Multi-criteria decision analysis is combined with Geographic Information Systems to produce a mapping of flood hazard areas. The weighting for each parameter is based on six criteria: rainfall, slope gradient, topography, soil type, land cover, and distance from rivers. The flood hazard map is validated using inundation data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency for the years 2015 and 2020. From the general analysis, it can be determined that the parameter most influencing floods is rainfall with a weight of 0.270, followed by slope gradient at 0.164, topography at 0.124, soil type at 0.096, land cover at 0.190, and distance from rivers at 0.155. Therefore, through mapping using QGIS, it is revealed that in 2002, highly flood hazard areas comprised 20.99% of the total Ciliwung Watershed area, which increased to 24.31% in 2020. The validation of the flood hazard map was conducted by recording the coordinate points of flood incidents in 2015 and 2020, revealing that the affected areas within the Ciliwung Watershed occurred in high to very high vulnerability zones. This research demonstrates that flood events in the study area occurred in high to very high flood hazard zones. This study analyzed farmers’ perception of area closure and its associated factors of participation in degraded grazing land restoration in Sede-Muja Woreda, Northwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional research design and a mixed research approach were applied in this study. The 384 sample respondents were randomly selected. Household surveys, interviews, focus groups, and field study techniques were used to acquire the data. A binary logistic regression model was used to identify the determinant elements that affect farmers' participation in the area closure of degraded grazing land restoration.  All of the total respondent farmers (100%) have a positive attitude towards multi-functionality benefits of area closures for local farmers. The model results show that the grazing experience (AOR = 2.981,95% CI = (1.143-7.775), access to safety net program (AOR = 2.787,95% CI = (1.146-6.77), access to livestock forage (AOR = 4.493,95% CI = (1.149-14.028), access to extension service (AOR = 2.522,95% CI = (1.917-6.6397), livestock ownership (AOR = 0.026,95% CI = (0.008-0.087), improved cattle breeds (AOR = 4.955,95% CI = (1.944-12.630), access to training (AOR = 3.169,95% CI = (1.409-7.131), farmers’ perception (AOR = 0.085,95%CL = (0.023-0.310), and communities’ consensus (AOR = 4.230, 95% CI = (1.377-12.996) were determinant factors that affect farmers' participation in the area closure of degraded grazing land restoration. To address the current grazing land degradation issues, every one of the relevant authorities as well as communities needs to work together to create modern grazing land management mechanisms such as grazing land enclosures, reduce animal size through improved cattle breeds, implement zero-grazing systems, and ensure the sustainability of existing enclosures.","PeriodicalId":36513,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Degraded and Mining Lands Management","volume":"33 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141702656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Heavy metals can adversely affect the physicochemical properties of soil and plant health. Prolonged exposure to heavy metals in humans can lead to both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects. The present research intended to determine the dispersion condition of toxic metals on cropland and assess the attendant environmental and health dangers in the Wonosobo Regency. This study used a soil sample survey encompassing 312 soil sampling sites. The completed analyses comprise geographical analysis, index of geo-accumulation (IG), contamination index (CI), Nemerow comprehensive contamination index (NCCI), risk analysis, and health risk analysis. The research findings reveal that cadmium material is the primary contributor to contamination from heavy metals in farmland in Wonosobo Regency, as shown by IG analysis. The CI and environmental hazards assessments suggest considerable pollution levels. During the last three decades, there has been an acceleration of LULC changes in Eastern DR Congo. However, there is no comprehensive overview of the drivers of these changes at the territorial level in this region, even though the knowledge of these drivers is important for land use planning and spatial modeling of environmental changes. Using the Kalehe Territory as a case study, this work sought to fill this gap by analyzing the drivers of LULC changes during the 1987-2020 period. A mixed approach combining remote sensing, Geographic Information System, and logistic regression modeling was used. The results indicated that the prominent LULC changes in the study area are deforestation, built-up area expansion, cropland expansion, and shrubland expansion. These changes are significantly influenced by biophysical factors (slope, altitude, and soil type), conservation zoning, population dynamics, and accessibility factors at different levels. The occurrence of conservation zones decreases the susceptibility to deforestation, built-up land, and cropland expansions. In contrast, the proximity factors (distance to road, artisanal mining, and locality) increase the susceptibility to LULC changes. These factors can be integrated into spatial models to forecast LULC changes susceptibility in this region. Some people in Pasirkoja use shallow groundwater for washing and bathing, and some for cooking. Pollutants very easily pollute shallow groundwater, and nitrate is one of the pollutants found in shallow groundwater in residential areas. The water quality status was determined using the pollution index (PI) method based on a Decree of the Minister of Environment Number 115 of 2003 and the nitrate pollution index (NPI) to ascertain the shallow groundwater quality in Pasirkoja of Bandung City, Indonesia. The variables used in the PI method were pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), nitrate, and nitrite, while the NPI method used the nitrate parameter. Shallow groundwater samples were taken during the rainy season and dry season. Based on the PI method, the results showed that the quality status of shallow groundwater at the research location is mostly lightly polluted in the rainy and dry seasons. Meanwhile, based on the NPI method, most are clean (not polluted). Differences in the quality status of shallow groundwater depend on the environmental conditions around which shallow groundwater samples