We use popular online crowdsourcing platforms to recruit 63 subjects for a 90-day data collection that resulted in over 75K hours of data. The total cost of data collection was dramatically lower than for alternative methodologies, with total subject compensation under $3.5K US, and a total of less than 10 hours/week spent by researchers managing the study. At the same time, our methodology enhances control and enables richer study protocols by allowing direct contact with subjects. We were able to conduct surveys, exchange messages, and debug remotely with feedback from subjects. In addition to reporting on study details, we also discuss interesting findings and offer lessons learned.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132497182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our idea is to leverage the smartphones' sensors to sense children's gestures, cues, and reactions, and interact back through acoustics, vibration, and when possible, the smartphone display. This paper is an attempt to explore this vision, ponder on applications, and take the first steps towards addressing some of the challenges. Our limited measurements from actual kids indicate that each child is quite unique in his/her \"gesture vocabulary\", motivating the need for personalized models. To learn these models, we employ signal processing-based approaches that first identify the presence of a gesture in a phone's sensor stream, and then learn its patterns for reliable classification. Our approach does not require manual supervision (i.e., the child is not asked to make any specific gesture); the phone detects and learns through observation and feedback. Our prototype, while far from a complete system, exhibits promise -- we now believe that an unsupervised sensing approach can enable new kinds of child-toy interactions.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121923684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The notion of software radio on a small number of fixed stations has been investigated for decades, but moving its platform to billions of smartphones and even making it downloadable as an app has never been attempted. We firmly believe that such attempt could open new fronts for the software radio research. Beyond considering its possible impacts and ramifications, we demonstrate through measurements that today's smartphone hardware is already capable enough to support the real-time execution of down-loadable MAC/PHY software. It is certainly true for low-speed technologies such as ZigBee, and is close to providing real-time operation of higher-speed technologies like Wi-Fi. In our study, we also find that different application processor architectures lead to different bottlenecks in the MAC/PHY processing chain. This implies that the design of protocols that might be executed in software on general-purpose platforms should factor in the processor architecture like multiple cores and SIMD instruction sets, as it will facilitate the softwarization of wireless communication protocols in the future.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132268282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It uses coded light to encode the position of user's mobile device in an environment. By attaching a tiny light sensor on a user's mobile device, the user can attach digital information to arbitrary static physical objects or retrieve/modify the attached information as well. With this system, a family member may attach a digital maintenance schedule to a fish tank or indoor plants so that all family members may retrieve that for maintenance reference. In a store, a store manager may use such a system to attach price tag, discount information and multimedia content to any products and customers can get the attached information by moving their phone close to the focused product. Similarly, a museum can use this system to provide extra information of displayed items to visitors. Different from computer vision based systems, HiFi does not depend on object's texture and illumination, etc. Different from regular barcode approaches, HiFi does not require extra physical attachments that may change an object's native appearance. HiFi has much higher spatial resolution for distinguishing close objects or attached parts of the same object. As the HiFi system can track a mobile device at 80 positions per second, it also has much faster response than any above listed system.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114160076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Daily ECG monitoring will open up an unprecedented opportunity for pervasive healthcare applications. It will enable the daily detection and prevention of heart problems and also allow inferences about stress, emotion, and even sleep quality. Despite its huge potential, daily ECG monitoring still has not become reality due to its obtrusiveness. In this paper, we first study the potential opportunity to capture ECGs from daily use of smartphones, without requiring the user's explicit attention. Based on such an opportunity, we present a prototype ECG sensor that allows neat integration with a smartphone and the Sinabro system to provide ECG-related physiological status. We show the basic feasibility of our approach, based on daily smartphone usage through phone usage analysis and prototype-based experiments.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"30 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116716153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, new smart-phone \"app\" services, such as Over The Top (OTT) video delivery, are not under an operator's control. Furthermore, complex interactions between network protocol layers make it challenging for operators to understand how network-level parameters (e.g., inactivity timers, handover thresholds, middle boxes) will influence a specific app's QoE. This paper takes a first step to address these challenges by presenting a novel approach to estimate app QoE using passive network measurements. Our approach uses machine learning to obtain a function that relates passive measurements to an app's QoE. In contrast to previous approaches, our approach does not require any control over app services or domain knowledge about how an app's network traffic relates to QoE. We implemented our approach in Prometheus, a prototype system in a large U.S. cellular operator. We show with anonymous data that Prometheus can measure the QoE of real video-on-demand and VoIP apps with over 80% accuracy, which is close to or exceeds the accuracy of approaches suggested by domain experts.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133279742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, today's mobile platforms provide weak protection for login credentials such as passwords. To address this problem, we introduce the idea of an attested login and an embodiment of this idea called VeriUI. Attested login augments user credentials with a certificate describing the software and hardware that handled the credentials. Experiments with a VeriUI prototype found that it avoids the sluggish responsiveness of a thin-client approach, while a small app study indicates that VeriUI would require minor changes to existing apps.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133265192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our scheme is based on hand geometry. It improves on prior work by introducing a dynamic element, where movement challenges are issued based on static hand geometry data. Specifically, we demonstrate a set of multi-touch interactions that can capture hand geometry information of users. For each of the interactions, we extract different but complimentary hand geometric information from the user. Our approach has several advantages over traditional text password and other biometric authentications. First, unlike other recognition based authentication schemes, a user is only expected to interact with the multi-touch surface according to the challenges she is posed. In other words, she does not have to memorize any type of credential. In addition, the system provides security against replay attacks--which is a drawback associated with many authentication schemes, such as traditional biometric system based on recognition of face, iris or fingerprint. Last but not least, our approach works on current tablet computers without any needs for updates of hardware, firmware or drivers -- it can be carried out by an application. We demonstrate experimentally a configuration using 14 consecutive challenges on iPad2 tablet (taking approximately 3.32 minutes for novice users to respond to), wherein the user is authenticated with almost 97% accuracy.","PeriodicalId":360291,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121858987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
