Reduced advertising revenue has resulted in the media tending to prioritize financial survival over journalistic principles or ethics. This research aims to describe how journalists struggle to define journalistic practices amidst the pressure of commercialization, using Bourdieu's theoretical perspective. The method used is metajournalistic discourse, using metajournalistic documents in the form of scripts written by digital journalists who broadcast on Remotivi. Metajournalistic discourse is a textual analysis method that focuses on how journalists tell stories about their journalistic practices, and these stories are assumed to shape the journalistic arena they inhabit. The findings show that journalists experience a paradox in defining and carrying out journalistic practices that are considered ideal. On the one hand, journalists appear to carry out journalistic practices in a situation with a high degree of heteronomy. On the other hand, journalists also seek to develop resistance by maintaining or developing definitions of journalistic practices or norms that are close to the autonomy pole, for example, by defining their journalistic practice with the term \"journalistic jihad.” These idealized journalistic definitions or norms (which prioritize verification, accuracy, and adherence to journalistic firewalls) are shared and circulated through discourse texts to become resistance narratives.","PeriodicalId":365742,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kajian Jurnalisme","volume":"149 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140474039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interdependence between media and politics is an interesting discussion because it should be an institution that disseminates information neutrally, no tendency to certain groups. However, today’s media in Indonesia exacerbates the phenomenon of political mediatization. This study aims to provide new insights into how Tribunnews.com uses framing to shape political narratives in the context of news coverage of Kaesang Pangarep’s rise to the leadership of PSI party. This study combines qualitative methodology with the framing analysis method based on the theories of Gerald Kosicki and Zhongdang Pan. It examined the Tribunnews.com report, edition September 30th 2023 titled “Observer Suspects Megawati’s Anger over Kaesang Joining PSI”. Tribunnews.com was chosen because the news was only reviewed from the observer’s side. Hence, this research attempted to reveal how Kaesanng’s rise to the leadership of the PSI party was framed by Tribunnews.com. The results of the research based on the Zhongdang Pan and Kosicki model demonstrated that Tribunnews.com constructed Megawati’s alleged anger, yet the news was not followed with reliable sources for balanced reporting. Tribunnews.com also mediatized the use of bombastic titles and content to increase news appeal. This requires a public concern because the media, which should act as the fourth pillar of democracy, instead tend to mediatize the news only for attaining public attention.","PeriodicalId":365742,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kajian Jurnalisme","volume":"505 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140480046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 outbreak is a catastrophe that endangers and disrupts life, causes fatalities, traumatizes victims, and engenders a climate of threat and fear. The COVID-19 pandemic tragedy not only affected the number of sick and deceased individuals but also altered work schedules in the neighborhood. Additionally, COVID-19 has brought about changes in journalism, particularly in television journalism. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the mechanism governing the operational procedures of newsroom and television journalism during the COVID-19 pandemic. Expectancy Violation Theory and Judee K. Burgoon’s Interaction Adaptation Theory were both used in this study. This research approach employed a constructive subjective paradigm and utilized a qualitative case study methodology. The subjects of this study were the journalists and editors of iNews TV and Metro TV. The study’s finding show that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted how journalists work both in the workplace and in the field, causing disruption and changes to their routines. Nevertheless, the pandemic has also prompted an acceleration of the process of adapting how journalistic tasks are carried out, both in the newsroom and on the ground. Despite the acceleration, the COVID-19 epidemic has expedited the process of adaptation and adjustment. Finally, the transformation has resulted in new business strategies in the television industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic.","PeriodicalId":365742,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kajian Jurnalisme","volume":"341 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140471058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it still occurs in various online media, meaning that there is something wrong with the ethical actions of online media journalists. This research aims to reveal the ethical experiences of online media journalists in avoiding trial by the press. This research method uses a phenomenological approach by conducting interviews with five online media journalists and a literature study of regulatory trials by the press in Indonesia. The results show that trial by the press has been institutionally regulated to be avoided by journalists, especially in Law 40/1999, Journalistic Code of Ethics from the Press Council, PWI, and AJI. However, journalistic ethical principles in institutional regulations are no longer compatible with the working mechanisms of online media, thus creating a dilemma for online media journalists to choose between the two. However, online media journalists do not view institutional regulations and online media working mechanisms as dualism in the practice of online journalism. Their experience in elaborating institutional regulations and online media working mechanisms can minimize the occurrence of trials by