The protocol uses a combination of preventive and corrective measures for maintaining consistency. On recognizing that a transaction has read inconsistent data, the Protocol applies a corrective measure which requires the transaction to re-read some data. Alternatively, on recognizing that a transaction is about to write data which will result in inconsistency, the Protocol applies a preventive measure which delays the Write. A Read request is always granted without delay. The Protocol is deadlock-free, requires no backup data, and supports a greater degree of concurrency than Two Phase Locking. A transaction is never aborted or delayed indefinitely by the Protocol.","PeriodicalId":365511,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE First International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116151376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patterns may be constructed by entering conditions into electronic form templates and also by combining other patterns. Patterns form the basis of a language for database access. Requirements of language for office workers to access a database are outlined. We present a formal description of the Forms Pattern Language and illustrate how this language can be used to interactively formulate database requests and browse through the database contents. The Forms Pattern Language is evaluated with respect to the language requirements of office workers. A linear. keyword-oriented version and a pictorial version of the Forms Pattern Language are also presented.","PeriodicalId":365511,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE First International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134293749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach distinguishes between modeling incompletely known worlds and modeling changes in these worlds. As an alternative to the open and closed world assumptions, we propose the modified closed world assumption. Along with the discussion of updating, we address some issues of refining incompletely specified information.","PeriodicalId":365511,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE First International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129278795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The semantic relation is attached to a conventional relation in terms of a join operation every time a flexible interpretation of queries, accepting a certain amount of ambiguity in query conditions, is required. In order to overcome performance degradation caused by the additional join operation, the authors present an algorithm for parallel execution of a join operation assuming an architecture composed of one master unit and n slave units which are linked to each other. Here, relations are distributed to n slave units by means of hash. According to the static analysis of performances, it is expected that the execution efficiency of a join operation is improved by the extent of o(n) and o(n2) compared with the cases of a single processor using hash for restricting source-target pairs of the subrelations, and that not using hash, respectively. Further investigation, however, is needed in a dynamic environment.","PeriodicalId":365511,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE First International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115393212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a new data structure called predicate trees for clustering tuples of a relation in a way that allows the system to accelerate a large number of multi-dimensional queries. The directories used for the implementation of predicate trees in SABRE are organized as relations which are searched efficiently by filters. One of the most significant advantages of predicate trees is the possibility of defining logical addresses based on content, called signatures, and to use filters to manage directories.","PeriodicalId":365511,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE First International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116525548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Engineering data comprise attributes, structural and pictorial information. ADAM uses the relational model as a basis for representing attributes information and structures of engineering data. As for pictorial information, ADAM data definition language provides figure specification parts where pictorial notations of instances are represented in terms of functions in computer graphics. In this paper, we observe engineering data and give some considerations on them. Four essential features of engineering data are discussed. Data definition and manipulation facilities of ADAM are presented. Instances with arguments are introduced for managing complex structures of engineering data and repeated appearances of similar objects. A graphic algorithm is discussed, which allows users to retrieve pictures in any intended details.","PeriodicalId":365511,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE First International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128450068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experience with the 5ESS1\" switching system development at Bell Laboratories showed that simultaneous gains in productivity and quality were made by improving the methodology and the environment surrounding the development. This paper describes the key aspects of the management approach and the development methodology that directly contributed to those improvements in the software quality and project productivity. In addition, efforts for further improvements, including the implementation of productivity and quality circles, data and metric analysis, etc., are discussed. Although these experiences resulted from the development of a very large project, the basic ideas and techniques can still be applied to most software projects involving more than a small group of programmers.","PeriodicalId":365511,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE First International Conference on Data Engineering","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125321781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
