The strict separation of measuring system and discharge system is essential to design a feeding device which works properly. The results of the dust feeding at Lafarge Plant Malogoszcz in Poland proves the Coriolis system as the right choice for the feeding of dust and meal. For the production of high quality products in the cement, lime, and gypsum industry, gravimetric measuring and feeding systems are essential. The feeding of meals and dusts is of special importance here. High accuracy, reliability, and last but not least environmental acceptability are the main requirements on these systems. Main fields of application include kiln feed and coal dust feed, the feeding of additives in cement mills or mixers, as well as the use of the Coriolis systems as measuring or feeding equipment in loading stations.","PeriodicalId":357005,"journal":{"name":"1999 IEEE/-IAS/PCA Cement Industry Technical Conference. Emphasis is placed on kiln and preheater/precalciner atmospheres, gas flow control parameters, final product characteristics and optimization of alkali reduction process. The subject of NO/sub x/ formation mechanisms is well documented in industry literature, and not detailed within. Consequently, as the amount of waste recycled has increased, so has the amount of volatile components, in particular, chlorine. Therefore, there has been a need for technology to remove chlorine effectively from kiln-preheater systems. The authors have developed a new chlorine bypass system to meet this need. Outlines and technical points of the chlorine bypass system such as its structures and tasks, effective chlorine removal at a low bypass ratio and the attainment of dust free operation by adding bypass dust to cement etc., are summarized. Furthermore, the computational fluid dynamics technology is used to evaluate the cooling performance of the probe, which is an important factor in design. The representative operation data such as volatile components balance, heavy metals balance and chemical components of bypass dust are summarized. Most vendors are now offering Windows-NT based systems with advanced graphics and new capabilities. However, advanced technology by itself does not guarantee usability and relevance. Too often systems are designed by engineers or programmers with little contact with real-life operational conditions at the plant. A strategy is proposed to ensure that the system meets the real needs of its intended users, whether they be operators, maintainers, analysts or managers. Elements of this strategy have been used successfully in recent cement plant projects. Important cases are illustrated and explained. The use of this technology is causing some concerns as environmental laws are becoming more restrictive. New technology that has been developed in Europe over a number of years and that has recently been introduced to the USA, can help lower dust emissions, and have other benefits (lower maintenance costs-lower labor costs-no product cross contamination-improved efficiency and throughput) for a fraction of the cost of replacing the cranes with storage silos. The Fuller Company was requested to study the operation of the plant's raw grinding and pyro-processing systems and evaluate if an increase in the nominal clinker production could be achieved. The impetus for the evaluation was Lone Star's desire to meet the future cement sales demand for the Mississippi Valley market, The evaluation team involved Fuller process and mechanical specialists who visited the site and surveyed the existing plant operations to determine the limitations of the process machinery, recommend operational changes and develop a report with their findings. Waiting until the time of failure usually results in hurried financial decisions for the business but, pre-planning will save many dollars and eliminate a lot of stress. A part of pre-planning is predictive maintenance. A program of periodic measurements of megger readings, polarization index values and vibration analysis can forewarn of an impending failure. This will permit the change or repair a given motor before it shuts the production down. The author describes how there are many factors that must enter into the decision to repair or replace an electric motor.
