This intends to assist the maintenance of the distribution networks and the substitution of failed insulators. Considering the technical and economic aspects, two technologies of relatively low cost and easy operation have been applied, detection of ultrasonic and radio interference noises. The results obtained during the field inspections are compared with several tests carried out at the High-Voltage Laboratory of Federal University of Itajuba. From the comparisons of these results the effectiveness of each technology applied to the field research is obtained.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124096363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A crucial step in the development of the control scheme is the derivation of phase shifter distribution factors (PSDFs), which indicate the influence of a PST on the active power flow on a certain line. Based on these PSDFs, the Linear Least Squares (LLS) method is used to calculate the optimal PST settings. The degree to which an even repartition can be obtained, depends on the number of PSTs in relation to the number of interconnectors. As a case- study, simulations are performed involving the Dutch and Belgian interconnectors.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127599783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A control algorithm that controls the set point of the automatic voltage control (AVC) relay at the substation is proposed and its operation in an example network is tested using PSCAD simulations. The study network is a real distribution network located in south-west Finland which will experience voltage rise problems if a planned wind park is constructed.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128067698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However traditional SE algorithms, adopted in transmission systems, appear hardly applicable in distribution networks because of the lack of available real time measurements with a consequent high level of uncertainty resulting in the estimations. To overcome this problem an original (non-iterative) process, allowing a preliminary assessment of the uncertainty in voltage estimation, has been developed. The method, based on a performance parameter, here defined as \"variance moment\", gives for a distribution system a quick and simplified evaluation of the network performance in making a SE. This process results also a good technique for optimizing the locations of voltage measurements showing a sensible reduction in the computational effort with respect to traditional methods.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121911789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transmission system operators typically do not possess a detailed knowledge about voltage profile across interconnected power systems. In this context, reactive power scheduling may be inefficient and inter-regional reactive power flows become a decisive issue. This inefficiency, associated with economic constraints and increasing stress on interconnection lines, may lead to conflicts, which could be partially avoided with a better scheduling strategy. In addition to inter-utility agreements, part of the solution could be to use appropriate external network modeling. Different modeling are thus presented in this paper and illustrated with an IEEE 118 bus system with 2 separately controlled regions, whose scheduling objective is to minimize active power losses. The regional scheduling process is described and the state of the interconnected power system is compared with a global optimization. Finally, the influence of the external network modeling parameters and the accuracy of their forecast is commented.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130243355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three versions of the stabilization scheme are described. The best of them employs three ANNs fed with transformer terminal currents that has proven to be superior over the two other ANN schemes. The final solution combines the classification strengths of neural networks with commonly used second harmonic restraint, thus being a hybrid classification unit. To determine the most suitable ANN topology for the inrush classifier a genetic algorithm was used. The developed optimized neural inrush detection units have been tested with EMTP-ATP generated signals, proving better performance than traditionally used stabilization algorithms.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130473711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper the use of decision matrices for condition determination of high-voltage equipment is discussed. This requires a \"rating\" realization of the general decision matrix with adapted key rating criteria describing the equipment under examination. After forming the rating matrix, it is shown how ageing and maintenance can be integrated into the proposed approach. With the integration of ageing and maintenance the rating matrix can yield forecasts for the expected condition of the equipment in the future. The proposed method is then used in order to determine the condition of a high-voltage circuit breaker. It must be emphasized that the term \"condition\" used henceforth does not merely reflect the technical condition of the equipment, but it also includes economical and other aspects. It should also be noticed that, in this paper, the degradation state (rather than the actual condition state) is calculated. This approach offers specific advantages, especially when the effects of ageing or maintenance are being taken into account. Combined with a failure mode, effect and criticality analysis (FMECA), the method can be used in order to calculate the risk associated with the specific piece of equipment.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131524915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stochastic load demands have a significant effect on the economic model of the DG units. The uncertainties are modeled as scenario trees. But as the number of decision making stages increase, the scenario tree becomes extremely large, which leads to complex computation. Therefore a novel approach to generate a scenario tree using classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach is presented. The resulting multistage nonlinear stochastic model is solved using adaptive PSO.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132621687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The issue of protection for a DFIG based wind turbine during network fault is also considered. It is seen that the large rotor currents can generally be ascribed to the small converter rating. Different protection arrangements for the converter are examined. The simulation results show that the stability margin of a FSIG can be significantly greater when there is extra reactive power compensation available from a DFIG in the vicinity.","PeriodicalId":356805,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126595057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
