While architecture has ventured far outside its boundaries into more and more experimental technologies in the last decades, it has always remained connected to its own home position or comfort zone. The construction sector - and the affiliated field of architecture - has historically lagged years behind other industries in adopting digital technologies. The fields of robotics, computer science and material engineering have entered architectural research and many architects have embraced new developments with unprecedented openness. One means of tapping into the vast design space of robotic construction is by looking at multi-robotic processes. However, from an architectural perspective, the cooperative robotic process paradoxically increases both the possibilities and the limitations for design. The process design exercise is preceded by a thorough introduction to algorithmic thinking, coding, robotics basics and a custom robotic control tool.","PeriodicalId":361864,"journal":{"name":"Intelligent Control: Disruptive Technologies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116235772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter presents several research projects as case studies to discuss the issue and pose further questions on how architects should respond. With the commercialisation of various devices, Virtual Reality and AR are becoming increasingly popular topics in numerous industries, including design and architecture. The structure is a prototype for an adaptive design and fabrication system, resilient to wide tolerances in material behaviour and fabrication accuracy while being the largest structure to date built on the principles of AR-assisted fabrication. The design is inspired by a traditional Metis sash, which is made with the art of finger weaving, and draped across one's shoulder or tied around one's waist. The aim is to develop an adaptable workflow and toolset, applicable to various design-to-fabrication scenarios.","PeriodicalId":361864,"journal":{"name":"Intelligent Control: Disruptive Technologies","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133615709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
