Perhaps, most of the studies assumed single stage crossing and had to overlook additional factors for estimating occupancy time. The present study examines occupancy time under two-stage crossing under the influence of roadway and traffic attributes. Field data for this study are collected at five different isolated intersections. The analysis of field data is performed by observing the movements of individual vehicles from the minor road approach by considering various factors affecting it under mixed traffic conditions. And it was observed that Two-wheelers are tended to encroach into smaller gaps in between the vehicles due to its physical dimension and easy maneuvering followed by threewheelers. The occupancy time is observed had strong correlation with conflicting area, conflicting flow the proportion of U-turning major road traffic, vehicle dimension, and the increase of median width.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81666701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the safe disposal of PET waste is an environmental challenge. The present study investigates the feasibility of using PET resin prepared through glycolysis in polypropylene glycol (20:80 and 30:70 PET-to-glycol ratios) as a replacement for cement (5%, 10%, and 15%) in cement mortar. The effect of PET resin with melamine-formaldehyde as a hardener replacement on the consistency, setting time, soundness, compressive strength, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance was experimentally studied at two different curing conditions viz. under water curing and oven-dry curing. Findings of the present investigation infer that the compressive, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance improves upon oven-dry curing. The study concludes that the use of PET resins improves the attributes of cement mortar and at the same time provides an environmentally friendly way to dispose of the PET waste.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88204948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are not designed to eliminate CECs properly because the treatment technologies are not enough to remove these contaminants, which generates environmental and technological challenges. In this review, the sources of CEC contaminants to aquatic environments have been discussed in detail. Understanding the occurrences and pathways of CECs, their adverse effects on the environment, and removal techniques is a valuable key for the proper maintenance of global ecological health. This scenario was more explored through the harmful impacts of CECs on the environment, including their toxic effects and permissible limits. This review gathers information about CECs occurrences from a global perspective compiling information about their ecotoxicological effects, conventional and advanced treatment methods towards their mitigation. Advanced hybrid treatment techniques such as membrane bioreactor with ozonation, reverse osmosis, and ultrafiltration have shown to be a promising alternative for CECs removal. New advanced oxidation processes with assisted and non-assisted UVC/H2O2 systems with TiO2 photocatalysis were also demonstrated as a good approach to be implemented in the CECs mitigation strategies.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"82 2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78277755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many techniques for reducing vibration based on design or on control. Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have a double-saliency structure, which results in a radial pulsation force. Consequently, they cause vibration and acoustic noise. This paper investigates the correlation between the radial force and the skew angle of the stator and/or rotor circuits. The analysis is computed from two-dimensional (2D) transient magnetic finite-element analysis (FEA) of three machine topologies, namely the 12/8 three-phase SRM, the 6/4 three-phase SRM and the 8/6 four-phase SRM. Compared to SRM, these topologies have the same basic dimensions (stator outer diameter, rotor outer diameter, and length) and operate in the same magnetic circuit saturation. The flux linkage and torque characteristics of the different motors are presented. The radial force distributed on the stator yoke under various skewing angles is studied extensively by FEA for the three machines. It is also demonstrated the effect of skewing angles in the reduction of radial force without any reduction in torque production.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88020626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They play a vital role in the social and environmental sustainability of that place. This paper aims to identify the significance of courtyards in composite climate by analyzing the associated space, function, courtyard configuration, and socio-cultural connections. Accordingly, eight courtyard houses of Lucknow and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh, India) were selected for analysis based on their heritage value (in terms of age) and placement in the courtyard. Drawings of these houses were prepared through a site survey. Illumination data in the courtyard and adjacent spaces was measured through a lux meter. Various parameters of the courtyard, such as placement, size (length, breadth, and height), and connection to adjacent spaces, were analyzed through the above-collected data. The analysis concluded that the courtyard houses with NS orientation with significant height have good thermal comfort and daylight in the adjacent spaces.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"82 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74928063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using EVs helps reduce CO2 emissions and the use of fossil fuels and motivates the nations toward a more sustainable future where the consumed energy matters. EVs are the main part of E-mobility; therefore, the EV integration problem is very important. This paper discusses the importance of EV integration in smart grids, and challenges toward the electrification of future cars are investigated. The two main categories for challenges are security and utility-related challenges. Security challenges deal with the communication means in the e-mobility, while grid-related challenges correspond to the energy that must be supplied and delivered to the vehicles. Security challenges come from the devastating actions from outside threats such as hacks, but the grid-related challenges come from the system's nature and can be dealt with using physical and software-based methods. While the challenges of security and grid are investigated, since our future work focuses on energy and cost optimization, the solution of grid-related challenges will be covered.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"92 1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89853448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even if these branches are different in many ways, they also have similarities, especially in the technical and service sectors. Quite a few technological innovations were first used in aircraft, and, after a few years, those innovations received their own applications in automotive engineering. Because of rapid technical development, it is important to determine what knowledge and skills will be needed in the future. This information also predicts the main directions for the education of future mechanics. The main focus of our study was to get respondents (N=81) – experts in the field – to consider their professional competencies from various views and in different time periods, according to the Janus Cones method. Our survey describes future professional competencies that will be necessary for successful working in aircraft technology and automotive engineering.\u0000The result of the study is that skills and knowledge need to be used widely, creatively and combined with thinking to produce a new type of knowledge for competence in a certain context. A thematic content analysis led to the components of professional competencies for aircraft technology and automotive engineering being subsumed under five common categories: vehicle technology and proficiency, quality and environment, safety and security, general skills and knowledge, and customer service. Four of these competencies are clearly context bound to aviation and automotive engineering; however, they might also be usable in other technological branches and various study programmes. General skills and knowledge were the only components that referred to general competencies. The results of this study are intended to help with planning curricula that will meet the needs of the next generation of aviation and automotive engineers.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"49 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87947116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Identifying and highlighting humans by eliminating shadows from the video frames is vital for prudence motive. In this paper, a three-step procedure is proposed, which includes motion detection by background subtraction in live video frames, morphological gradient-based shadow removal, and human detection by Hybrid Feature Set (HFS), which comprises Histogram Oriented Gradient (HOG) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) with adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy inference system. The first step incorporates static background subtraction and dynamic background subtraction. The second step is to remove shadows by using a morphological gradient with the horizontal directional mask. The third step includes near-field, mid-field, and far-field human detection by using an adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy inference system. The width of the approach is one of the most important factors for the evaluation of saturation flow. But, in countries like India, due to the increase in commercial and social land usage, especially on roadsides, there are many factors that affect road width performance, among which side friction is one of the most important factors. In the present research study, an attempt is made to find the impact of side friction on saturation flow at signalized intersections in mixed traffic conditions. For this purpose, the data was collected from four different cities: Hyderabad, Hanmakonda, Raipur and Calicut. A multiple linear regression model is developed for estimating saturation flow in the present study. In addition to the saturation flow model, the present work provides adjustment factors for side friction to calculate saturation flow.","PeriodicalId":36339,"journal":{"name":"U.Porto Journal of Engineering","volume":"169 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78017789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
