reasonable proportional fairness. These schemes dealt with the tradeoff problem between different aims of system objectives. In this paper, we compare the performance of these schemes, and investigate the gaps of those that are shown according to amount of traffic overload and dominant resource. The performance is evaluated by taking into account the impact to the system environment, and we propose a possible approach to the adaptive resource management method in the multi-beam satellite networks.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115142948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, we propose a holistic framework which supports consumers on all stages of the consumer decision process by using the participatory sensing approach. The consumer decision process is the major part of the consumer behavior, and represents the set of stages a consumer follows when purchasing a product. On the other hand, participatory sensing is a recently developed approach in the mobile information systems domain, and enables users to be directly involved especially in the data collection, analysis and sharing processes through their mobile phones. The proposed framework is designed to incorporate this significant capability of participatory sensing into the consumer behavior domain. The aim of designing this framework is to build an effective, time and cost saving mobile information system for consumers by supporting their decision process. In addition to designing the framework, a working prototype is developed using mobile phones in order to show the applicability of the proposed framework. The obtained results are also presented with an overview of existing related studies. This study is also intended to serve as a base for further studies regarding the effective use of the participatory sensing approach and mobile information systems in the consumer behavior domain.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116006032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Al-Begain","doi":"10.1109/NGMAST.2013.13","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NGMAST.2013.13","url":null,"abstract":"In the cloud era, security has become a renewed source of concerns. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) and the Economical Denial of Sustainability (EDoS) that can affect the pay-per-use model, which is one of the most valuable benefits of the cloud, can again become very relevant especially with the introduction of new policies in enterprises such as the \"Bring Your Own Device\" (BYOD). Therefore, this paper presents a novel framework called Enhanced DDoS-Mitigation System (Enhanced DDoS-MS) which is a step further of our previous framework (DDoS-MS) that can be used to encounter EDoS attacks by testing the first packet from the source of requests (legitimate or malicious) to establish the legitimacy of the source using a Graphical Turing Test (GTT). It differs from the (DDoS-MS) in several aspects such as the using of puzzles as a reactive step, replacing the overlay filtering system by the Reverse Proxy in hiding the location of the protected servers, and changing the method of verifying the users in a way that can encounter the persistent attackers. To achieve this, it monitors the remaining packets using an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and a Reverse Proxy (RP) server. Then it delays the requests of the suspicious users using Crypto Puzzles. The novelty of the proposed framework lies in decreasing the end-to-end latency for the legitimate user by testing only their first packet. We use a layered defence system that checks the legitimacy of the users, their packets' integrity, and their traffic rate. Moreover, the proposed framework intends to hide the location of the protected servers to enhance their security.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116369649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To discourage selfishness, two approaches are typically taken: i) in trade based systems, devices agree on a retribution for the execution of a task, ii) in trust based systems rogue devices are detected and announced by their peers. We show that in some scenarios found in wireless mobile networks both present sub-optimal results. The paper describes and evaluates a hybrid service, combining trade and trust-based characteristics. The service suits well privacy requirements as it assumes and encourages users to frequently change their pseudonyms. The paper shows that the service detects several misbehaving approaches, even without requiring interacting devices to be connected to the Internet.","PeriodicalId":369374,"journal":{"name":"2013 Seventh International Conference on Next Generation Mobile Apps, Services and Technologies","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133467746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
