In order to clarify the genesis of the relief forms of the Kinburngska аrena and in general the formation of the territory of the Oleshkivsky Sands, a map-scheme of the types of relief forms of the Kinburnska arena is presented for the first time. Another goal of this research was to find out the priority of fluvial or аeolian processes in the formation of arena landforms. In this regard, for the first time, micromorphological and morphoscopic studies of sand grains from deposits of hilly landforms were conducted here. The typology of landforms showed the geomorphological diversity of the arena and evidenced the manifestation of specific, here and there unique landforms. Unique for the territory of Europe here are discrete parallel ridges of the south of the arena, which are a manifestation of giant ripples (diluvial dunes). The author examines their formation in the context of the diluvial paradigm, in particular in relation to fluvioglacial processes at the end of the Pleistocene and flood-overflow processes in the Holocene. The specific formations of the arena here include ridges and depressions formed as a result of the flow of water masses from the water area of the Dniprovsko-Buzkyi liman to the Black Sea (western part of the arena), as well as its Yagorlytskyi Bay (eastern part of the arena). The analysis of the parameters of sand grains from the deposits of various geocomplexes of the Kinburnska arena showed the predominance of weakly rolled grains, as well as the dominance of bugor and bugor-stepped texture of the surface sand grains with almost universal development of micro- and nanoforms on their surface. The typology of the relief forms of the arena and the interpretation of the parameters of the analyzed sand grains proved the dominant role of fluvial processes in the formation of the relief of sandy deposits of the Kinburnska arena and the subordinate importance of aeolian processes.","PeriodicalId":36917,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Geographical Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49640692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the study is to determine the environmental determinants of sustainable development of countries with taking into account the need to harmonize the economy, ecosystem and human well-being. The novelty of the study is the further development of scientific approaches to assessing the interrelation between EPI and the structural elements of the “green” economy. The results of EPI statistical analysis showed that less than 1/3 of 34 European countries improved the effectiveness of their environmental policy in 2020 compared to 2018. Strategic positioning on the matrix models allowed to identify unequal numbers of strategic groups of countries with differences in the values of environmental determinants of sustainable development. It is substantiated that environment affect people’s life expectancy. Currently, the lowest value of healthy life expectancy is in Ukraine compared to other European countries. It is established that the unevenness in the dynamism of business in Europe is insignificant. However, the efficiency of the use of natural resources in the process of production and consumption, unfortunately, is not the same. The average share of renewable energy consumption in the sample of European countries is 23.5%. It is shown that a high share of renewable energy consumption does not guarantee a high level of environmental efficiency. However, this can be seen as an option to address the country’s energy security. It is proposed to combine the ecological determinants of sustainable development of the country into 4 groups: environmental protection; structural restructuring of the economy; resource efficiency and biodiversity; well-being and health of the population. It is concluded that positive changes in only one environmental determinant does not guarantee an increase in the level of environmental efficiency of the country (especially in the short term).","PeriodicalId":36917,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Geographical Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46440595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article reflects the most important factors that had an impact on the urban network in the historical framework of the inter-census periods 1897–1926–1939; 1939–1959–1970; 1970–1979; 1979–1989, 1989–2001, and 2001–2022. Such important historical events as the industrial revolution in Europe, wars and famine, the rapid development of natural resources, administrative and territorial reforms, urbanization, and militarization of the economy are highlighted. The impact of mass resettlement, the construction of hydroelectric power plants and large enterprises, the development of the transport network, and migrations are reflected. The influence of the USSR’s collapse, the construction policy of the ‘factory-city’ principle, and the Chornobyl disaster are shown up. The article pays attention to the impact on the urban network of the appearance of independent Ukraine, the repatriation of Crimean Tatars, the processes of voucherization and privatization, and the fourth and fifth waves of migration. The processes of the formation and development of agricultural holdings as well as the construction of new and the restoration of old factories are shown to have had their impact on the urban network. The huge impact on the urban network of temporary occupation of parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is reflected too.","PeriodicalId":36917,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Geographical Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41834854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Green and blue zones of the city, providing ecosystem services, in particular cultural services (CES), reduce such risks. In our opinion, the consumption of CES to the maximum extent requires, among other things, that green areas are perceived as attractive to humans. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to find out the factors of perception and identify the reasons that underlie the choice of green areas for visiting, as well as limit the possibilities of their usage. The empirical material of the study was the data collected in the framework of the project Transnational partnership towards academic integration in Europe: Urban blue-green infrastructure in Europe’s East and West (LINC). To collect the data, an unlimited online survey and a direct survey of Kyiv residents in the form of individual interviews were used. The survey revealed the main factors of residents’ positive perceptions of green spaces. Kyiv inhabitants consider the spaces with woody vegetation and water bodies to be the most attractive. The nature of the green areas usage indicated that the most popular are the CEPs for recreation (87%), maintenance of moral and psychological (64%) as well as physical (52%) health. Thus, the areas that are able to provide them are chosen by Kyiv citizens as attractive for visiting. Also, the study identified problems that limit visiting green areas. Most of them are related to poor maintenance and lack of time for visiting. Littering was identified as the main problem (83.5%). However, the overall level of satisfaction of residents with the condition, quantity, and accessibility of green areas, which had above average and high scores, indicate that the problems related to individual areas, and not to the blue-green infrastructure of the city in general.","PeriodicalId":36917,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Geographical Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41817236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conceptually, the project is based on an inclusive approach: the representation of the region as a complete spatial system through the use of methodological apparatus and tools of geographical research combined with practice-oriented and people-centric direction. This made it possible