{"title":"The Burden of Legacy","authors":"K. K. Kailash","doi":"10.4000/15aff","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4000/15aff","url":null,"abstract":"India’s federal system has witnessed a marked “defederalization” since 2014, where states have been reduced to administrative line agencies, completely overturning the federalizing momentum of the preceding two decades. This trajectory starkly contradicts the BJP’s 2014 manifesto pledge of “harmonious center-state relations,” and reveals an insincere commitment to the idea of federalism. Drawing on Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) resolutions from 1951 to 1972, the paper traces the BJP’s longstanding aversion to federalism. The emphasis on cultural nationalism, uniformity over diversity, and a strong center reflects ideological commitments that have been embedded in the party’s foundational discourse. The paper argues that the defederalization turn is happening amid a transformation of the party system and a simultaneous generational shift within the BJP. The new cadre of leaders, socialized to ideological rigidity due to the party’s pariah status and their insulation from ideational diversity, are the primary drivers of this defederalizing thrust. Their rise to leadership roles, which coincides with the emergence of the BJP as the dominant force has allowed the party to leave no stone unturned in enacting its hardline ideological and anti-federal agenda.","PeriodicalId":36326,"journal":{"name":"South Asia Multidisciplinary Academic Journal","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"http://journals.openedition.org/samaj/pdf/10291","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147911466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