the press. We concluded that contextual and situational elaboration of institutional regulations and working mechanisms of online media can produce an authentic meaning for journalists to avoid trial by the press in online media.","PeriodicalId":365742,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kajian Jurnalisme","volume":"195 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140479104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mass media pays particular attention to cases of conflict involving protected animals, especially if such conflicts result in fatal casualties, as seen in the case of Tasik Tebing Serai Village. This research aims to critically analyze the media discourse construction related to this conflict, which can influence public awareness, community attitudes, and even policy responses. The critical discourse analysis method by Teun van Dijk is employed to identify text structures, social cognition, and social contexts in the news published by national and local media, namely detik.com and riaupos.co, reporting on the conflict in Tasik Tebing Serai Village, Riau Province. The research findings indicate that despite mass media presenting factual information, they need to catch up in providing education, a fundamental principle of environmental journalism. Detik.com leans towards utilizing the \"rewrite\" method to increase its publication quantity, whereas riaupos.co focuses more on presenting diverse topics. Both media have their own dramatic and sensational characteristics in delivering the news by utilizing the word of choice to catch the reader's attention to the issue. This study delves into a deeper understanding of the importance of reporting environmental issues with environmental journalism principles to enhance public awareness, understanding, and responsibility regarding environmental problems.","PeriodicalId":365742,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kajian Jurnalisme","volume":"346 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140473367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also manifests in a digital humanitarian practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, categorized by the government as a non-natural disaster from 2020 to 2023. The spreading of misinformation and inaccurate data on cases of COVID-19 patients, have become an obstacle in the early stages of efforts to stop fatalities. As the government imposes lockdown and restrictions access to information, the news media as one of the key sources of information is under attack. Thus, citizen initiatives in stopping the pandemic are worth documented as a lesson learned when managing disasters in the future. By conducting qualitative method, this research describes the implementation of participatory journalism in practice related to the data gathering and reporting on COVID-19 cases in Indonesia by \"LaporCovid-19\" and \"KawalCOVID19\". This research finds both platforms carry out digital humanitarian practices while organizing citizens and producing, curating, and disseminating information. As the government imposes lockdown and restricted access toward media and journalists, the digital humanitarian practice involves citizens through decentralization, self-organization, volunteerism, and the optimization of digital platforms. Kompas.com, one of Indonesia's media with the most extensive readership, contributes significantly to public understanding and perception of the West Papua crisis. This study aims to examine how Kompas.com frames the West Papua crisis on 7-30 September 2021. Framing analysis examines three important aspects of news framing: crisis frames, thematic and episodic frames, and news sources. The news regarding the West Papua crisis on 7-30 September 2020 was only filled with three frames: conflict, attribution of responsibility, and human interest. Kompas.com has tried to provide space for parties with a moderate position in the conflict, such as the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI), Komnas HAM (National Commission on Human Rights), and Kontras (The Commission for Disappeared and Victims of Violence). However, in general, the news is still very much dominated by news sources from the Indonesian government and the military and not using enough thematic frames. Kompas.com needs to be more comprehensive to report on the crisis in West Papua during the reporting period of 7-30 September 2020. Kompas.com also does not elaborate that the Free Papua movement is plural and fragmentary, with a spectrum of violent movements to peace movements. Identity politics refers to the way politics works in determining and classifying identities. In its development, especially in the last few elections, identity politics is full of harmful content that divides various elements of society. This study aims to analyze the media framing raised in three perspectives of online media, namely, Mediaindonesia.com, Detik.com, and Kompas.com. This study used a qualitative method using Pan & Kosicki’s framing theory. The study results show that Mediaindonesia.com's news content aims to provide normative justification while safeguarding the integrity of the NasDem party as a \"movement for change.\" It is achieved by countering any negative and intolerant stigmas associated with identity politics issues related to the party's endorsed presidential candidate. In contrast, Detik.com is more direct in identifying social polarization categories about identity politics, highlighting the disparities between opposing views through carefully selected source quotes and rhetorical devices. Meanwhile, Kompas.com tends to take a more neutral stance, prioritizing the electability of candidates and navigating the balance between tolerance and intolerance. Framing analysis allows readers to maintain a critical perspective and comprehend how the media presents an issue in order to accomplish specific goals.","PeriodicalId":365742,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kajian Jurnalisme","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127608840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
