Focussing on two financing contracts of Bai’ Bithaman Ajil (BBA) and Al-Ijarah Thumma Al-Bai’ (AITAB), the paper employs static panel data of Malaysian banks over 2008 to 2018. Controlling for bank and market-specific factors, the results indicated that AITAB exerted significant impact on the NPM. The paper further found that risk aversion, operating cost, liquidity and asset quality improves the NPM. In addition, the results show that the market structure influence the level of NPM. The Islamic banks may control these variables in setting for their preferred NPM level. Finally, the banks may need to carefully examine the types of financing contracts offered as they have different characteristics and may affect NPM.","PeriodicalId":35929,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Ekonomi Malaysia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88382201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We apply panel regressions on a sample of 13 Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries over 2002 – 2019. The empirical results show that institutional quality plays a vital role in determining the flow of foreign investments. Specifically, better regulatory quality tends to increase the inflow. The findings further show that countries with higher Gross Domestic Products (GDP) have greater capacity to attract larger investment flows. Additionally, a lower tax rate is expected to encourage the inflow of foreign investments. Finally, there is evidence that corruption encourages greater inflow of FDI.","PeriodicalId":35929,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Ekonomi Malaysia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77190938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to provide a systematic literature review (SLR) of studies done on the effect of COVID-19 on stock price. The PRISMA Statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guided this study through an SLR within the month of October 2020. Under the PRISMA, the study was scrutinized through three process: 1) defining clear research questions that permit a systematic research, 2) identifying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 3) examining large databases of scientific literature in a defined time. A total of 18 out of 56 papers were identified and analysed to give better understanding of the pandemic’s effect on industry companies and the methodologies adopted in past studies. This paper analyses the major theme, namely cyclical industries impacted by COVID-19. The industries experiencing such value destructions include tourism, airlines, restaurants and transportation. The findings of this review are expected to have implications on investors, academicians and the public at large, particularly with regards to how unprecedented events such as COVID-19 can inflict economic damage. © 2021 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The discussion of the study focused on the value of multipliers, factors of production and household income from tourism activities in urban and rural areas. The results had shown that tourist expenditure on the arts, entertainment and recreation subsectors produced the largest multiplier effect on output. Meanwhile, other sub-sectors such as shopping, food and beverage, accommodation and transportation did not show significant differences. In addition, there is a large income distribution gap in urban and rural areas although income distribution to factors of production and households has a positive effect. This inequality needs to be addressed to ensure that tourism development can benefit the overall economy. Among the steps that can be done is Community -Based Tourism (CBT) which involves collaboration between local communities and stakeholders to support authenticity, environmental sustainability, and strengthen management and supervision. It is expected to overcome the problems encountered as a result of the findings of the study. This is expected to increase the positive economic impact of tourism development.","PeriodicalId":35929,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Ekonomi Malaysia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82341298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Secondary data collected from world bank national data, central bank of Nigeria bulletin, Nigeria’s debt management office annual report, Ministry of finance for a period of 23 years,(1995-2017), and ordinary least square statistical tool was used to test the relationship between Nigeria’s external debt and its economic growth. The study found that there is a positive, but insignificant relationship between foreign debt stock (FDST) and Gross Domestic Product, a negative, and insignificant or weak relationship between foreign debt servicing (FDSR) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and a positive and significant relationship between Inflation Rate (INFR) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).The study concluded that the aggregate of Nigeria’s external debt does significantly affect its economic growth. Access to credit or financing, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, is vital for micro-entrepreneurs in climbing the socio-economic ladder that will contemporaneously increase their household income. In Malaysia, most of the MEs can hardly access financing from formal financial institutions due to poor credit rating, having zero to little collateral, income instability, small loan amounts, and high transaction costs. Alternatively, MEs approach Islamic microfinance institutions for their financing solution. Therefore, this study intends to investigate how far the utilization of Islamic microfinancing by MEs could enhance their quality of life. One hundred seven (107) usable questionnaires were analysed via the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) AMOS using IBM® SPSS and found that both investment and expansion factors played key roles in affecting the financial wellbeing of the micro-entrepreneurs. The results lend credence to the positive effect of Islamic microfinance products may have on MEs and indirectly support the long-term economic development for MEs. This study deliver implication to various angles. In practical part, it opens the eyes of micro-entrepreneurs to opt for the right path (expansion and investment) to achieve financial wellbeing. Government (regulators) can enhance the ability of Islamic microfinancing as a tool towards financial wellbeing and in theoretical part, this study deepens the scope of Schumpeter’s theory by inculcate this theory with Islamic finance scope of study. © 2021 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Households' responses and consumer confidence are measured through an online survey to collect the targeted groups' financial situation and household information and expectations during MCO. A total of 660 respondents from all over Malaysia were involved in this study. Analysis of the MCO responses showed that households were able to comply with MCO rules with the highest positive response of 99.7%. In comparison, the households' responses to the implementation of MCO showed the highest negative response of 18.4%, with the majority represented by the B40 income category (65.2%). The consumer confidence present index is operating at six times higher than the expectation index, which indicates that the implementation of MCO in the short-run has a moderate impact on households' economic status than in the long-run involving the COVID-19 pandemic effect on the overall economy. According to the people's confidence to the government in the long-run, current political developments are essential to influence the people's confidence in the economy. The consumer confidence index gives an overview of two policies that need to be emphasized by the government. Based on the short-run status of food consumption, this study strongly recommends that the policymakers consider establishing a National Food Stockpile in light of the nation's food security and moving on to food-based agriculture that considers the targeted groups in the long-run. © 2021 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
