A concurrent mixed-methods design was adopted for the research. The quantitative study comprised a total sample of 228 respondents, and face-to-face interviews were conducted with 20 key informants. The primary researcher administered a self-developed instrument with 167 items to the respondents, and made a discussion guide available to them in both English and Amharic. The methods of data analysis included various multivariate analysis methods and a structural equation analysis. A thematic content analysis was done to identify the themes emerging from the qualitative data. The direct influence of the independent variable of leadership roles and tasks on the optimal institutionalisation of an RBPMM culture was positive but not significant. Indirectly, this variable significantly influenced the indicator variables of the optimal institutionalisation of an RBPMM culture through the mediating variables of leading and managing for an institutionalised RBPMM culture. The adoption of performance measurement information for control and compliance purposes was evident in the Managing Environmental Resources to Enable Transition (MERET) programme, but its implementation to optimise decision-making, accountability and transparency was not evident. These results were confirmed by triangulating the qualitative findings with the quantitative results. The limitation of the study was that it focused on a specific region and a public service project in Ethiopia within a specific time frame and context. Therefore the study may not be representative of similar programmes in the private sector. Also, it was not a longitudinal study that tracked changes over time. The study contributes to scholarly discourse and the existing body of knowledge by presenting a leadership model that drives and optimally institutionalises an RBPMM culture in agricultural development programmes in Ethiopia. This model could be implemented in other developing economies as well. The mediating variables can be adopted by policy-makers and organisational practitioners for the optimisation of the institutionalisation of an RBPMM culture.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"280 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123374091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This change is linked to the rapid removal of barriers to trade, such as geographical distance and government regulations, in a bid to facilitate the diffusion of technology and the mobility of goods, labour and, more importantly, financial capital across borders. Among other factors, the transformation of the labour market in the form of re-organisation, re-engineering, intensification of work, multi-tasking, outsourcing, privatisation, increased use of temporary workers, and restructuring, has heightened the sense of job insecurity among workers. This study examines the transformation of the labour market in the context of neoliberal globalisation. The methodological approach adopted was desktop research in the form of conducting a literature survey within an interpretative research paradigm. The study argues that the transformation of the labour market has not only impacted on the workplace but has subsequently also had adverse effects on public health in the African continent. The study further demonstrates that women, compared to men, are disproportionately affected by the adverse health effects emanating from this transformation. The study concludes that the transformation of the labour market, within the context of the phenomenon of neoliberal globalisation, affects public health and exacerbates poverty and inequality in society in so far as health outcomes are concerned, given the insufficiency and absence of effective social protection mechanisms and efficient service delivery in Africa.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134443720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is exacerbated by high unemployment and uncertainty in the labour market. The South African government appears to be trying to implement a range of strategies and approaches to try and assist unemployed graduates. However, the onus is also on the graduate to look for ways in dealing with the uncertain labour market. The purpose of this research was to investigate the labour market transition and experiences of unemployed graduates within the context of high unemployment in South Africa. The research utilised an interpretivist philosophy hinging on the qualitative approach, and it used an exploratory research design. Further, a longitudinal technique was employed, tracing over a period of two years the labour market experiences and transitions of a sample of 30 graduates who had been enrolled at a historically disadvantaged higher education institution in South Africa. Data was collected from focus group discussions and unstructured individual interviews over this two-year period. The findings obtained through structural narrative analysis revealed that the labour market transition and experiences of the unemployed graduates were not negative only; some of the graduates had used their own resourceful techniques to deal with challenges. Based on the findings of the research and in view of the uncertain labour market, suggestions were made that would have resonance for not only individuals but also policymakers, career counsellors and institutions of higher learning.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126959080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopted a qualitative approach, and eight experts in the field were purposefully sampled and interviewed. The results suggested that small-enterprise owners were not knowledgeable about labour laws, hence their inability to comply with them. It was found that owners experienced labour laws as cumbersome, and their forced implementation had a negative impact on governance. It is suggested that different legal requirements be applied to the small-enterprise sector. Guidelines are proposed which legislators could use to assist the South African government in modifying the requirements of the LRA and the BCEA in respect of small enterprises. This study fills a gap in existing literature on small enterprises and governance in South Africa in the field of employment relations.