Considering the factor of time and attempting to simulate human behavior, a time-delay neural network is used to determine the traffic status through traffic lanes. The acquired frames are divided into a number of blocks based on number of lanes and road boundary coordinates, which are obtained automatically by a part of the system called the road boundary detection system. Two extracted principal features from each block of a lane which are vehicle detector and movement detector will form the input vector of the neural network. The neural network classifies each lane into a level of traffic congestion. The neural network was previously trained with various traffic and different lighting conditions. Finally a description of traffic scene is obtained using descriptions of all lanes.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The pure-ALOHA, slotted-ALOHA, and non-persistent CSMA schemes are simulated. The results of simulation show that the non-persistent CSMA is superior to the ALOHA schemes. This superiority becomes stronger with increasing communicating vehicle density. Also, it is shown quantitatively that setting the range of carrier sensing to twice the communication range can reduce the ratio of hidden stations that have a bad influence on the performance of the non-persistent CSMA scheme. In addition, the capture ratio in the IVC is considered in the simulations, and the influence of the capture effect on the performance of each scheme is discussed.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Each object close to the own car should be modeled and tracked using a specific individual dynamic model. The object classification is based on the geometric outlines and the dynamic behavior. For any sensor combinations usable to detect the environment, the velocity of the objects can be measured relatively to the movement of own vehicle. To. get the absolute velocity of the objects, the motion of the own vehicle must be measured for which the well know bicycle model is used. This ego-model is fed by sensor signals provided anyway by ABS, ASR or ESP. To eliminate the own motion from the object measurements, several coordinate transformations are required in the different stages of data processing. A proposal is given on how to solve this problem when using a laser range finder as a sensing device. Moreover, a simple object model is introduced for this task in order to save processing power. The algorithms can extended towards a multihypothesis approach which will result a more robust classification and tracking algorithm.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. We seek low cost routes that cover the maximum population while satisfying budget constraints introduced by the need to retrofit bridges on the critical routes. The MCNDP seeks the subnetwork that minimizes the total routing cost and maximizes the total demand covered for a pre-determined set of origin-destination (O-D) pairs subject to budget constraints. An integer programming formulation of the MCNDP is presented. It is applied to an earthquake management problem in southwestern Indiana. Insights on the model are illustrated by evaluating the tradeoffs between the two objectives over a range of budget values.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. They are capital intensive, prone to failures and require management of the communication network. In the present work, we propose a self sustaining traffic management system which is inherently distributed in nature. The approach incorporates intelligent vehicles and roadside beacons, with limited communication for congestion control. A compartmental model is used to study the behaviour of the system. It is shown that the approach is effective in mitigating the congestion on the road in a network large or small, if alternate paths to divert the traffic are available. The method can be easily used with an existing signalling arrangement and if required with a centralized congestion control system.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The basic idea is that dynamic speed limits con create traffic conditions where shock waves can damp out faster. The control objective is to minimize the total time that vehicles spend in the network. For the prediction of the evolution of the traffic flows in the network we use an adapted version of the METANET model that takes the variable speed limits into account. The coordinated control results in a network with less congestion, a higher outflow, and a lower total time spent. In addition, the receding horizon approach of MPC results in an adaptive, online control strategy that automatically takes changes in the system parameters into account.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Hence, visibility of the on-board display should be more excellent than the ordinary display. This report describes an appropriate method for displaying characters and symbols with an automotive display. Under the condition of a constant surrounding illuminance, the visibility of characters and symbols depends on the character complexity and the viewing distance. In this method, the character complexity is represented by the two dimensional frequency (linear density), which is associated with the driver's visual acuity and the viewing distance. Then, the appropriate character size is determined based on the spatial frequency properties. Experiments show that this method was very effective on improving the display visibility.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In recent decades of years, hundreds; of Chinese cities have made public transportation system planning. Some of them even have made the public transportation operation and scheduling optimization. The practice of these cities made it clear that an integrated decision support system for urban public transportation planning and operation is in great of need. This paper brings forward an integrated systematic frame for the needs of Chinese city public transportation planning and operation, and it also makes the structural design for the public transportation database of the integrated system. The system will be of great benefit to improve the public transportation planning and operational level and accelerate the development of public transportation.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The VICS (vehicle information and communication system) which is one of the intelligent transport systems, has been developed to release the traffic jam. The VICS is able to give real-time global information to drivers and help drivers to find the fastest route. However, a spatial oscillation of traffic jam will happen, known as hunting phenomena. On the other hand, IVC (inter vehicle communication) is a developing technology which enables cars to give and receive various information by optical communication, millimeter electromagnetic waves and so on. We first investigate the relationship between hunting phenomena and the VICS user ratio, and then realize an effective transport system, in which each car selects a different route and communicate with others by IVC.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
