The proposed HErSRM is a generalized model which contains some existing NHPP-based SRMs like Goel-Okumoto SRM and Delayed S-shaped SRM, and can represent a variety of software fault-detection patterns. Such characteristics are useful to solve the model selection problem arising in the practical use of NHPP-based SRMs. More precisely, we discuss the statistical inference of HErSRM based on the EM (expectation-maximization) algorithm. In numerical experiments, we show that the HErSRM outperforms conventional NHPP-based SRMs with respect to fitting ability.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129937475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As computer technology has shown significantly rapid pace of evolution, it is necessary to take the evolution into consideration when we develop computer systems. Especially in a large-scale project, the evolutions in computer technology during its term are often seen; thus, it is necessary to establish simply applicable schemes as basic concepts to develop dependable system. Basic considerations are presented here by extruding its requirements for dependable systems from wide area railway systems requiring on-time traffic operation and safety under high-density traffic. Many dependable control systems have already been delivered based on autonomous decentralized concept using COTS systems and been showing their sufficient dependability.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121401549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for organizing redundancy that provides high degree of fault tolerance and enhances performance. We replicate both the pipeline registers and the pipeline stage combinational logic. The replicated logic receives its inputs from the primary pipeline registers while writing its output to the replicated pipeline registers. The organization of redundancy in the proposed conjoined pipeline system supports overclocking, provides concurrent error detection and recovery capability for soft errors, intermittent faults and timing errors, and flags permanent silicon defects. The fast recovery process requires no checkpointing and takes three cycles. Back annotated post-layout gate level timing simulations, using 45 nm technology, of a conjoined two stage arithmetic pipeline and a conjoined five stage DLX pipeline processor, with forwarding logic, show that our approach achieves near 100% fault coverage, under a severe fault injection campaign, while enhancing performance, on an average by about 20%, when dynamically overclocked and 35%, when maximally overclocked.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129999461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the past decades, many methods have been proposed for maintenance effort estimation. However, most existing estimation methods only produce point predictions. Due to the inherent uncertainties and complexities in the maintenance process, the accurate point estimates are often obtained with great difficulties. Therefore some prior studies have been focusing on probabilistic predictions. Analogy Based Estimation (ABE) is one popular point estimation technique. This method is widely accepted due to its conceptual simplicity and empirical competitiveness. However, there is still a lack of probabilistic framework for ABE model. In this study, we first propose a probabilistic framework of ABE (PABE). The predictive PABE is obtained by integrating over its parameter k number of nearest neighbors via Bayesian inference. In addition, PABE is validated on four maintenance datasets with comparisons against other established effort estimation techniques. The promising results show that PABE could largely improve the point estimations of ABE and achieve quality probabilistic predictions.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120954748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though the analytical treatment of NHGPs as stochastic point processes is not so easy in general, they have an advantage to involve the NHPPs as well as a gamma renewal process as special cases, and are rather tractable on parameter estimation by means of the method of maximum likelihood. We perform the goodness-of fit test for several NHGP-based software reliability models (SRMs) and compare them with the existing NHPP-based ones. Throughout a numerical example with a real software fault data, it is shown that the NHGP-based SRMs can provide the better goodness-of-fit performances in earlier testing phases than the NHPP-based ones, but approach to them gradually as the testing time goes on. This implies that our new software reliability modeling framework with flexibility can describe better the software-fault detection phenomenon when the less information on software fault data is available.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129769863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Utilizing quorum systems, we present a quorum based protocol called SOQ to let nodes update and query service information to a selected set of servers (a quorum). Due to the intersection property of quorums, nodes can obtain latest updated information by simply accessing a quorum. To make the protocol adaptive to network partitions, we propose update/query triggering mechanisms to determine when nodes trigger updates/queries. A quorum access strategy for nodes to judiciously select a quorum to access is designed so that the probability that a query returns the latest service information is maximized. We give in-depth analysis of the protocol, including the communication overhead, load and availability relationship of quorum systems and timeliness analysis of distributed applications. Our experimental studies show that SOQ is resilient to network partitions without incurring large overheads.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127690421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These generated signatures are embedded into the instruction memory and then used to do the run time error checking. We use VLIW processor to simulation. In this paper, the processor degradation can be improved by doing the whole block error checking after the branch instruction, the fault detection latency is improved by doing the intermediate error checking at the R-type instruction, and the memory overhead is reduced by storing the R-DCT-S to the R-type instruction. The experimental results show that the proposed watchdog has a very high error detection coverage and shortest error detection latency to detect either single fault or multi-faults, no matter what the fault is transient or intermittent.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121557638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More recently, the enterprise solutions have shifted to campus systems due to the academic global competition that is in a state of constant change. In this paper, several different levels of integrations are introduced and a practical campus curriculum system consisting of a course preparation system, a course enrollment system, and an assessment system is presented. The core considerations of the proposed architecture are flexibility and performance; besides, the evaluation and measurement are also under discussion.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128985171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the case for resource constrained embedded systems. Such an evolution may be driven by environment or the execution context. The adequacy of the service delivery with respect to the current operational conditions depends on the ability to tune the software configuration accordingly. This is true for application services, but also for dependability services, in particular the fault tolerance software. This paper presents a design of fault tolerance software for its runtime adaptation. This design relies on a reflective framework and open component based software engineering (CBSE) techniques. We demonstrate in this paper the feasibility of adapting componentized fault tolerance at a meta-level of the application.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130351303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Software rejuvenation is performed in order to counteract resource exhaustion. Two different levels of rejuvenation actions are implemented, perfect, and minimal. Moreover the concept of a failed rejuvenation is introduced to model the fact that rejuvenation due to some circumstances cannot be accomplished. As the load of such a system varies from hour to hour but reveals a cyclic behavior from day to day, different rejuvenation policies for each period of the day are proposed using a cyclic non-homogeneous Markov (CNHM) model. As a measure of performance, the steady-state expected downtime cost is considered. Additionally, to set off the need of CNHM modeling, the system is also modeled by a Homogeneous Markov Chain (HMC) and the performance results are compared.","PeriodicalId":369064,"journal":{"name":"2008 14th IEEE Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133868375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