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129134945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the aim of addressing these issues, this article investigates the relationship between total rewards, job satisfaction and organisational commitment in higher education institutions in South Africa. A survey design was used in the study that was conducted. The systematic sampling technique was used to obtain the sample (N = 279) from two universities of technology. The measuring instruments used were the Total Rewards Questionnaire based on the World at Work Total Rewards Model, the Job Satisfaction Survey and the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire. Using the SPSS 24 and AMOS 24 software programs, structural equation modelling (SEM) was performed to analyse the data set. The results revealed that some elements of total rewards had a strong relationship with job satisfaction and organisational commitment among academic staff. The contribution of this study was to enhance the comprehension of existing literature on the relationship between the predictor variables (total rewards elements), job satisfaction and organisational commitment. The findings provided evidence that total rewards played a major role in influencing both job satisfaction and organisational commitment in higher education institutions. Therefore, the rewards specialists in universities of technology could apply a total rewards system to maintain, or even promote, academics’ job satisfaction and organisational commitment. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114911761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current research explored the interplay between career adaptability and psychosocial career preoccupations to explain the variance in levels of career satisfaction. Data were collected from a random sample (N = 576) of professional women in scarce skills fields in the South African organisational context. Hierarchical moderated regression analysis indicated that individuals with high career adaptability and low career establishment and work/life adjustment preoccupations exhibited relatively higher levels of career satisfaction than those with high preoccupations. The study concluded that individuals’ career preoccupations negatively moderated the positive link between their career adaptability resources and career satisfaction. Career discussions should address the career development concerns of professional women in order to enhance their career satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128415104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There have been considerable and ongoing socio-political changes, resulting from new government regulations. Most organisations have experienced some type of downturn, whether due to external business factors or poor internal performance. A typical response to organisational decline is retrenchment. Our study sought to explore employees’ perceptions of the effects of retrenchment on job stress and organisational commitment in a mining company. The study was located within a quantitative research paradigm. Four research hypotheses were posited and data was collected in one region from a sample of 400 surface mining employees, including management, administrators, engineers and artisans. The results showed that the effects of retrenchment did not have a negative impact on job stress (time stress and anxiety). This may be due to the fact that the mining company in question had a planning and consultation process in place for the employees prior to the retrenchment process. The results also showed that job stress (time stress and anxiety) was negatively associated with organisational commitment. To conclude this article we discuss the implications of our findings, outline the limitations of our study and make recommendations for future research.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121436769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A high-quality relationship is essential, considering the work-family spillovers employees experience. Limited research has been conducted on the potential positive and negative consequences of the leader-member exchange (LMX) dyadic relationship. In this study, we used a cross-sectional research design, and drew an employee sample (N = 120) from a commuter transport engineering company. A five-point Likert scale was employed and statistical analyses were carried out using the SAS statistical program. We calculated Pearson correlation coefficients and used structural equation modelling to test the proposed conceptual model to indicate possible correlations between the different variables. The main finding of the study was that the nature of the LMX relationship quality in the relevant company appeared to be high and positively related to work-home enrichment but negatively related to work-home conflict and role overload. The article concludes by making a number of suggestions to respond to challenges.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126592242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Engagement has been identified as an emerging theme that is successful in increasing profitability by creating a workforce that is more dedicated and actively present. Within the service and retail industries, engagement levers can be used as a mechanism for enhancing levels of customer service, their primary communication channel with customers. The question of how to maximise engagement within this core frontline, often semi-skilled, workforce is therefore crucial, and it cannot necessarily be approached in the same way as a white-collar, highly educated workforce. A qualitative, inductive and exploratory approach was taken to understand what impacted on and influenced engagement in this setting. Nominal group interviews were held within a South African retail environment, and the responses of 54 participants were captured. Qualitative and quantitative metrics were extrapolated and analysed to add to the understanding of the topic. The key findings revealed that the role the customer played in generating staff engagement was a key lever in a frontline environment, a link not made by existing literature on engagement. The study proposes a Frontline Service Engagement model that provides insight into the complexities of engagement in an African context, and, compared to an international context, helps understand the difference in approach required. Through understanding the complexity of the influences that contribute to this new lever, a strategy to address engagement can be improved to equip managers to increase profitability even in difficult economic times.","PeriodicalId":365680,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Employee Relations (Formerly South African Journal of Labour Relations)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115383239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