to comprehensively describe all traditional areas, as well as modern, actual directions of the spatial development of the region. The geo-information portal presents 11 thematic sections containing 58,502 objects, showing 309 indicators and 394 layers of data. The project is an example of successful collaboration between institutions of local government and civil society: the Public Organization Researchers of Ukraine Society, Kherson Regional State Administration, Kherson State University, and territorial communities of Kherson Region. It became the most powerful and successful initiative to support the regional and local development of the Kherson region on the eve of the war. Key characteristics that determine the uniqueness of the implemented project include: (1) generalization in a single register of fundamental scientific geospatial data and relevant information to ensure the daily needs and requests of regional administration and local self-government; (2) strengthening practice-oriented and human-centered accents in the proposed cartographic products through the presentation and visualization of individual ‘non-traditional’ indicators and layers of spatial data; (3) the possibility of using the information system of the portal as an effective decision-making tool both at the level of individual territorial communities and at the level of the region; (4) interactive nature, intuitive interface, which ensures accessibility and ease of use regardless of age characteristics and professional training of the user; (5) the possibility of building educational strategies for schooling and professional education in the region using the resources of the geo-information portal as a digital learning environment.","PeriodicalId":36917,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Geographical Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49562972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Theoretical and methodological aspects and the evolution of approaches to the study of the essence and assessment of the labor potential of the region are highlighted. The author’s approach to the interpretation of the structure of the labor potential of the region with the justification of its quantitative and qualitative characteristics is proposed, methodological tools for assessing the state of the labor potential of the region are developed. The methodology was tested on official statistical data on the regions of Ukraine for 2020. Based on the analysis of the obtained integral characteristics, the regions of Ukraine were grouped, taking into account the qualitative and quantitative components of the labor potential. Spatial regularities in the placement of the labor potential of the territories of Ukraine are revealed. Most regions of the southwestern part of Ukraine are characterized by high levels of the qualitative component of the labor potential (mainly due to high health indicators) and high levels of the quantitative component of the labor potential, but it has been found that the existing labor potential in these regions is not used effectively. Large industrial regions in the east of Ukraine have a high level of the qualitative component, but an insufficient level of the quantitative component of the labor potential. The northern regions of the country are characterized by low indicators of both quantitative and qualitative components. Firstly, it concerns the Chernihiv and Sumy regions. Southern regions, such as Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, are characterized by high rates of the quantitative component of the labor potential against the background of a low level of the qualitative component. Kyiv is the only region with a high level of qualitative and quantitative component of labor potential. The stages to study ethnic tourism resources have been analyzed as follows: the study of geographical and historical specificities of formation of population ethnic structure; establishment of the degree of population ethnic variety and its dynamics; the study of the material and the spiritual cultural heritage of ethnic groups; quantitative estimation of attractiveness of ethnic tourism objects; mapping of ethnic tourism objects and development of ethnographic excursion routes. Chernivtsi as polyethnic and multi-cultural city is a notable example of sustainability of the development of ethnic tourism. The poly-ethnicity and multiculturality of the city was favored by its ethno-geographic disposition at the junction of three ethnic lands and the centuries-old history when the city was part of different states where each state essentially effected on population’s ethnic structure and left its imprint on city-planning and architectural environment as well as on its citizens’ material and spiritual culture. Chernivtsi is regarded to be an architectural pearl (represented by various architectural styles), and is downtown possesses the status of the area of conservation. The Government has registered 706 monuments of cultural heritage in Chernivtsi, where 20 monuments are of national value, and the architectural ensemble of the former residency of Bukovynian and Dalmatian Metropolitans is included into the UN List of World Heritage Sites. The objects of cultural heritage of the old city were grouped and systemized by their ethnic belonging. Relative quantitative (point-based) evaluation of ethnic tourism resources was conducted as to degree of their attractiveness. The whole diversity of ethnic tourism resources was for the purpose of primary point-based evaluation grouped into 15 blocks, each of them having their own specificity, own cognitive and attractive potentiality, and own methods of their study. Evaluation scales take into account the significance, aesthetic attractiveness, and the informative value of ethnic tourism objects. Ukrainians, Germans, Austrians, Romanians and Moldavians, Jews, Poles, Armenians were those ethnic groups that left the most notable “traces” in the material and spiritual cultural heritage within the poly-ethnic space of Chernivtsi. Mapping the objects of ethnic tourism allowed for the establishment of particularities of spatial disposition of the objects of respective ethnic culture and subsequent development of excursion routes to the biggest ethnic communities of Chernivtsi. The article evaluates the demographic-residential, industrial-logistics and innovation, service, administrative and management, and budget functions of the Kyiv metropolitan region. The study confirmed that the region is characterized by considerable spatial disparities in socioeconomic development. This is related to remarkable polycentricity and essential differences in the intensity and diversification of the main functions’ performance. Typification of the territorial units of the Kyiv metropolitan region by the level of socio-economic development and features of the diversification of the functions was carried out. Solving the problem is based on the development of a balanced and effective spatial organization of the Kyiv metropolitan region and the amplification of a hierarchical system of centers (poles) of development in the suburbs. The latter will perform a number of functions of the metropolis and balance the development of the entire metropolitan region driven by the wide range of suburbanization processes. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the identification of developed and prospective centers of the Kyiv metropolitan region, which is an important basis for developing a strategy for the post-war reconstruction of the territory. It contributes to the contemporary discourse by the development of a research methodology of a quantitative assessment of polycentricity in order to identify the developed and prospective centers of the metropolitan region.","PeriodicalId":36917,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Geographical Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45607054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
