The use of machine learning models is often essential to make simulation-optimization computational feasible. Tools from machine learning can be used to construct data-driven and often physics-free approximations of the numerical model response, with computational times often several orders of magnitude smaller than those required by reservoir numerical models. In this short perspective, we explain the background and current status of machine learning based combined simulation-optimization in geothermal reservoir management, and discuss several key issues that will likely form future directions","PeriodicalId":36335,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Geo-Energy Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":8.2,"publicationDate":"2022-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42807866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, based on the geological anatomy of oil and gas reservoirs, a new discriminatory criterion and evaluation method for effective reservoirs is proposed in combination with the analysis of reservoir formation dynamics mechanism. The results show that the hydrocarbon properties of the reservoir vary with the ratio of the capillary force between the sandstone reservoir and its surrounding rock. The effective reservoir is discriminated and the reservoir quality is evaluated based on the capillary force and depth of the surrounding media and the sandstone reservoir for adjacent plates. When the capillary force ratio is greater than 0.6, fewer effective reservoirs are developed. The effective reservoir is determined by the capillary force ratio of the sandstone reservoir and the surrounding rock medium to mechanically explain the geological phenomenon that low-porosity reservoirs can also accumulate hydrocarbons. Our findings have significant guiding value for Paleogene oil and gas exploration in the Zhu I depression of Pearl River Mouth Basin.","PeriodicalId":36335,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Geo-Energy Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":8.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47658306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Permeability of digital rocks can be estimated by pore-scale simulations using the Stokes equation, but the computational cost can be extremely high due to the complicated pore geometry and the large number of voxels. In this study, a novel method is proposed to simplify the three-dimensional pore-scale simulation to multiple decoupled two-dimensional ones, and each two-dimensional simulation provides the velocity distribution over a slice. By this decoupled simulation approach, the expensive simulation based on the Stokes equation is conducted only on two-dimensional domains, and the final three-dimensional simulation of Darcy equation using the finite difference method is very cheap. The proposed method is validated by both sandstone and carbonate rock samples and shows significant enhancement in the computational speed. This work sheds light on large-scale microscopic fluid flow based on digital rocks.","PeriodicalId":36335,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Geo-Energy Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":8.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48726998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
