We implemented a rate-modifying activity to change the processing time of the jobs that followed this activity on each machine. Therefore, the actual processing time of a job varied given that it depended not only on its starting time but also on whether it was scheduled before or after the rate-modifying activity. Hence, the objective of this study was to determine the job sequence on each machine and the position of rate-modifying activity on each machine so that the total completion time was minimized. To accomplish this, the role played by the visuo-spatial sketchpad and phonological loop with regard to the working memory task in three experiments, and three distraction tasks were manipulated to investigate it. The results of experiments 1–3 suggest that training to perform mental arithmetic calculations and digit span enhances participants’ ability to retain visuo-spatial and phonological loop information. Additionally, children who had not received mental abacus training depended on the phonological loop to retain numerical information. We speculate that these children may execute mental calculations using their visuo-spatial sketchpad to form mental imagery. Customers arrive into the system according to a Poisson process. Service times, repair times, and start-up times are assumed to be generally distributed. The first service is essential for all arrived customers, and the second service is optional, which is demanded by some customers after their essential service is completed. For this queuing system, the expected cost function per unit time is constructed to search the joint optimum threshold values of the (N, p) at the minimum cost. We also obtain the explicit closed-form expression of the optimal solutions. A sensitivity analysis is performed to evaluate the impacts on the optimum threshold value. In total, 6392 work-related accident reports were filed from 2001 to 2008. These reports were acquired from the worker compensation insurance database of the Bureau of Labor Insurance (BLI), Taiwan. The BLI data reveal that Thai workers accounted for 70% of all occupational accidents, and roughly 77.4% of these accidents involved workers aged ≤34 years. Moreover, most occupational accidents involved either companies with <30 workers or with 100–299 workers. The leading injury cause was caught in machinery (74.5%). The incidence of accidents involving foreign blue-collar workers differed according to worker sex, with male workers involved in significantly more occupational accidents than female workers during the period analyzed. In particular, in an uncertain and complex situation, making a choice becomes more difficult for decision makers. In this article, we analyzed the risks of a particular decision in linguistic terms and based on interval-valued fuzzy numbers (IVFNs). We also extended a similarity measure in the technique for order preference based on similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) approach by measuring the similarity of each alternative to positive and negative ideal IVFNs. Rather than calculating the distance between the alternatives and the positive/negative ideal solution in the TOPSIS method, we used the similarity measure between IVFNs to replace distance in this approach. Even with the same distance between IVFNs, the measure may have different shapes or directions, which may lead to nonintuitive results. In the proposed method, we used a fixed ideal solution that could simplify the calculations of a similarity measure between IVFNs. Convenience stores generally make their order decisions according to point of sale (POS) analysis. However, due to the effects of uncertain factors, such as the weather, temperature, the number of customers, and promotion activity of substitute products, the order quantity based on POS may not actually match with real demand, especially for perishable items. In this study, a novel warning system is established by employing the support vector machine (SVM) to modify the order quantity; and the Taguchi method is applied to determine the optimal portfolio of the factors that may influence the prediction accuracy of the SVM. Using actual data from a convenience store, which is a part of the President Chain Store Corporation in Taiwan, the prediction accuracy of the warning system was evaluated. Each unreliable server has different breakdown rates in its busy times and idle times. The system performance measures are obtained by a matrix geometric method. Some important relationships between the system performance measures are given. An optimization model is developed for the optimum numbers of servers and repairmen to minimize the expected total cost of the system. The objective is to minimize the summation of the weighted earliness and tardiness, subject to the number of tardy jobs. The given n jobs with different earliness and tardiness weights have different release times but the same due date. An algorithm is proposed to efficiently generate Pareto-optimal solutions for any possible number of tardy jobs. The accuracy and run time of our algorithm are discussed. A cross-sectional survey of a convenient sample of 765 participants was conducted in 2009. The results showed that 652 (85.2%) participants reported that they had at least one musculoskeletal symptom within the previous year. The most common musculoskeletal symptoms-affected body sites included the shoulders (63.5%), neck (59.9%), and lower back (56.9%). Multiple logistic regression analysis suggested that frequent lifting of objects has a strong relationship with musculoskeletal symptoms of the neck (odds ratio, OR = 1.70), shoulders (OR = 1.70), upper back (OR = 1.58), lower back (OR = 1.75), elbow (OR = 1.61), fingers/wrists (OR = 1.68), hips/thighs (OR = 1.50), and knees (OR = 1.53). The working hours per day were associated with elbow (OR = 1.11), fingers/wrists (OR = 1.09), and knees (OR = 1.12). Female cooks had a higher risk of musculoskeletal symptoms in the upper back than male cooks (OR = 1.55). Higher body mass index was also related to musculoskeletal symptoms of the shoulders and ankles/feet.
