Aloe vera, vitamin E, Tween-20, and Tween-80 have been reported as skin penetration enhancers (SPEs). Nevertheless, their effectiveness as vitamin C enhancers has not been extensively studied. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the aforementioned SPEs in enhancing the permeation of vitamin C in peel-off mask formulations using Franz diffusion method. Several peel-off mask formulations containing vitamin C and different SPEs at concentrations of 0.5% and 2% were prepared and evaluated for their characteristics, stability, and vitamin C permeation using porcine ear skin. All formulations exhibited a pH range of 4.19 - 4.33, a viscosity range of 18802 - 113094 cps, and a drying time of approximately 18 minutes. After 45 days of storage at 4 ◦C, room temperature and 44 ◦C, vitamin C concentrations and viscosity values generally decreased, while pH remained relatively stable. All formulations demonstrated higher permeation compared to the control group, with the greatest permeation-enhancing effect observed in the 2% vitamin E formulation (Jss = 21.06 ± 2.17 µg/cm2/min; Kp = 5 ± 0.51 x 10-4 cm/min; ER = 1.749). The ring opening of epichlorohydrin by fatty acids using various catalysts are among the major routes for the derivation of multifunctional organic chemicals. Existing methods are marred by complexities. In this present study, we demonstrated the use of potassium carbonate suspension in methanol as a cheaper alternative for catalyzing this important reaction using stearic acid and epichlorohydrin as precursors. The synthesized product was characterized using FTIR, NMR, and computational methods, confirming the presence of key functional groups, including a C=O ester stretch, a pronounced C–Cl stretch and a strong C–O stretch. NMR results also supported these findings, with ¹³C NMR signals at δ 171.55 (C=O), 63.73 (CCH₂O), and 48.29 (CH₂Cl). The molecular weight (MW) of 376.27, total polar surface area (TPSA) of 46.53, Log P of 7.33, and Log S of - 8.52 suggest amphiphilic properties, indicating potential surfactant applications. Computational studies revealed a flexible molecular structure (nRot = 20) and a single stereocenter (nStereo = 1), further supporting its suitability for surfactant-related applications. Additionally, toxicity predictions suggested a low environmental risk profile, making the compound a promising candidate for industrial applications. DC, known by the local community in South Sumatra, Indonesia, as jambu nasi-nasi. This plant has been used to treat various diseases including hypertension, diabetes, joint pain, headaches, and fever. The use of plants as medicine is closely related to their secondary metabolite content. This research is an experimental study aimed at determining the antioxidant activity of fractions from the stem bark of S.zeylanicum and isolating and determining the chemical structure of its active compounds. The fractionation of the dry powder of S. zeylanicum stem bark was carried out using a gradient extraction method with solvents n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Each fraction was tested for antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The active antioxidant fractions were further isolated into pure compounds using chromatography techniques, and their chemical structures were identified through spectroscopy, including 1D and 2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The antioxidant activity test results (IC50) for each fraction, namely n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol, were 338.1: 114.1: and 88.71 µg/mL. The results of the separation of the ethyl acetate and methanol fractions using a chromatography column showed that the SE7 subfraction from the ethyl acetate fraction had the highest IC50, which is 83.25 µg/mL. The SE7 fraction was further separated by column chromatography until compound 1 was obtained as a white solid with an IC50 value of 62.22 µg/mL. Fermented foods are the first processed staple human diet that has been produced and consumed since the development of human civilizations. The production and consumption of a significant portion of fermented foods involve controlled microbial growth and enzymatic conversions of both major and minor food components. These processes elevate the value of fermented foods due to the enhancement of their organoleptic properties. This review begins with an introduction that underscores the historical significance and enduring relevance of lactic acid fermentation in the food industry. It then delves into the various types of lactic acid, namely L-(+)-lactic acid and D-(-)-lactic acid, elucidating their distinct chemical properties and roles in different fermentation processes. Current trends in the use of lactic acid in food fermentation are addressed, reflecting the growing consumer demand for natural, health-oriented, and plant-based fermented products. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the functional aspects of lactic acid in food fermentation. Entada africana is used locally as herbal decoction to treat fever, dysentery and stomach ache. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-ulcer properties of the methanol stembark extract of Entada africana (MEA). The anti-ulcer activity of MEA was evaluated at graded doses (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg), using ethanol-induced, indomethacin-induced and pylorus-ligated (PL) ulcer models on Wistar rats. The ulcer index was calculated and histological assessments were carried out on isolated rat stomachs. MEA was shown to be safe orally. The ethanol model showed dose-dependent and statistically significant (p<0.0001) gastroprotective effects at all doses, with the highest dose of MEA (400 mg/kg) having the highest percentage inhibition of 98.1%, while omeprazole was 80.5%. Similarly, in the indomethacin model, MEA exerted a significant gastroprotective effect at the highest dose with a percentage inhibition of 74.9% while the standard drug was 85.9%. Increases in acidity and volume of acid output were observed with the PL model in all groups when compared to the control, however not statistically significant. Histological evaluation revealed regenerating mucosa at 100 and 200 mg/kg in the ethanol-induced model while the indomethacin-induced model showed almost complete re-epithelisation at the optimum dose of 200 mg/kg.
