Such modelling has traditionally focused on water \u0000quantity. However, reduced water quality can also limit water resources, particularly for drinking \u0000water. The water availability model GWAVA has been further developed to include a water quality \u0000module. This module will initially focus on biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The module \u0000considers drivers of BOD loading from land, such as agriculture and urban runoff, and transport \u0000and loss of BOD through sewage treatment and river networks. In an exploratory assessment, \u0000GWAVA was used to produce maps of water scarcity across Europe. The new module enhanced \u0000those maps with effects of BOD on water resources. This enhancement increased the modelled \u0000proportion of Europe experiencing water scarcity, which indicates that it is important to include \u0000both water quantity and quality in model estimates of water scarcity.

Since those lakes are remote and hard to access, multisensoral remote sensing seems to be a valuable tool to generate hydrological relevant information as modelling input (land cover, trends in mountain lake ice cover, etc.) or validation base (lake level changes). Integrative methodological approaches linking state-of-the-art remote sensing with distributed hydrological modelling are the only way to quantify the water balance and to provide a forecast of the future water availability on the Tibetan Plateau.

The period of observation at each of the stations selected is at least 25 years, with an average of 42 years per station. The tests aimed at detecting trends in the central values of the discharges, as well as in their variation. Except for one region, the detected changes are of local extent, if any. A decline in the annual maximum discharges and in their variability is found for the Upper Jordan River and its tributaries. A general rise in the variability is found over most other regions. These appear to result from changes in the meteorological causes of high discharges. Few high discharges occurred in the 1970s and in the early 1980s, whilst many occurred in the 1990s.

Monte Carlo techniques are suited for this analysis but usually require a huge computational effort. An alternative and computationally efficient approach is the First Order Second Moment (FOSM) method which directly propagates the uncertainty originating from parameter uncertainty into the result. We apply the FOSM method to both the groundwater flow and solute transport equations. It is shown how calibration on the basis of measured heads and concentrations yield the Principle of Interdependent Uncertainty that correlates the uncertainties of feasible transmissivities and recharge rates. The method is used to compute the uncertainty of steady state heads and of steady state solute concentrations. The method is illustrated by application to the Palla Road aquifer in semiarid Botswana, for which the quantification of the uncertainty range of groundwater recharge is of prime interest. The uncertainty bounds obtained by the FOSM method correspond well with the results obtained by the Monte Carlo method. It is shown that at the planned abstraction rate the probability of exceeding the natural replenishment of the Palla Road aquifer by overpumping is 30%.
