Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm is population-based algorithm which has ability to fine tune the controller parameters. In this paper, chaotic inertia weight and constriction factor-based PSO algorithms are proposed for tuning of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller parameters to control brushless direct current (BLDC) motor drive. The BLDC is modelled in MATLAB/Simulink and trapezoidal back emf waveforms are modelled as a function of rotor position using MATLAB code. The simulation results of PSO algorithms are compared and results shown the effectiveness of C-inertia weight and C-factor in tuning PID controller parameters.","PeriodicalId":360947,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Process Systems Engineering","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114695683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, CHP is receiving increasing considerations for investment by national and international governments, as well as power grid companies to maximise the benefits from CHP. The variable demand of heat and power loads from the CHP plant and utility grid changing tariffs during the peak and off peak hours introduce more complexities to the control and the performance optimisation of CHP operation. In this paper, potential key performance indicators of CHP-based micro energy grid and the optimum utilisation of a specific grid with distributed energy sources are discussed. Optimisation algorithm is introduced to maximise the overall performance of CHP implementations.","PeriodicalId":360947,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Process Systems Engineering","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114878459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, they occupy a large space compared to other components and such bulky designs are not attractive in the modern industrial applications due to several constraints. Therefore, it is invaluable to develop compact heat exchangers but with the improved performance. In this work, an investigation was made on the possibility of reducing the size of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger by addition of swirl. Swirl was generated by using a twisted-tape which inserted inside tube and the effects of these tapes on the heat transfer rate and pressure drop were theoretically studied. The results showed that a half-length regular spaced twisted-tape insert gave the lowest Nusselt number while a full-length twisted-tape insert gave the maximum Nusselt number and hence the highest rate of heat transfer. The length of the heat exchanger could be reduced by 13.3% with a full-length twisted tape and this would be result in 6.8% of reduction of the fabrication cost. Therefore, addition of swirl into the fluid flow should help to design compact and low cost heat exchanges with improved performance but the pressure drop increased leading to an increase of the required pumping power. A prototype shell-and-tube heat exchanger was designed and fabricated based on the theoretical results. Studies are underway to experimentally investigate the overall effectiveness of the use of twisted-tape inserts for enhancing the heat transfer rate by considering all the related benefits and drawbacks.","PeriodicalId":360947,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Process Systems Engineering","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123958444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper discusses the prominence of optimum design of column internals to best achieve H 2 S selectivity using MDEA. To this end, a kinetics-based process simulation model has been developed for a commercial gas sweetening unit. Trends of sweet gas H 2 S and CO 2 contents as function of fraction active area (and hence residence time) have been explained through analysis of interdependent heat and mass transfer phenomena. Guidelines for column internals design in order to achieve desired degree of H 2 S selectivity are provided. Also, the effectiveness of various operating conditions in achieving H 2 S selectivity for an industrial absorber with fixed internals is investigated.","PeriodicalId":360947,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Process Systems Engineering","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116177005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The integration of a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a wind turbine doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) can make this intermittent in wind power more dispatchable. This paper focuses on the development of a control strategy for optimal use of the BESS for this purpose. Two objectives are targeted in the paper. The first objective is to obtain the maximum output power of the existing wind regime. The second objective is to supply the demand power commitment to the grid. This is achieved by controlling the battery power flow. The size of the battery is calculated to accommodate excess power and to compensate for the deficit power according to the wind regime and the grid power demand.","PeriodicalId":360947,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Process Systems Engineering","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114770685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed control strategy was suggested to design an intelligent load frequency control (LFC) scheme in multi-area interconnected power system. The PSO algorithm was employed to optimise the fuzzy-PID controller parameters including the scaling factors of fuzzy logic and the PID controller gains for minimisation of both system frequency deviation and tie-line power changes during load disturbances using the integral time multiply absolute error (ITAE) as objective function. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, the three-area 9-unit interconnected power system was used for the simulation. The superiority of the proposed approach was shown by comparing the obtained results to other strategies available in literature. Initially, the simulation was performed using the same controllers in each area, and then was extended with different controllers in each area. The comparative study demonstrates the potential of the proposed control strategy and shows its robustness to enhance frequency stability.","PeriodicalId":360947,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Process Systems Engineering","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124605673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
