This study investigates the relationship between residential context and educational inequality in rural China, drawing on data from the most recent, near-nationwide longitudinal survey. The study first shows that total inequality in child educational attainment in rural China is driven as much by inequality among villages as by inequality among households in the same village. Villages matter the most at the compulsory level of education: between living in two villages, population-average probabilities of discontinuing school at primary and lower secondary levels can differ by as much as 16 to 17 percentage points. Second, between the two structural dimensions of village contexts, access to off-farm employment opportunities, but not village resource constraints, is significantly associated with child educational attainment. Third, the study finds opposite associations of village out-migration opportunities with girls’ and boys’ educational attainment. These findings not only highlight the interplay between micro- and macro-level processes in shaping educational inequalities but also call attention to the social consequences of spatial inequality in economic development in rural China and beyond.","PeriodicalId":356968,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Comparative Education (Topic)","volume":"47 16","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113973066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We find that the house price within the pertinent school catchment area responds positively by 8.4%-9.1%. Moreover, we find no significant response in the unit market where residents are less likely to have school-aged children. Analysis with substituted control group with extended surrounding areas, other bilingual school catchment areas, and school catchment areas of public schools with similar academic performance confirms that the significant change in house price is resulted from the bilingual school designation.","PeriodicalId":356968,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Comparative Education (Topic)","volume":"14 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133135590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The higher the number of PTS is, the more intense the competition in getting prospective students is. The purposes of this study are: 1) to determine the position of each PTS among competitors’ positions; 2) to determine the variability of the fields of science that are favored by students; 3) to determine the characteristics of each PTS based on the fields of science. This research was conducted by analyzing secondary data from PDDIKTI (Higher Education Data Base) reports. The analysis technique was bi-plot analysis. The results show that PTS in the form of an academy is in a specific position of a group of certain fields of science, but PTS in the form of a university is in a quite various position of a group of fields of science. Based on the observations on eight fields of science, the analysis result shows that the most demanded fields are health science and computer science. The least interested field is social study, whereas the interest of students to the fields of Jurisprudence, Agriculture science, Economics, Engineering, and Education is relatively balanced. The characteristics of each PTS are shown by the closeness to the fields of science. The results could be used by the PTS for collecting information on market segment and as consideration for determining an effective marketing strategy in gaining prospective students.","PeriodicalId":356968,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Comparative Education (Topic)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134141811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