were taken. It has created challenges for their recovery. In this context, soil amendments could play a crucial role in plant establishment in post-mining soils. The study aimed to analyze the effects of two amendments on the early plant survival and growth of seven species in the reclamation of severely degraded lands by gold mining in the Southeastern Peruvian Amazon. The study was based on a completely randomized block design, including 2-amendment treatments (T1: sawdust + island guano manure and T2: T1 + organic soil + hydrogel) and a control. The plant survivorship, height growth, diameter growth, and biomass accumulation were measured. This study found that amendments may be effective at increasing survivorship and plant growth in degraded lands by gold mining in the Peruvian Amazon. The amendments increased the survival, diameter, height, and biomass of most plant species in the study. In general, survivorship and plant growth in T2 were high compared to T1. At the end of the experiment, the highest survivorship was for an Indigofera suffruticosa and Crotalaria pallida (>80%). The diameter growth was higher in T2 than in T1. The species growing fastest in diameter (>1.5 cm) were Crotalaria cajanifolia, C. pallida and Ochroma pyramidale. Soil amendments provided similar effects on height for most species except for I. suffruticosa. Excessive exploitation activities can cause groundwater problems such as seawater intrusion, especially in coastal areas. Groundwater salination must be a concern and measured to determine the condition and level of distribution. One of the non-invasive, inexpensive, and efficient methods to see seawater intrusion phenomena is the vertical electrical sounding (VES) technique of electrical resistivity method. This research aimed to analyze the distribution of seawater intrusion in Pelauw Village, Maluku, Indonesia, using the VES and Dar-Zarrouk parameters S and T. The S and T are longitudinal conductance and transversal resistance, respectively. This study collected 16 VES stations spread across residential areas near the coast of Pelauw Village. Groundwater affected by seawater intrusion in the study area has S>1.00 mho and T<1,000 ohm m2. Three VES stations are suspected to have experienced seawater intrusion, namely V7, V8 and V12. These three stations are located near the shoreline and densely populated areas. Based on the 2D cross-section, the spread of seawater intrusion toward the land is about 200 meters. This seawater intrusion event is thought to have occurred due to groundwater exploitation by communities around the coast and active tectonic activity. The detection of land degradation is carried out to identify desertification processes using machine learning techniques in different geographical locations, which are always a challenging issue in the global field. Due to the significance of the detection of land degradation, this article provides an exhaustive review of the detection of land degradation using machine learning algorithms. Initially, the current status of land degradation in India is presented, along with a brief discussion on the overview of widely used factors, evaluation parameters, and algorithms used. Consequently, merits and demerits related to machine learning-based land degradation identification are presented. Additionally, solutions are prescribed in order to reduce existing problems in the detection of land degradation. Since one of the major objectives is to explore the future perspectives of machine learning-based land degradation detection, areas including the application of remote sensing, mapping, optimum features, and algorithms have been broadly discussed. Finally, based on a critical evaluation of existing related studies, the architecture of the machine learning-based desertification process has been proposed. When mining activities end and leave the area bare, rehabilitation and revegetation are required to minimize the impacts of mining in general. By fixing carbon in tree biomass, these interventions have a positive effect on increasing carbon storage. Measuring carbon stock is essential to evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions. This study was conducted in an inactive mining area in Marinduque, Philippines. Plots for sampling were created in areas that were not yet undergoing rehabilitation as well as those that were. The above-ground carbon stock and biomass were estimated using the allometric equation provided by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and Sourcebook for Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry Projects as references, respectively. The results for areas undergoing rehabilitation and those that were not indicated 4.297 t/ha and 0.0509 t/ha, respectively. The former has an above-ground carbon stock of 2.1485 t/ha, and the latter has 0.2545 t/ha. This shows a successful increase in biomass and carbon stock in the area undergoing rehabilitation. This comparison suggests that rehabilitation and revegetation should be implemented in mining areas to help mitigate the impacts of mining while also sequestering carbon. Besides providing economic benefits, agroforestry can also have ecological impacts, such as improving soil structure, reducing erosion, and other environmental services. There is a complex interaction between trees, soil, and crops in agroforestry systems, making modeling a valuable approach to unraveling these processes. We utilized the spatial and temporal explicit model WaNuLCAS to (i) evaluate the model's performance in depicting actual events (through coffee production and soil water content), (ii) assess the dynamic processes influencing coffee production and the environmental impact of management patterns, (iii) formulate and simulate optimal scenarios for coffee production optimization. Data from a one-year period involving five agroforestry management patterns for coffee-pine in UB Forest were used as input for the model. The model validation results showed satisfactory and acceptable outcomes for coffee production and groundwater dynamics. WaNuLCAS simulation results indicated that pruning and thinning management are crucial factors in increasing coffee production and are related to creating optimal conditions for coffee plants (light, humidity, and inter-plant competition). Additionally, fertilization management can be combined as a supporting factor to meet the nutritional needs of coffee plants. WaNuLCAS simulation results also suggested that pruning and thinning can improve soil physical properties, but thinning increases surface runoff within the system.
